Half of the creatures in the deck are unblockable rogues, and yet there are very few prowl cards. Includes: Auntie Snitch (a recurring 3/1) Latchkey Fairy (a 3/1 Flying that draws a card) Notorious Throng (to deal lethal in a(n extra) turn nobody expects it from) Earwig Squad (for those occasions when you just need to get rid of the Angel of Glory's Rise, Moltensteel Dragon and Hermit Druid) and my favorite: Knowledge exploitation. (It cast my opponents rise of the dark realms on turn three once. I got a veteran explorer and five more creatures out of it. ) I play in large Multiplayer groups, so running countermagic is something i won't do. Rise of the dark realms and an archaeomancer are in my deck. As well as a phyrexian altar and a bitter ordeal. It was originally based around oona. the exquisite quandary combo wasn't, though.
Excellent information! I've been wanting to try out new build paths with my Lazav deck and this is a great way to switch it up without needing to plunder too many new cards. Thank you Professor!
This is eerie. I've been mulling over how to brew a B/U Ninjutsu deck with Sygg as the commander for the past week and out of the blue you drop this gem in my lap. Much appreciated, Professor!
Have a wonderful holiday Professor!! I'll be doing a couple drafts, playing some casual constructed, and using my cube for the first time this weekend, ALL thanks TCC! Thanks so much professor!
I like these occasional commander lectures, some of these have given me ideas for tweaking my Wydwen/oona faerie deck. it has been one of my trouble decks to design mainly because of dimir being my least favoured colour combos. Ironically t however has been one of my more vorthos decks
He may seem like a questionable addition but Ob Nixilis, the Fallen is an all-star in this deck, especially with all the evasion and protection he can gain from the equipment Sygg decks typically run. He guarantees a Sygg draw trigger off of land drops and can become a massive beater without too much effort. I really enjoy Corrupted Conscience in Sygg decks too, it makes for a deadly win-con if you can protect it.
My first commander was Vela the Night Clad, and Sygg was in the 99 for that deck. I think that she is a much better U/B Agro commander due to her ability just passively giving your creatures evasion, and plenty of blue creatures letting you draw or loot on combat damage anyways. Her second ability is also incredibly powerful alongside ninjas, blink effects and even makes mulldrifter even better than it already is. She also has more combo potential with flicker effects, and even just a two card combo with rite of replication that ends the game is many situations if it resolves (blade of selves is also scary in large games, even though I don't run it). Other weapon choices outside of the swords include bonehoard, scytheclaw, sword of vengeance (instead of fancy effects just take the budget sword that gives tons of combat abilities!), and I also run Jitte since I got it from FTV: Lore. My list runs a lot of similar cards but gets more value with Vela synergy. Also the myriad creatures in blue and black are great card advantage and LTB triggers in her, as is mirror match. Tamiyo and Sorin are also perfect planeswalkers for either deck.
Lol you uploaded as I'm designing a sygg EDH deck xD omg that timing lol My sygg is an artifact affinity/ robots deck I didn't feel like adding white and sygg offers me draw power so I chose him to command
I'd love to see a deck tech on Arjun, the shifting flame. he's so cool and I think he had plenty of potential to be fun and flavorful, or powerful in the right strategy. I'd love to see your take on what a mindmoil commander deck could do :)
+Tolarian Community College Yeah this seems pretty sweet. I just built an an Edric 2dh deck and it is quite fun. The aggro weenie decks in commander seem like a cool archetype.
no mention of of mindcrank! very good combo with bloodchief.(3 mana for the 2 combo pieces sign me up, and this deck could get it online scary fast) I only bring this up because you're already running the blood/bond combo.
Damn. Ive been wanting a more unique commander deck, and was really excited when I found Vela. After brewing for a couple of weeks, it looks like we came to basicly the same list... Saves me some money at least.
This deck is quite similar to my monoblue thieving magpie edh deck, headed by the horsemanship lord. People never expect monoblue aggro! And all the carddraw helps against the wraths.
I have watched this video over ten times since stumbling upon it a few days ago, I can’t stop laughing! 😂 It’s also very informative and even though I have a Yuriko, I really want to get the missing pieces to play this!
so i ran into this Sygg build nad the secret tech was guess What? Drana liberator of malakir she gets theough past all my non flying creatures, she makes both herself and syyg huge and takes over the game quickly. Sygg players, Drana is amazing!
Hi professor! I really enjoy watching your videos, and after this one, I was thinking to build a deck alike this one but with some different cards in that complement my own taste (ex: Ghastlord of Fugue, Nightveil Specter, Sword of Fire and Ice, Sword of Feast and Famine and also Bitterblossom), but I don't really know what do change, could you give me your opinion? Thanks for your time, and have a great day ^_^
I always love your EDH deck tech! each one always has interesting ideas that open my horizons to other colors. I'm a huge green player, and temur colors have always been my favorite, a Surrak Dragonclaw deck is by far my best one, but I'm curious professor how would you build one?
