    1st 3d accelerator ever: Diamond Monster 3D (so amazing)
    Recently switched from my trusted Diamond Stealth III S540 (S3 Savage4 Pro+) and Orchid Righteous 3D combo, to an Elsa Victory II (Voodoo Banshee). The performance of the Banshee is really awesome, I like this card. Has 16 MB of memory also.

    3DFX is the reason why I turned into retro PC gaming almost 10 years ago. I never had a 3D capable graphics card when I was a kid but now I have 4 3dfx cards (plus one non-working V1). A Diamond Monster 3D in a Pentium MMX 200 system running Windows 95, a Gainward Dragon 3000 and a Creative 3D Blaster II in SLI in a slot1 440LX system with a Celeron 533MHz, running Windows 98se and I also had a Pentium III 800MHz system with a Voodoo 3 2000 PCI but the motherboard died on me. That system was running Windows ME and was the first retro PC I owned. I definitely need to build a new home for that V3!

    Hey nicely done Victor :) my first 3dfx card was a Diamond Multimedia MOnster 3D PCI-4MB which I had alongside my Diamond Multimedia Stealth 2000 Pro 2MB (without the vram expansion lol)
    System was an Intel Pentium 120Mhz with 16MB Edo Ram, I later changed that to 48MB 2x 16+ x2x 8MB and after that to 4x 32MB EDo, when I went to the Pentium 200 MMX I went for 1x 128MB PC-66 SDRAM yea these were very exciting times first game I played with 3Dfx was Unreal I think and Descent 2 with the 3Dfx patch this was in 1996.

    I remember purchasing a Geforce 2 GTS 32MB over the Voodoo 5 because it had S-video in and higher performance, but I wanted that Voodoo 5 so damn bad. I knew it was going to be a collector's card. No one cares about my Asus Geforce2 GTS Deluxe, but people love those Voodoo 5's. My dad told me he still has all of my Slot A Athlons (750, 850 I think, 900 mhz and a 1Ghz) and it would be cool to build a good Retro PC with a voodoo card. He says he has my Geforce 2 GTS and I found my Radeon All in One 6800 or something like that.

    My first 3D card ever was - with a Pentium 133 - the Miro Crystal VRX back then, The Rendition Verité Chip with just 4MB was quite impressive. But then, like half a year later i got my first Diamond Monster 3D and was overwhelmed once more! i upgraded my CPU to a 200Mhz MMX later on and it was quite a nice gaming machine. Actually planning to setup a machine with both, cards in where the Rendition takes the job as 2D card and its possible to compare both on the fly just by selecting the renderer in certain applications.

    The first game I bought that required 3d acceleration was Starfleet Command(around 97 or 98). I think I bought an ATI Rage 128 but either way, the fluidity of it was just amazing. I remember thinking wow, how did I not know these cards existed? I had been so used to running whatever generic trident card I had in my PCs and getting acceleration blew my mind. 🙂

    My first hardware 3D experience: Need For Speed III on the infamous ATI Rage Fury Maxx - and actually the Maxx, for all its faults, did extremely well with NFS 3 and 4! And yes, it was like magic! I knew going into it that hardware acceleration would make it FASTER but I didn't understand until I saw it that it would also LOOK DIFFERENT, with effects that just weren't present in the software-rendered versions of my games. It was all very cool!!

    I ran a 5500 PCI for a while (replacing it with a Geforce 3 Ti200), and i remember getting it and my friends and I seeing that it needed an additional power supply connector. Blew our minds that this card must be a real beast if it needed that. Pretty sure that I ran it with a P3 733MHz CPU, no idea what RAM I was running at the time though, more than likely upgraded from the 128 MB that system originally came with.

    I’ve got a Voodoo 4 4500 AGP running inside of an Asus P5A-b, with an AMD K6-III 400MHz. I’m looking for a CPU that’s a bit faster, but this looks to be near the sweet spot of what the Voodoo 3 should’ve been.
    As for the Voodoo Rush, that was my first 3D graphics card in my Pentium 166 (non-MMX). I was totally astonished by the Tomb Raider graphics, which flew of my screen back then! I had (still have) the Helios 3D Voodoo Rush with 6MB.
    Great video, Victor!

