    Hey Nick, I work for BMW so I know exactly what it's like dealing with people who believe they know better because they have money. Lets hope more of them try and get informed and prepared like you do.
    Some tips - I am amazed you use the 19" wheels for the snow tires, I would suggest you use the smallest wheels that fit and this way you'd have two sets of wheels which will make install much easyer. I'd even put snow tires which are much narrower than the recommended size - even if they are stretched a bit it would be much better for traction in the snow.
    The best snow tires are from the scandinavian manufacturers like nokian, gislaved, vredestein, nordman. Just don't cook them to much when it's dry, as they aren't really designed for that - that's why the BMW recommended ones aren't that good on snow, as they are still made to handle the autobahnn as the typical M driver would expect.
    Also there is a product which would be nice to have in your trunk - liquid snow chains - just a spray can with some chemical which increases tire traction in case you get stuck - been tried and works considerably.

    Blizzaks are spectacular. Had them on an AWD IS, and now a RWD CTS v-sport. The 4 days a year you get conditions shown in the video, Blizzaks are confident and competent. The rest of the winter, when it's a combo of light snow / slush / ice, and generally cold af, they perform superbly. Really an amazing cold weather tire. Heard Nokians are great as well. I grew up outside of Fairbanks Alaska. When I moved to Oregon after college, people assumed I had some magical power for driving in the snow. I've never hit anyone, went into the ditch once (someone was in my lane coming towards me so it was a good choice), and it is simple, like you pointed out. Slow down, plan your routes, avoid hills, take the back way to avoid the panicked crazies, and if you have to go in rush hour? Go out to eat, go shopping, anything, just wait for it to die down.
    Great video, your talking about 3x your typical planning, absolutely. Most of the time we had trucks, but the problem with trucks is the lack of weight in the back. We had locking hubs, so 4x4 was for when you wanted to get someone out, or if iyou wanted to go off the beaten path. We had 2 huge sheets of lead that dad and I would wrestle into the back of the truck, in cars we did the bags of sand like you said.
    Hills are the devil, most accidents from my experiences were those and hair pin turns a close second. Living in Oregon, it was freezing rain that was the enemy, or freezing fog, and the key again, was slowing down.

  • @monstersemmel
    @monstersemmel 8 лет назад

    Windows fog up very quickly when A/C is switched off - make sure to keep that ON when it's cold or wet outside. The A/C compressor dehumidifies the air in the cabin! Most of you probably know it, but it's a quick fix.

    Hey Nick, Im going to have to disagree with your assessment of the rear window defroster turning off after 'X' minutes. Owning both a BMW and an Audi, I can tell you that you want the heaters (rear window, windshield nozzles, seats, etc.) on a timer. Everything on the BMW still works, but on the Audi where nothing times out, all of those elements are burnt out. They are all easy to replace except for the seats. So timers are your friend in my opinion. BTW, anyone find it Ironic that we're taking snow driving lessons from a New Zealander??

    Another tip: Consider downshifting when coming to a stop. If you don't have paddles, put the gearstick in 3, 2 or LO gear when coming to a stop. Use the engine to brake rather than the brakes as much as you can. Also, if you give the car gas when it's stationary, you're gonna spin the wheels. If you give the car gas when you're rolling, you will roll forward.

    • @paradox5556
      @paradox5556 2 года назад

      why would it be beneficial to use engine braking instead of normal braking? Engine braking only slows down the rear tyres, which means a lot less braking power and potentially sticking your tail out under braking

      @@paradox5556 sorry I'm late to the party but engine breaking slows the wheels down gradually reducing the chance of your wheels slipping. Nice work Nick! My BMW only has an on/off for TC (2006 330i) so I much prefer the off position. I agree that a full set of winter tires is absolutely essential. The "all weather" variants are of no use. The preferred driving technique is like "hyper miling", where you make minimal use of the throttle and brakes, relying on momentum and maintaining lots of distance from the car you are following. You anticipate what is coming and avoid lane changes and any sudden movements. If you need help to make a sudden stop, you point the car into the heavier snow on the side to slow you down and use the grip of the winter tire to stay in control. Well practised Canadian driving habits help which include being polite and not aggressive.

Shut of the hot air and wait for a while and then the snow will start to blow away in stead of sticking to the windscreen.

    Hi Nick, thank yo for the video. On top of the demonstrated tricks, I believe it'd be useful to mention that driving in a manual mode, downshifting gears is a good way to stop a car quicker as well as a gear properly chosen up to a driving speed is also a safety moment. It is better to drive 1-2 gears down than usual to maintain a proper momentum so wheels would grip a road surface firmly.

    • @fionn1206

      but with a car like this the engine has so much torque in 1-2 gears lower, that the wheels wont find the grip because of the high engine torque. thats why some automatics start in 2nd gear in slippery conditions, so that the torque at the wheels isnt as high. and downshifting to stop the car just increases the engine break but the grip that the wheels have dont increase (so its very much useless)

    What I have also found to help get the car going is to start in second gear and then shift to third manually ASAP. Once in third gear, you can push the DCT controller back to automatic mode. This trick plus Efficient throttle response helps decrease the low end torque that causes wheel spin.