+Tolarian Community College this may not be the right video to put this on, but I'm not sure there really is, aside from maybe the drafting videos, but those are kind of old and I would assume not have the comments looked at much. so this is the question: if you were to buy an alpha booster box, what would you do with it? draft? sealed? sell it off? frame everything? I'd really like to know, because this just might come up somewhere in the near future.
Liking these videos as I'm getting ready to come back to MTG. Just curious, I'm tossing around the idea of building a Black/Red Commander deck around the Nightmares from Torment (Petravark, Petradon, Hypnox, Laquatus's Champion, what have you, but I wouldn't want to run Chainer in that deck). Problem is I can't find a commander in those colors that would synergize well (and preferably not be an overwhelming target). For the rest of the deck, I'd probably run a lot of control since I remember my old deck in its previous format (which would have been Standard back in Odyssey block) having mana problems just from such a high mana curve (mostly ran LD, but this deck would run land destruction, discard, and the like). Any suggestions on such a deck and/or a potential commander?
I run a Thada Adel piracy deck with a heavy merfolk theme. Somewhat different card choices, but plays pretty similarly. I did make a few more flavor based choices though.
First of all professor, that was a hilarious video. I always like new commander and legacy deck techs. However, this deck has so much card draw that I don't know why it doesn't run Laboratory Maniac. Why is that? And merry Christmas, by the way.
This deck is a lot of fun! I added in some different cards like vensers journal and alhammarets archive for some extra life gain and card draw, and goodness I was drawing almost 20 cards per turn and gaining almost 40 life per turn! ....until I got board wiped haha
I wouldn't be surprised if someday there is a pirate themed block I mean Davy Jones is by all accounts a form of Grimm reaper or dark spirit also muskets tie into a magic in a way so do cannons
making room for noxious Gearhulk would be benificial and offer removal, and menace to land more damage. and a Conjourors Closet would be a decent charge option fpr drawing those win cons....
0:44 hello there microphone Seriously tho, sounds like you had a lot of fun writing this script. +SnowCoveredPlainswalker The problem I see with this is that infiltrator doesn' offer enough group synergy for matchups where blocking is irrelevant and can't block or outrace your opponent in matchups where blocking is relevant. It leaves you in an awkward space because against ramp or combo lists, you generally want to present a lot of power very fast, where a 2 power creature without any card advantage, tempo or synergy just won't cut it. What have been your experiences with Duskmantle Seer when playing this deck? When you spoke about him in the beginning, I expected to see a curve that heavily favored 2-3 cost cards. But as you went on explaining the deck, I noticed quite a few 4-7 costed cards. Even with your counter spell suite, you went with two high converted cost cards. Raven Guild Master would go well in this deck. Make it unblockable and then attack, opponent mills 10 cards. More if you use it with Sword of Body and Mind.
proffessor, can you do a red and white commander deck? Hello Professor! First up, I love your content, you're my favorite MTG youtuber out there. I had a question for you: do you think it's worth getting into MTGO solely for Pauper and the occasional Cube/Flashback drafts?
+Bartosz Strzelecki If you cannot play that elsewhere and you both want to and will play it on MTGO, then yes. One of the things MTGO does have going for it is the lack of any monthly fee. It's $10, once, and then you've got it. Beyond that, buying a Pauper deck is cheep, etc.
+Tolarian Community College Yeah, that's the issue, my LGS just doesn't have enough people interested in paper Pauper (there is Standard Pauper, but it's not nearly the same). And the wacky draft formats on MTGO are really interesting. Just one thing I worry about is that it doesn't actually all look that cheap? Most pauper decks I've seen are ~60 tix, which boils down to like $40. Or I'm looking at it the wrong way?
*Prof complains about Swords' prices* *Sword of Body and Mind, Feast and Famine, and War and Peace are less than $15* *Runs Damnation* *Damnation is over $50*
Hey prof, I really like your sygg deck. Are you still playing it? And if yes, how it changed over the time? I think there are a lot of new cards there would perfectly fitting in.
Do you own and run all the decks you've teched? I've been getting into commander and find an increasing number of commanders and builds appealing and I'm not sure how many commander decks is too many.
Hey professor, I'm looking into getting into EDH since standard has been boring me. This deck looks really cool, but what's the price range of it? I'm looking for a solid EDH deck around the $150 or less range, is this it?
This is better than the Weatherlight, a group of thieves, killers and general low lives from all across the multiverse banding together under the command of a Merfolk mage to plunder every sea they can find.
this video is just *kraken* me up.
*argh*.
R that Kraken booty can not lie, till the pirates capture and give it a kraken ride. R hahaha.
Duel Decks: Pirates vs Ninja needs to happen :3
...But I'd settle for Ninja vs Samurai if we're returning to Kamigawa anytime soon xD
+Guftders Kalisere all i want in life
We never will. Ya f*cked up, WoTC, and we don't get return to Kamigawa because you made Saviors.
You know WotC did that, right. Google it. It was an April Fools prank but the decklist is there anyway
I mean... Pirates vs Dinosaurs is just as nice :D
Good news, we've returned to Kamigawa lmao

