The story "Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?" is definitely one of the best and most emotional comic book stories ever written. Alan Moore paid a magnificent final tribute to the dying Silver Age's continuity by deconstructing the silly tropes of that era in the same style he would use years later while writing Watchmen, showing us an emotionally broken and utterly powerless Superman uncapable of stopping the sudden tragedies that are affecting him and his loved ones, and the villains acting in a much darker way than their Comic Code Authority politically correct versions. Apart from that, the fact Silver Age Superman author Curt Swan himself made the art of this final classic story makes the experience much more emotional. This story is so satisfying and conclusive that it makes the last episode of Dragon Ball GT look like Lost in comparison.
That's an oddly specific comparison to make 😆 DBGT
Great comment! As far as the video’s remark that this is an in-continuity kill, I would argue that it isn’t. It falls into the category of the old “imaginary stories” from the silver age, albeit a pretty dark one!
Side note: the second part of this story (from Action) was the first Superman comic I ever bought!
@@derykdawe2202
It's true this story was imaginary, but as Moore himself said in the opening narration: "Aren't they all?"
So you're complimenting GT? What was the point of that comparison.
It's pretty curious that Golden Age Superman was very similar to his Injustice counterpart, considering his violent treatment towards criminal and his fierce anti-war actions. If not for the fact that he was considerably weaker than his main counterpart and never had to fight massive threats like Brainiac or Darkseid that could have pushed him to the edge, he sure would have become the monster we know in the Injustice games
Golden age Supes was pushing out pain like a-HURT-LOCKER !!! But,this was late 1930s,then early 1940s,different audience and thank the gods,no social media or whiny fanboys. LOL.Lot of things happening in america and the world back then.
He going crazy lol 😅
The difference is that Injustice superman is a fascist dictator, whereas Golden Age superman is a superpowered union bruiser. He doesn't go around actively murking criminals (he actually busts petty criminals out of jail if he thinks they had a good enough reason), it's just that he doesn't care if the really bad ones die in the process.
@@realkosherpork9223 true but that’s super man lol
OG golden age is as strong as Silver age so thats b.s
I love when Superman just stands there and watches the villain die from his own poisonous gas. Just stands and watches him!!!!
Do more heroes and villains breaking their codes. This was a great episode.
And they say Batman is to brutal
Too
10:35 *Sad fact:* In Action Comics 583, Clark is visited from the XXX century by a teenager Kara, who is unaware of her death during the recent Crisis on Infinite Earths. Despite the enormous emotional blow Clark suffers from seeing a rejuvenated version of his recently deceased cousin, he manages to avoid breaking down so that she doesn't know what happened to her, managing to maintain his composure even when Kara asks him if she is now a beautiful woman
Supergirl died again?!
@2:01 "Un-alivement" is my new favorite euphemism. Thank you!
I will hand it to you. Of all of the comic sites on youtube...your explanations and insight are the very best. I wish this existed when i was a kid.
Speaking of Injustice, it's quite curious that the JLA of said universe literally make the members of the Crime Syndicate look like heroes by comparison. Despite the fact that this society is openly evil, it has much higher morals than the Justice League of the Injustice universe, despite the fact that the latter are supposed to have the function of saving the world. While the IJL members had no qualms about killing their own members at the slightest dissonance, the Syndicate didn't think twice about risking their lives to rescue Superwoman from prison even though they had lost their powers and barely could defend themselves. That, my friends, is called friendship and honor.
The 1930s was a difficult time. The depression had just hit a few years before. The memories of ww1 were still fresh in peoples minds. Life was cheap back then, so it’s no surprise to see some death.
Can you do the history of zorro, judge dredd, Cassie hack, qwenpool, hit monkey, vamperrella, moon girl & devil dinosaur and league of extraordinary gentlemen
It was perfect.. PERFECT.. everything.. down to the last minute details.
*In a parallel universe*
Superman: "I can't believe I just killed him. No one, especially Superman, should kill in cold blood, even if the victim is a monster like the Joker. I will imprison myself in the Phantom Zone until my soul finds peace, like my "Generations" counterpart did."
Batman: "I'm glad to hear that, Clark. I knew you were better than him in the end. And now, he won't do any harm anymore..."
Joker Spirit: "F*ck!"
I swear I've read this exact same comment, somewhere else
That would be an permanent lost for the joker I wonder how the world would be without supes and joker around
Batman's little love-in with Joker would make him massively unpopular with the public of the city he loves being constantly subjected to widespread death and destruction.
