When i mentioned about replacing the slide valve to a ball valve in one of my recent messages and trying to work out how it's possible to do so Google 4" drainage bungs..but it still means you're going to get wet.. but its only like going in a swimming pool but with fish around you instead of annoying people when on holiday abroad lol

Hi Andy and viewers. I’ve recently purchased a house with a Koi pond. I’ve never kept any animals before but I’m really getting into all this ‘water science’ 😂. I have the same filter system as you, but the previous owner connected the first (after the swirl pot) and last bays together with piping and a ball valve set at the 1/2 turn. This means if water is poured into the first or last bays, it somewhat balances between them, although the pipe has a very slight incline to the last bay, so less water makes its way there. My bays are: swirl pot > large brushes > finer brushes > Japanese matting > foam. This means some water after the first mechanical bay makes its way to the final foam bay after a slight incline up the pipe.
I’m trying to understand why this would be done and wonder if you have any ideas? The ball valve is extremely tight I can’t turn it) so I’m assuming it was configured this way purposely, being left like it for quite some time and not just left open by accident (I could be wrong though of course). I can’t seem to find the answer with Google, although it is a little specific and niche 😂. (Apologies for the war and peace)

Hiya, and Welcome to Pond Keeping. The multi bays are great if you don't want any mechanical parts or to waste too much water when cleaning them. Lots of pond keepers will swear by different systems they've used for years and work for them. The filter system as your Multibay does 2 jobs, clears solids from your pond to remove through cleaning the materials in the bays, and promotes Beneficial bacteria for the nitrification cycle, Nitrification is the process that converts ammonia (another fish waste) to nitrite and then to nitrate and is another important step in the global nitrogen cycle to keeping your water safe for your fish. Always remember, your a 'water keeper'. Keep your water good and the fish should be able to look after themselves to a degree. Clear water doesn't mean its good water.. Cleaning waste from the filter, and testing water parameters are both priority tasks that you need to get in the habit of doing.
Your system sounds like its set up as you buy them when they come new. I have made a number of changes to mine to increase the beneficial bacteria and still remove solids and the finer waste a pond produces. There is so much to tell you about pond keeping, but maybe my other videos in this channel will help you along with your journey.. I'll post some links to some videos I've produced to start you off. And don't forget, Everyday is a school day..😉👍.

Hi Andy, good to see you back, been a while and miss your vlogs.
I like you have the multibay with vortex but back in December i ordered myself an RDF from China, who showed me some of thier customers over here in the UK who simply re-badge thier RDF's as thier own, this will arive on Monday so looking to change over and *Hopefully* do away with the constant summer cleaning of the Multi-Bays.
On a side note i bought myself a beautiful Goshiki from Danny koi and aquatics last week end, along with a Chag' to fit nicely in with my other fishy friends, ive also got a Tancho and a Kogane Ochiba to pick up in March/April, so looking forwards to this spring and onwards for some good growth from these bad boys, i think i might order some of that high protien food that you showed to help.
    Keep up the good work.

One tip if you can replace that slide valve from your bottom drain to your filter to a ball valve which is virtually impossible in a way because those slide valves do fail after time of usage

@@KoiPondLifestyle I've been thinking and that doesn't really happen very often with me..but on a serious note I think the only way you could swap the slide valve to a ball valve is to remove the cover off the bottom drain within the pond and block it up with something 🤔.. maybe the is something you can buy that can do that maybe from a koi pond dealership not sure but it will mean you getting wet either way so i would wait until the summer if I was you that's if we get one 🙄👍