Be respectful, I work at the Sylvan Library Learning Center, it's a lovely place.
I can be a comedy snob at times, but I had many hearty laughs during this video, and I want to build Sygg now, lol. A++ professor!
Pirate prof is my new favorite
And to think I was only one playing sygg. Thanks for blowing up my spot Tolarian CC
6:00 always kills me
Have a wonderful holiday Professor!! I'll be doing a couple drafts, playing some casual constructed, and using my cube for the first time this weekend, ALL thanks TCC! Thanks so much professor!
I can tell that you really like Mtg, you also have lot of fun making these videos. Keep up the good work.

I'm running a similar approach in a Pauper build with Inkfathom Witch. It's fun. Great video.
Holy shit professor, you're great. Happy holidays!
Lol you uploaded as I'm designing a sygg EDH deck xD omg that timing lol
My sygg is an artifact affinity/ robots deck I didn't feel like adding white and sygg offers me draw power so I chose him to command
Highly entertaining, and very cool deck. Thanks Prof!
Considering Ixalan coming out... a real pirate EDH might be fun. Love what you did with the ninjitsu stuff here.
If I hadn't already plumped for an "Omnath, Locus of Explosions" deck I definitely would have built this! Time to start saving again!
Love this. Merry Christmas to you and your family Professor.
I was looking for a great 2 mana blue creature and totally forgot about Sygg. His ability pretty much pays for itself. Very nice.
I love watching your videos Professor, keep up the great work! :)
I'd love to see a deck tech on Arjun, the shifting flame. he's so cool and I think he had plenty of potential to be fun and flavorful, or powerful in the right strategy. I'd love to see your take on what a mindmoil commander deck could do :)
This seems like an edric spymaster of trest deck with the green replaced with black. Seems fun.
It is what I play and it is super fun. Lots of room for personal customization as well, which is something I love in decks like this.
+Tolarian Community College Yeah this seems pretty sweet. I just built an an Edric 2dh deck and it is quite fun. The aggro weenie decks in commander seem like a cool archetype.
also not a huge target like edric is

I have a deck similar to this. Ghastlord of Fugue is a perfect inclusion. Also you could use infect enchantments as an alternate win.

In case you all are wondering, the professor's boss (and the one he argues with) is his younger self.
Lmao you predicted Ixalan pirates and merfolk
yo yo yo, happy holidays from Belgium professor, another great EDH deck, keep it up in 2016
I have watched this video over ten times since stumbling upon it a few days ago, I can’t stop laughing! 😂
It’s also very informative and even though I have a Yuriko, I really want to get the missing pieces to play this!
So glad you enjoyed it!
The way that eyepatch doesn't even cover the eye is genius.
Chasm skulker is basically hangarback walker, only with squids. By the way, standard thopters is a thing now, and it's awesome!
A nice choice for a counter is Desertion, since it has a similar mechanic to Spelljack, though a bit more limiting.
so i ran into this Sygg build nad the secret tech was guess What? Drana liberator of malakir she gets theough past all my non flying creatures, she makes both herself and syyg huge and takes over the game quickly.
Sygg players, Drana is amazing!
6:00
I can confidently say that is the funniest thing on RUclips.
Awesome deck tech professor!
Can't believe you missed running Desertion as part of the counterspell suite... and it even fits the flavor!
Hey where did you find the artwork for lady death? Also, mindleech mass is good
Duskmantle seer only activates on your upkeep so it won't do damage on other people's turns
This was the most entertaining deck tech i ever saw. :D
Loving the sir mix-a-lot reference
Pirate Professor must be a thing, and a alter ego in this channel. DONT KILL HIM
Hi professor!

I love the roleplaying gag. Classic and funny
As much as I like these videos, I want to see The Professor play.
6:01 cracks me up every time.