    • @CosmoRiderDE
      @CosmoRiderDE Год назад

      I use an Banshee AGP on the same board with a K6-III+ at 600Mhz and score like 3.985 in 3DMark99max. With a single Voodoo 2 or in SLI i score less. Also with a V3. And a V4 is totally overkill there - even with 600mhz.

    • @victorbart
      @victorbart  Год назад +1

      Or just keep it in and just enjoy the older games 😀

    • @Inject0r
      @Inject0r Год назад

      @@CosmoRiderDE 32-bits color depth is a feature that was available at the competition around the time of the V3. The V3 lacked this feature though.
      Of course it’s overkill. The CPU is heavily bottlenecking the GPU. Though I can’t think of a better place for this mid range voodoo card. Anything faster needs a V5 in my opinion, because that’ll unleash the real voodoo potential.
      I’ll be buying myself a set of those AMD K6-2+ 570MHz CPU’s off of eBay in the near future. It’ll unlock some more potential for this platform. It’ll make that build fly in quite a few games. Exactly the performance I need it to have. :)

    Holy smokes reading the comments on this video is a who's who of retro machines youtubers!
    My earliest memories of 3d acceleration are with a Voodoo 3 2000 pci my brother installed in his Pentium 200. The machine was only a couple of years old so no way could he afford to replace the whole machine but he could put a low end Voodoo card inside! One of the Test Drive games was one of the first I games I remember finding the 3dfx specific settings and my eyeballs about popped out of my head the first time I saw it! Of course I also played Quake I and Quake II. Quake II stressed the system however and kinda sucked to play. Crazy how a nearly top of the line system was pretty much obsolete for gaming within two years...
    The same story with the Voodoo 5. As someone who bought a used one for like $50 in 2002 I can attest for how new games already simply didn't support that 5500 less then three years after release! You could buy any 3dfx card dirt cheap at the time because they were straight up useless by 2004.

    By the way there is a 1.5v version of the 5500 that won't work in SLI in newer boards so still 3.3v for SLI, anyway the 4500 is a popular option for moders for extra vram and once in a blue moon DVI. Fun fact someone did a custom Voodoo 1 a few years ago that does SLI and it sold for a nice chunk of change on eBay.

    I had the Voodoo 1 as well (in a Pentium 120 MHz) and one day 3D did not work anymore. I went back to the shop, they send the Voodoo 1 back and after a couple of weeks I got a new card back. But this was a Voodoo 2 with 12 MB. For "free".
    Put the card into the computer and still: 3D mode did not work.
    I then found out that my sound card had a defect which let to the Direct 3D driver to fail. I switched the sound card for a cheap card and everything worked.
    I have the Voodoo 2 still today.

    I needed this video thanks. I have a monster voodoo1 with Pentium 166 MMX, a Monster voodoo2 8MB with a Pentium 3 800 mhz, 2 Creative 3D Blasters in SLI with a Pentium 3 650, a Voodoo3 2000 with a Pentium 3 533. I'm getting a Banshee from Germany which I will use in a build with another Pentium 3 800. I know I could distribute the hardware better but I built this collection slowly with old hardware I had and cards I salvaged or bought over time. I made some videos on my Italian channel just to give you an idea. Now thanks to your video I have clearer ideas on how to redistribute my beloved 3dfx in an optimal way. Signed up👍

    A hack if you find a cheap 3500 w/o the medusa cable: the pinout (but not the form factor) is identical to an EVC (aka VESA P&D) connector. You can still buy the adaptors fairly cheaply. Buy one cut off the metal shielding (so the pins are exposed) plug it in, secure it well with the screws and forget about it. There's supposed to be dell OEM versions out there that don't require modding, so that might be an option. Or just wait for the cable to pop up, it can be as cheap as 30 bucks. I was planning to mate mine to a voodoo 1 so a compact VGA out solution was more ideal for me

    Sempron 2800+ paired with an Inno3D FX 5700 (correct memory and core clocks) and SLI 12MB Voodoo 2 (Diamond Monster 3DII and STB Black Bagic, fastvoodoo drivers with the overclock disabled) as well as an ESS Solo-1E gives an extremely good DOS and Windows 98 gaming machine. Fantastic compatibility and the games which have texture issues on the FX are capable of running well on the Voodoo2. No point on spending more on a more powerful AGP card as the CPU is the limiting factor first when playing XP era games.
