  • Catching up on the garage conversion project! A few weeks back we managed to get the additional blockwork done and the first window installed. No top marks for the masonry skills but we did what we could! ;-)

    Tim you make it look so diy doable, and enjoyable to watch your ups and downs, we might do same as you and replace the original wooden garage window which has severe wood rot all around the frame, Peter

    I don’t know about you but I always felt like I spent more energy and time planning and prepping than what I expended on the project 😄

    Did a similar job on my garage last summer. Got 4 used windows for a grand total of £10. Had to cut the concrete down of the single skin prefab garage with a 9inch grinder. You can add wd40 within the predrilled holes which aids the screws when screwing in. Also used a ratchet wrench to screw them as the drill was difficult to control

    Awesome seeing different ways of doing things and different codes...We could never install window in mortar like that here in Canada.

    'Straighter than the rest of the building'. Yep that's what I keep saying too. Just started renovating a 1910ish timber framed ex fishing lodge with 1960s brick extension in N Devon. Way more work than I bargened for but great fun. Inspiring watching you Tim even if we do differ on the aesthetics of raised beds. 😉

    Nice. Always generally short first. The longer has more flex makes it easier to go in.

    Btw the beads/scotia help conceal the cracks where the plaster abuts the window and when new it will look fine but very quickly a crack will appear at that point which is normally concealed behind the plastic trim/scotia

    • @TheRestorationCouple
      @TheRestorationCouple  5 лет назад

      A bead of flexible caulk has always a fine job at covering the transition a bit more discreetly. 👍

    You didn't use a cavity closer - Only expanding foam, will this be sufficient to control cold bridging which causes mould and damp. It's awhile since i fitted windows but i do remember we always fitted them across the cavity using fixing cleats and fixed to interior wall - Maybe this has changed since i last fitted windows.

    Great stuff Tim! Just wondering why you didn't go for cavity closers though? Or perhaps it was just another journey to make and you needed to crack on, which would be very understandable. It's just when I see them in books they look a good product, don't know how much they cost though.

    • @TheRestorationCouple

      Just because I had so many offcuts of PIR to use and was internally insulting the reveals anyway, I.e both in and over cavity. 👍

    Do you know where I can buy uPVC or composite window frames? I have a bunch of double glazed units but need new frames. Can’t find anywhere that sells the frames without glass

    Just a point regarding the nonsense that is ‘Fensa Certified’ window installers, I fitted double glazed windows and a door to a house i was renovating and when it came to selling the house I informed my Solicitor about this and they told me that it was not a problem as they could get an indemnity insurance which cost me about £35. Obviously different matter when building an extension as the Building Inspector will sign off on the windows/doors anyway as i am also currently doing.

    • @TheRestorationCouple
      @TheRestorationCouple  5 лет назад

      Yes we have some in the main house that need signing off or insurance if we sell.