I honestly prefer Superman when he follows his established moral code because he shows that there are better ways to stop villains than to kill. Superman would still not kill if he could avoid it.
Injustice superman - Corrupted superman.
Red Son superman - Misguided superman
Ultraman - Evil superman/Anti-superman
Bizzaro - Mirror reflection of superman.
Since you did the history of Midnight Man, Are you going to do history of other Moon Knight villains like Arthur Harrow, Shadow Knight, Bushman, the Zodiac Cartel, Stained Glass Scarlet, Moon_Shade and the Sun-King?
In the John Byrne Superman run, the three Kyrptonians he killed were from an alternate Earth. They were basically as powerful as the Silver Age Superman. Byrne had toned down his powers to a more interesting level, in my opinion.
yea it was the best rendition of Superman. Still powerful but also vulnerable. Plus that pocket Universe story lead to him going nuts and exiled himself in space where he meets Mongol for the 1st time in the Post Crisis era. Which was great too as he wasn't flying across galaxies on his own power and was at risk of suffocating in space. Far better Supes.
Agreed. Byrne's take got me to actually enjoy the character. He had to work harder to stop a foe. His foes were actually capable of harming him, and did!
For me, it's the one where he kills the 3 kryptonians. He knew what had to be done to prevent other world's civilizations from being wiped out. As reluctant as he was, he still did it despite how much value he puts on the lives of everyone.
This would’ve been a great video to drop after Man of Steel released 😂
Also, I think my favorite kills/something new I learned was the reality where Supes and Bats grew up as dictators. Sounds really interesting. The 3 way-Kryptonian kill is my other favorite
THIS!!! “But that isn’t how Superman is supposed to be!” 😂
@@johndinh2913 I’ve never understood why people didn’t see the justification of the kill in Man of Steel, but at the same time Zack Snyder should’ve did more to build the Supes everyone knows and loves
@@MadeByDW That's why. It was too soon. Plus, in an earlier draft, Zod was supposed to be sent to the Phantom Zone but Zack and David S. Goyer decided to change it.
@@TMSokoya I personally think the opposite, a younger Supes having to kill and then deciding to never kill again makes sense, it just wasn’t what we got
@@MadeByDW It doesn't make sense, because if he were put in the same exact situation down the line, his decision not to kill in that moment would seem hypocritical when he's done it before. It would be more impactful if an established Superman, who has followed a strict no-kill rule across multiple movies, is presented with a situation where he has exhausted all other options, and he's forced to break that rule in order to protect countless lives. The audience and the character will both feel the weight of that decision because he would've been built up as a role model and a symbol of hope.
I think the one about him offering those three kryptonian’s was just crazy
Superman is honestly the best superhero
Please do video about History of Kraven the Hunter, history of Chameleon and a video about Spider-Man clone saga and Superior Spider-Man. Also add with that time J. Jonah Jameson becomes Mayor
7:30 If you think "Speeding Bullets" was a bizarre Superman comic, you should definitely read "Last Son of Earth", in which Clark Kent is a human sent to Krypton in a space rocket when the Earth is devastated by a disaster. Growing up on Krytpon, he wears a special exoskeleton in order to survive the planet's gravity. After finding a Green Lantern Ring, Clark finds the Earth heavily damaged and, after imprisoning the tyrant Lex Luthor, decides to restore the planet by giving the survivors of the disaster Kryptonian and Amazonian technology. He is forced to abandon his power ring to stay on Earth, but he still has superpowers thanks to his body's accommodation to Kryptonian gravity. Trust me, both this story and its sequel "Last Stand on Krypton" is one of the most WTF things ever written in superheroes' story
YOOOOOO I LOVED SON OF EARTH, Its such a fun and clever elseworlds!!
Superman unleashed is nearly unstoppable, and I’m here for it
Can you do one with Flash and Batman also? I loved the stories you told today.
Golden age Superman was basically judge jury and executioner back in the day which made sense because back in the day all the heroes in the 1940s killed people especially during world war 2.
Clark told Lois “We smokin’ on that Mxyzptlk pack tonight.” lol
“Just letting them fall to their unaliveness” 🤣🤣🤣
Arris! Tim! Got a History Of episode request. I grew up watching the Legion of Superheroes cartoon so any chance we can get History of Imperiax?
When is the podcast coming back?😊
I remember when he originally killed the Phantom Zone criminals back in the late 80s. The first time he used lethal force and the impact his decision has on him. It still haunts him today.