    Hey Nick... I enjoy all the videos!! I'm also an M4 owner. I'm in Colorado and it's my DD. I agree with many of the things you suggest... full snows, anticipating traffic, repeatedly pressing the rear defroster button! But a couple things I do a bit different:
    - I keep DST fully on, unless I need some rear tire slip to move on from a full stop, or to play around in an empty lot. Then MDM or DST off works well. I definitely keep DST fully on when on the highway or other roads.
    - I also have DCT. I drive in manual mode... paddles only in the snow (actually, all the time). It allows me to mimic a manual trans for engine braking.
    - I get the "keep up momentum on a hill coming to a stop sign", but I would never just look all ways and go through the stop sign without slowing nearly to a stop. It seems you just went through that stop sign at full speed, albeit only about 20 mph. But still... at least coming to a near stop is better.

    One week ago i have driven my M3 in the snow on summertires.
    You dont need wintertires like Nick states.
    Try to keep momentum when driving, and traction control fully off when taking off, or it always kicks in and you get nowhere.
    Wintertires are safer thats a fact, but also create a “false” feeling surtenly on high powered cars.
    If you know your vehicle and you know what you can do with it, then you drive safer even on summertires.

    • @importcamel03
      @importcamel03 5 лет назад

      Lmao what a terrible thing to suggest to people. Summer tires are soft as hell and go rock solid and lose all traction at 5°C (40-45°F). Even on cold enough summer days you spring and fall days you lose traction if you don't throttle correctly. Even all season tires are a horrible tire on a RWD car with this much power/torque. Why cheap out on tires on an M3 instead of protect your life and investment and other people from dying from your terrible choices?

    The only trouble I have is side parking where there are loads of ridges of ice and snow, because it is difficult to steer. Even if you turn the wheels the car can still go forward! Idrive an x1 sdrive and when passing deep snow, like 200mm, and fee the car starts to loose momentum, I do a long press on esc button disabling ESC and Traction control all together, rev it up to like 3000-3500 rpm, and I get the highest possible grip, way better than using traction control. Last winter, one morning I've found my car covered in like 30 cm of snow, and the side-roads were in deep snow like estimated at more than 20cm (soft snow, well above my ground clearance which is 18cm), and it was snowing like hell. I still managed to get to work without any stop, no snowchains, although people with awd cars didn't even bother to clean their cars and took shuttles. I'm not saying the Rwd is better than awd (there is no comparison) , but only than that morning was horrendous.

    Keep the suspension settings in the softest mode. In snowy or rainy weather. Some of the power gets absorbed by the dampers, hence better traction. Race cars or bikes for that matter will set the vehicles

    One thing I discovered after the first snowfall this winter was that any tire marketed as an Ultra High Performance All-season is really just a summer tire. Of course the first winter I am lucky enough to have Quattro in, I handicap myself with crap tires haha. If anyone else made the same mistake as me, be extremely careful as braking performance is severely diminished, and even if you have AWD like me, grip is extremely scarce.

  • @mowglilp

    Fully agree with these tips. Great vid Nick. One more thing I would add, is to use a higher gear when there is a risk of slipping.
    I manage to go over a steep climb where the surface was just ice. Using second gear, I barely made it, but in first no chance... even with momentum. Another advice would be to let go of the brakes, if you need control.
    For example, you may end up stuck climbing a hill and hitting your brakes wouldn't help, because you car will just slide back or even sideways, that's a big no-no. By releasing the brake pedal can you just enough control to keep the car straight and avoid sliding sideways or crashing into obstacles. And of course try using engine braking as much as possible, WITHOUT aggressively downshifting or downshifting more than one gear, since it can lock up the rear.

    I live in Sweden and have used many different snow tyres. I love my Sottozeros on my Cayman S. They hardly feel much different than my Michelin pss. With a lot of winter tyres, you really feel the tread pattersn moving around making the car feel like its running on flats.

    How wide tires do you have Nick? I think some issues with the M3/M4 in the winter season is because of too wide tires.My friends M3 has 255 in front and back, and since its not a huge truck that probably is to wide. A wider tire will spread the weight of the car more and you will have even less traction. Here in Norway, most of the main roads into Oslo and other "big" cities are salted so they are pretty much just wet all winter. But when youre driving on slushy snow on country roads or in the suburbs, around freezingpoint its fairly certain those wide tires are gonna be trouble.My Bmw, a 330i, has 225 in the front and 245 in the back, which is probably to wide as well. Should've changed it to 225 in the back as well, or a smaller tire.

    Ive driven the Blizzaks and they are exceptional tires in my opinion. I have them on a G-Wagon and Countryman (AWD and FWD) and they are excellent - once your about 10 Celsius or above you loose quite some grip.
