Proper Gypsy Jazz Chords to "la mer"

  • I am explaining idiomatic chord voicings here, that are used in the style of gypsy jazz or jazz Manouche.
Of course these chords exist in other styles, too, yet - some voicings are very related to certain styles, same as the way you play progressions, be it as a soloist or rhythm guitarist.

These are played and recorded live by Stefan Rey on bass and me on rhythm guitar.
So you are playing with a top rhythm section, for I'm backing up some of the best players on scene like Joscho Stephan, Sandro Roy, Wawau Adler and more.
The playalongs offer a realistic amount of choruses and a little arrangement, which makes them even suitable, playing live gigs alone, if you are playing without a band.

Thanks Sven. I knew this song would be a deep well of turnarounds and chord changes, not to mention your classic substitutions and knowledge of the style. I'm also super impressed with your ability to talk over the changes. It shows just how deep your technique and practice goes. I think I'm going to need a t-shirt that says "I learned rhythm from Sven!" :)

Left my job a week ago and maybe wouldn't have come across this song to learn otherwise. Serendipity perhaps. Been playing guitar for a long time but really having to work for this one. I am excited to learn all these new chord voicing, like waking up out of a musical slumber. I can't wait to play this for my Dad when I head home soon. He is a huge Grapelli fa and is going to love it! Thank you!

Beautiful. I've been playing passably most of my life. This gave me such a lift to find a genre I'd never tried.
My classical guitar too wide necked so I'm off to borrow a steel string.
Googling up what on earth that guitar is you're playing... absolutely stunning sound. Hope it's not too expensive ❤❤

    Somewhere beyond the sea
    Somewhere waitin' for me
My lover stands on golden sands
And watches the ships that go sailin'.
    Somewhere beyond the sea
    Somewhere watchin' for me
If I could fly like birds on high
Then straight to her arms I'd go sailin'.
    It's far beyond the stars
    It's near beyond the moon
    I know beyond a doubt
My heart will lead me there soon.
    We'll meet beyond the shore
    We'll kiss just as before
Happy we'll be beyond the sea
And never again I'll go sailin'.
    I know beyond a doubt
My heart will lead me there soon
    We'll meet ... I know we'll meet ... beyond the shore
    We'll kiss just as before.
Happy we'll be beyond the sea
And never again I'll go sailin'.
    No more sailin' ...
    So long sailin' ...
    Bye, bye sailin'...
    Move on out, captain ...
    So long, ensign ...

You're an excellent teacher, and your videos are treasures for any guitarist interested in Gypsy Jazz !
All your guitars are excellent (I saw an Hofner in an other video which was so beautiful and sounded so well).
Thank you again for finding the time to teach less skilled guitarists !
Does you guitar maker have a online site to check his work, I'm curious...
Waiting for your latest video ! (maybe one on "My Serenade" one of my favorite's Django tune).

Hey Jazz players, could you please have a pity on us? We all eternal beginners.
Chords are boring. Why don't you pull of the 6 E string ,🤔 there are enough E in standard tuning😂.
With 5 strings chords could be much easier.