10:06 it is justifiable in comics but when MoS movie does it everybody goes bananas
Easily
Superman killing is so bizarre scarry and out of character
Nope it's not, if he has to do as a last resort he will especially omncidial manaic threats such Zod or Doomsday. Heck even Batman has done same if the whole earth or universe at stake.
@@supoa9489 okay bro thanks
Clark doesn't necessarily have a "no-kill" rule per se, he just REALLY tries not to and absolutely despises taking life, but WILL do it if left with no other choice and always feels terrible about it and he always holds himself responsible.
What do you think the murdering Superman would be like if he met Homelander? How do you think these two would get along with each other?
Even homelander is not that stupid to mess with a guy like superman good or bad
Superman fans who don’t read comics: but Superman doesn’t kill
It’s honestly frustrating talking to some of these people
Their response: That's not the real Superman.
superman once said to the joker after joker implanted bombs all over metropolis bcz he got tired of batman and wanted to try his luck with supes
" batman doesnt kill bcz he has a code but i dont have a code i just generally dont kill ".
Personally, I'm not a fan of Superman killing. One of the main factors that makes Superman so great is that he has so much power, but chooses to help rather than harm. Best demonstrated in "What's So Funny About Truth, Justice and The American Way?" - Though I do appreciate when writers utilises his past killings for character development. The Superman/Aliens crossover referenced a story from a decade or few before where Superman was forced to kill three powerful Kryptonians.
The wonder woman kill was unbelievable
She should've known what was coming after killing Batman.
Can you do history of the characters mentioned in this video?
There's also an early issue of action comics where superman accidently drops a bad guy he is carrying in the middle of leaping between buildings because the guy was struggling so hard, makes no attempt to save him, and then blames him for his own death and says he's better off that way
What do you think Superman would be like if he had the power to resurrect everyone he killed?
Even more terrifying since he can kill the snake person over and over again?
Dead
It cost him his life to kill Doomsday the first time
@@ComicBookGuy420 not if he had a white lantern ring✌️✌️✌️
@@thenightHunter16 and if that had been a part of the question posted my answer would have been different
✌️✌️✌️
Always great hteat story from dc and then making the story❤❤❤❤
Nice!
Can you do history of the Elementals, Cyclone and Sandman along with Kurt Conners the Lizard, Rhino, Kraven the Hunter, Chameleon, Scorpion and the Human Fly along with the Tinkerer, Alistair Smythe the Ultimate Spider Slayer, Living_Brain, and Prowler?
NICE MIKE TURNER PIC
People complain about MOS movie and him killing Zod "my superman doesn't kill", but somehow forget he done killed a bunch of ppl before.
Pretty much all the occasions he gave us were people making him kill or someone changed something about him. Every occasion except for the Mxyzptlk one was not his fault
@JosiahTheBrain how is his this different from Zod he was definitely forced to make a decision he didn't want to make how else would he have stopped him
i think a flash video of this idea would be cool
No matter how you slice it. Superman is "The Man". He's number one. On top of the heap. Rolling 7's
Can you do this for other superhero’s Batman, Ironman green lantern, flash, Thor, captain America?
Do this for Batman as well.
For a sec I thought the thumbnail said Everytime Superman Kills Hope
Are you going to do history of Jentorra, Kryler(played by Bill Murray), Multiple Man, Cassie Lang as Stature/Stinger and the city of Chronopolis in honour of the Ant-Man and the Wasp Quantumainia movie?
Best superhero
If there's no body...it doesn't count😊
Dame bring back that golden age Superman 😂😂😂 would kill to see Lex's reaction to him 😂
I have that Superman/Batman Absolute Power storyline and it was awesome. Would love to see that done as a DCAU movie. Have the entire John Byrne run as well, including that Superman 22. First thing I thought of when some people had an issue with Superman snapping Zod's neck in Man of Steel and people saying that he's never offed anyone.
I had no issue with SUPES snapping Zod's neck,he told him to-STOP-Zod said: NEVER.And paid the price. LOL. Plus,if Zod had lived, there was no where to imprison Zod,where he couldn't break out of.Then he'd battle SUPES all over again and Metropolis would be-WRECKED- again !!!
John Kent Superman recently met the Injustice Superman. You guys not covering that, is a crime bigger than anything Joker could come up with
I've been trying to get into dc comics but I have no idea where to start from does anyone have any good recommendations.
My favorite is when he kills Ultraman to save Jon. New Tom Taylor.
