I think I'm conflicted when it comes to music from bands.
On the one hand, if they do an album that sounds the same as the last album, it's like they aren't trying, it's the same old same old. On the other hand they do something different and you don't like it as much because it's not the same sound.
While at the same time you are perfectly happy to listen to the old songs repeatedly.
I think music represents a time and place for us. Music not only sets the mood, but adopts the mood. It's second only to smell in memory triggers.
Nostalgia is a hell of a drug.

This is great observation and commentary!! And hopeful.. unlike so many who insist music requires a continual revolution of innovation and appeal. Music of any era will always be relevant in the present. Many of us are old enough to remember our opinions of the modern music of the 70’s. Interestingly, much of what we despised then is now cherished. 2024 is definitely a new challenge in terms of finding ‘great’ music when there’s so much to sort through. There’s so much great music today, maybe not on the top 100 but it’s out there. I enjoy digging for it.

Been thinking about this too....and my conclusion: If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I see a lot of comments about how Hendrix, had he lived, would have ventured into musical worlds unknown, etc, etc. My guess is - Hendrix in his 70's would probably have sounded pretty close to Hendrix in his 20's, unless he'd completely changed his instrument and genre of choice.....this has been true for all the guitar greats that I follow at least, so I'm guessing it may be true across the spectrum

Fans don’t really want their artists of choice to grow or change. Just look at how petulant and whiney Metallica fans got during the load / reload era.

In the previous century people were exposed to good musicianship. Nowadays one has to dig deep and look for it. A lot of effort now goes into recording and marketing your music while musicians in the past were focussed on making just the music.
Music is like a product much more than it used to be, as a package it is much more a DIY kind of thing (music, recording, marketing, touring) and one simply does not have the time and qualifications in order to get everything done and maybe as should or intended. Why does in the top 40 everything more or less sound the same...because of the top 40 not musicianship.
Few got away with it but were already on top of their game (David Bowie and Rolling Stones). The latter were given advice to become a brand (logo) and had qualified people running the backoffice sort of speak. Bowie (who was obsessed becomming famous) had almost given up on making music but was pretty succesfull writing for others when Ziggy Stardust launched and the now famous US tour went for the deep pockets of the record company with a fake it till you make it attitude. Bowie was smart enough to attract great musicians around him and reinvented himself with every new hype and more or less do something else. Look at the charts and NOT do that.
Take the roots of blues, jazz, rock & roll and electronic music (musique concrete etc.)...everything seems so diluted nowadays.
David Gilmour 🤠 Top 3 of my fav guitarists/musicians (together with Frank Zappa, Jimi Hendrix and Kraftwerk 😉).