Excelent! Another EDH video!! :D
I wonder how different this deck would look today with there being so many pirates
With a constant flow of drawing, Venser's Journal is another good card to toss into the mix. Sure it's expensive, but you'll have life gain :D
came here after our Christmas unwrapping, my brother got me a nemesis starter deck and I got him a inferno playmat
I wouldn't be surprised if someday there is a pirate themed block I mean Davy Jones is by all accounts a form of Grimm reaper or dark spirit also muskets tie into a magic in a way so do cannons
YaY I bought Sygg Cutt for a friend of mine I can't wait to play my guide vs his cutt
Best rouge tribal maybe.
Fun deck! Great ideas! More please!
Hey Professor, would you mind doing a duel commander deck tech?
making room for noxious Gearhulk would be benificial and offer removal, and menace to land more damage. and a Conjourors Closet would be a decent charge option fpr drawing those win cons....
@tolariancommunitycollege. Prof, it is about time for an update to this decklist....
0:44 hello there microphone
Seriously tho, sounds like you had a lot of fun writing this script. Only issue I have with this deck is that, yes while 2 color is more consistent, green has some VERY powerful cards that this deck *cough*ERIC*cough*. Who would you recommend as a BUG commander to helm that version should I want to go down that road?
A Pirate Ninja deck XD
+TheRedGauntlet I ran it as a rogue tribal with ninjas added in. XD
Pirate ninjas. Great its onepiece the deck.
Looks like a fun, less degenerate version of Edric, this also probably won't aggro the table the second they see your commander, I like it. I actually wanna try Inkfathom Infiltrator in my modern Merfolk deck, it's nice not having to give it Islandwalk.
Similarly, against aggro lists, you will often end up having to race. This time not against time, but against your own dwindling life total.
This leaves grindy midrange matches, where the ability to chump block a goyf with your topdeck might be the difference between defeat and victory.
Ultimately, it's too slow to fight combo and aggro and it lacks the ability to block against midrange. I really like the card, but it's just not a good fit for modern.
It sounds really good in the opening hand but you really don't want to draw it later on because it lacks the kind of immediate impact that you want with a tempo deck like merfolk.
Where is Psychosis Crawler? P/T based on hand size can make for a large threat, especially when made unblockable AND it can deal damage based on card draw, which not only will be done aplenty here but will give another engine to do the 3 damage.
Not that you'll have him out every game. But when you do, I'm not sure how confident I would be in winning the damage race against my opponents with that card. This deck doesn't seem to actually have a lower mana curve than other typical commander decks.

Enjoy your considerably higher win-rate and absurd card draw".
- Sygg, River Cutthroat.
Hey professor, will there be an atogatog tribal edh deck made? Would love to see those happy little grinning fellows again.
Raven Guild Master would go well in this deck. Make it unblockable and then attack, opponent mills 10 cards. More if you use it with Sword of Body and Mind.
I think Ghastlord of Fugue and Helm of the Ghastlord would be excellent additions to this deck.
proffessor, can you do a red and white commander deck? I cant seem to get my Argus Kos deck right and I would love your advice and from what I hear, its a common problem here in Indiana. not many people can make a good red and white deck and I think this would be a great benefit.
Examples of Red and White commanders would be:
Argus Kos, Woejek Veteran
Razia, Boros Archangel
Jor Kadeen, the Prevailer
Tajic, Blade of the Legion
Gisela, Blade of Goldnight
or Iroas, God of Victory
What you think of the Counterbalance / Top combo in this deck professor?
Here's the decklist imported to Tappedout.net for ease of viewing: tappedout.net/mtg-decks/sygg-jutsu/
+TheMrEM4N nice work. though the list only has 90 cards, while I counted the professor's at 99
JoselitoCPascual Sorry about that. I ended up tweaking it later for my own use and forgot to change it back. It's all fixed now.
hey Tolarian, the mask gives the equipped creature fear not intimidate :)
fear is the og intimidate

*Runs Damnation*
*Damnation is over $50*
Not Anymore Arty Boy
DOUBLE Not Anymore, Arty Boy
I am curious as to why you did not include ghastlord of fugue.
Would love to see you build a Nissa Vastwood Seer deck.
Hey prof, I really like your sygg deck. Are you still playing it? And if yes, how it changed over the time? I think there are a lot of new cards there would perfectly fitting in.

I'd like to see more HIGH Seas Adventures!
Hey professor, I'm looking into getting into EDH since standard has been boring me. This deck looks really cool, but what's the price range of it? I'm looking for a solid EDH deck around the $150 or less range, is this it?
Helpful video, pretty funny, I loved it!
YYYAAAYYYY EDH deck techs!!!!
This is hilarious!!! Sweet deck.
Now we CAN build actual Ninja-Pirate deck with eternalized Beebles... oh my.
What about adding an Ob Nxilis reignited to this deck? If you can get the ult off, you can completely decimate whatever player you choose
old ob nix is good too. Perfect 3 damage per landfall
This is better than the Weatherlight, a group of thieves, killers and general low lives from all across the multiverse banding together under the command of a Merfolk mage to plunder every sea they can find.
how much will this deck cost
Quite the crew professor