Superman going the Homelander way 😂
Superman was Homelander before Homelander lol
Superman killing Zod and the others Kryptonians during the in continuity era of John Byrne's Action Comics run is my favorite but you got something wrong. Superman didn't kill Brainiac and Imperiex; the big bang simply scattered their consciousnesses across the entire universe. He specifically says in the issue that he found a way to beat them without killing them. It was also the first time it was established in continuity that spending time in the heart of the sun supercharges his power levels.
The absolute best Superman trilogy where he kills is"The Red Glass Trilogy". This is when Superman loses his mind and kills the entire Justice League except Wonder Woman. This Trilogy was absolutely amazing.
So when are you going to do history of DC Despero since he is one of the biggest Justice League Villians from the Comics?
Boy scout my ass! XD
Also we need another video like this but about Batman!
Oh yeah didn’t superman also kill someone in kingdom come?
Superman is freaking hardcore son.
RIP MICHAEL TURNER
No buy list? 😢
I am on the fence on this. I get the OG 30's Superman killing. With WW11 and a different time. But in the 21st century it seems like almost a fetish for comic book writers to 'out dark' each other and see exactly how ridiculously violent they cane make their characters (Marvel is seriously guilty of this). I really do want then to back to making their heroes actual heroes. Just my personal option.
well, my new favourite is definitely Injustice Superman killing Ultraman from Earth-3 while Jon Kent watches in disbelief
What about a video every time the Punisher didn't kill?
He's been a killer since day one 😂
Don't let this distract you from the fact Donkey Kong punched the moon out of its orbit.
7:03
The comic tries so hard to justify that Superman didn't kill Brainiac and Imperiex by pushing them into the big bang too.
The comic had him a murderboner, but when he realized that "killing" Imperiex would by like shooting a live bomb, he decides to push him into the BIG BANG.
And then has Superman say "A Superman doesn't kill" afterword. If being dispersed by a big bang can't kill you, then the whole moral killing dilemma pushed through that entire arc was pointless.
Supes isn't the only hero of the old days to kill as Capt. Marvel, Batman and others are shown ending villains permanently.
The last story is actually kinda freaky in a weird way
How long till you do history of America-Chavez, Speed and Wiccan since these Young Avengers played a major role in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness? Can you please do history of them in honour of the release of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness?
Yh, Superman was really catching BODIES!
Fernando comic's never seems to fail in bring the heat in superman
Killing isn't the answer but sometimes...
2:06 Honestly If anything, killing someone who did things like that is oddly tame.
Does the doomsday fight count as a death? Because didn't they beat each other up so much to the point where they were both pretty much in a deep coma
Superboy prime: This new heroes have no morals they just kill we need to go back to how things were
How things were:
Cool
Injustice when he killed Mogo😱
What would happen if we saw Superman committing these massacre on the Big Screen or TV Shows?
I believe TDKR Superman did some unaliving
I need see one for Batman i want to see the people Batman has taken their life's 😅😅🙂✌️ this two prefer not to kill buh I'll love to see u do another episode for Batman 🙂🙂✌️
Whenever you’re not killing and putting villains in the prison, they break out and kill a lot of people again and then put them in prison. You’re not saving people you’re just saving urself. Villains wouldn’t kill people if you already kill them before they can kill more people
In the name of all these alternate earths that exist in DC, It wiuld he something if they brought the 30's Superman with his brand of justice to today's intepretation to see how he fits in this world...he would definetly be considered a villain for outright killing the bad guys mercilessly...maybe this trope has been done before but that exact superman was replaced for a good reason...injustice was turned by trauma into that persona but that superman came out like that so ut would be interesting to see his point of view of why he does what he does.
Again i say maybe this premise has been explored before (i dont know that much) but Issue #1 superman would be an interesting foil to today's comic book narrative...especially to the boy scout bashers and the whole evil superman movement.
i've got beef with superman... i want to put him in a jar of pickle juice and aggressively shake the jar
When cavil rejected the superman role, he killed the dceu
Superman 😤
💚
Can you do another video like this but about Batman instead.
What about kingdom come and Justice lord superman?
Man.
Golden Age Batman and Superman were fucking psychopaths.
Why do they only record Superman killing humans or significant Villans, but never the Villan's minions?....lol
They almost had super man a villain at first.
You know when I see a video about all the time Superman has kill I expect to go thru them all even injustice it’s like talking about conflict and history and glossing over ww2 and calling it mainstream and everyone knows about it when there more to it but idk that just my 2 cents
you missed when he smoked Joseph Stalin in red sun. Maby that was just the movie.
