So much history about Hartford, where I grew up in (COT)... Never knew it had trolley cars in Hartford... I worked at Constitution Plaza for the parking company (Swartz) which had underground parking. The company ran most or all of the parking garages and lots in Hartford.. This included the underground parking under the BOAT building and the Travelers ...Always love the Lights festival they had during the Holidays..
Dan, thank you so much for definitely identifying the LB Haas & Co building on State St. In the 1950s my father was the accountant and office manager for Haas. In those days most men had to work Saturday mornings, and my Dad often took me along on Saturdays and I would wander the warehouse and meet people. The Haas' were kind and generous people. Later on I worked on their farms and new warehouse at 650 Windsor St, still standing. I worked for other CT tobacco growers too. As a 9-10 year old on State St I grew to love the aroma of curing tobacco in that building, and made a career out of it. Thank you for your project.
Dan thank you so much! I believe I found my GG grandfather in the Greer's directory in 1881 it says helper 50 State. He had just immigrated from England. I'm trying to find him William Knight Lewis. Also his wife also an immigrant from Ireland Mary Lawless Lewis they lived in Hartford until the moved to Texas in1887. Do you have any suggestions on where I might look for more information? The first two of their 6 children was born in Hartford a Rhoda and Joseph Henry Lewis.
I could have went for a short stroll. Shopped for boots then a big hardware store then had Chinese food. Then bought a cheep suit! Now nothing thanks for sharing!
Here is a link to a WP article with more about what a Chinese "Tong War" is (6:19) ????? I didn't realize that Hartford had such a substantial Chinese gang culture. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tong_Wars
