Wouldn't go (off) on you great that your so honest i love him singing this in rehearsals with the mischievous glint in his eyes and that smile when he mixes the words up to a naughty version, love Elvis
To me Elvis sang everything better, no matter what he was doing a cover of. It's his voice that really gets me on this one, though, it's so beautiful ❤ I mean, his voice was always amazing, but at this point in his career it was even more beautiful 😊
I love Elvis. He would probably be furious with RCA for releasing recordings that he didn't finish or ever intend to be out there, but us fans have always been ravenous for every scrap of Elvis we can get, so I feel bittersweet about their practice of "if we have a recording, we release it". Sorry, Elvis, but I even love to hear you just messing about with a song. Others have given the background to this song in the comments, so I won't repeat it.
Elvis's record company cobbled together versions of songs that Elvis never meannt for release! This feels more like a rehearsal, not a finished rendition.
Elvis is my hero! But i'm not sure this was a serious take! He barely knows the words, aounds more like a jam/rehearsal. Could have been very special, if Elvis had been more invested! Love the King!
Elvis knew only a few lines of the song and was unable to complete it without the lyric sheets. He later abandoned the idea of recording Hey Jude after the takes they got that first night, leaving an incomplete recording. Trust RCA to slap it onto another album they wanted fleshed out, scratchy vocals and all.
Indeed, and after Elvis died, they released EVERYTHING they could find which was never meant to be released at all. Overall, though, I'm glad they did because there were some real gems that we would never have heard otherwise.
There is something about this song. It doesn't allow for much interpretation other than what the Beatles did. What can you do with it that wasn't done originally. Elvis sings it beautifully but it is not really his kind of song. I'd just as soon listen to Elvis as the Beatles though I never really liked this song. There are so many great songs to come. P.S. I'll have to admit to never having been a fan of the Beatles, but I did like a handful of their songs but by other artists. Which reminds me of Hank Williams - he wrote some of the greatest music, but I couldn't listen to him sing it.
Yeah, I don’t know the story behind this recording, it may have been a rehearsal because he does it great in concert! I like both Elvis and the Beatles-for different reasons-but I would choose the live version anytime.
An off-the-cuff rehearsal recording used as a filler for the "Elvis Now" album, (hence the incomplete lyrics). Elvis covered several of the Beatles' songs in rehearsals or live renditions & blew them away, with the exception of "Hey Jude". A nice song, but borders on being monotonous & is definitely more suited to the Beatles style. Seph, I was smiling at you, so carefully choosing your words, not wanting to come down too hard, such a "priceless" & honest reaction 👏❤
Yes, the lives are great & you know I always thought "Something" from "Aloha" was the best rendition, until I heard the version from Las Vegas opening night in August 1970, it's just perfection.
This gets caned by many dyed in the wool Elvis fans, but I sort of enjoy it. Only one real take done before engineers started fiddling about with it. What I find interesting is his vocal intonation which seems to be a bit experimental.
You really need to hear the live version from Vegas. It way different, never heard this version. I think you will be way more impressed in the Vegas live version.
A good honest review. With a little Help of my Friends covered by Joe Cocker was good but it took me a long time to accept it and like it. But Joe gave 150% on his Beatle cover. Personally if I didn't hear Elvis' Hey Jude again i would be fine. You are right it lacked something.
This song is just a jam recorded in 1969, and someone decided to add more instruments and release it in 1971. He doesnt even know the lyrics, so he should at least re-recorded it.
Real, honest reaction…this is the one and only song, I’ve ever heard Elvis sing that I can barely get through… That being said… Elvis is the greatest ever, & without question.. I am a HUGE fan..all of his songs are covers as he didn’t write.. what Elvis did do better than any other is interpret and draw you in, in such a way that you felt the pain and emotions the writer intended… with this one exception (out of 850 songs) once Elvis covered in his way he owned the song… & that’s the name of that tune!! SDJ…
Where do you get that Elvis never wrote his songs? He wasn't a dedicated "songwriter", but he did initiate and co-wrote many of his original works - even re-writing words to lyrics brought to him. Also, the almost 800 songs most people seem to mention is only based on the 84 volumes of recordings RCA Victor actually has....a research article "for the billionth time" explains that there was possibly 400 to 500 volumes, most of which are "lost". Anyway, for his input, Elvis is officially credited for co-writing some of his hit songs though he did not like being mentioned. Some hardcore naysayers argue otherwise but that's their problem✌🏼.
I agree, even though Elvis's voice is beautiful, its a filler song for the show for Elvis this one is definatley a Beatles banger they have their heart and soul invested in it, you can feel it when they sing it, its personal to them! but Elvis sings "Yesterday" and its great so when you get to that one you might like it! I agree too on Bridge over Troubled Water I grew up on Simon and Garfunkel's version and loved it but it wasn't until I heard Elvis sing it live that it made me cry and felt in in my soul, it felt like God was literally talking through him because he was so passionate about the song you could feel it it was personal...Hey Jude not so much but its okay if Elvis did every song great he wouldn't be human.
You gave an honest reaction and I agree with you. This is one of the few songs that, in my humble opinion, Elvis's version was good but, does not surpass the Beatles version. I also agree with you about Bridge Over Troubled Waters.
I'm a bit surprised that many well-known Elvis songs are cover songs (Blue Suede Shoes, Hound Dog, Are You Lonesome Tonight, Suspicious Minds, Are You Lonesome Tonight, Always on My Mind, In The Ghetto). I didn't know that.
Almost all singers in the 50's and before did not write their own music - Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, every popular singer of the time. The exception was country/folk music. Writers brought their music to the artists. In the 50's things started to change, but Elvis didn't. He felt others could write better music, I suppose. Elvis co-wrote one song and I've forgotten which it was. Some songs were written especially for him so were not covers, the most famous of which is If I Can Dream and most movie songs.
Seperate Ways was written for him by Red West one of the Memphis Mafia after he and Priscilla Seperated. There were many songs written by song writters either offered to Elvis to sing or especially written for Elvis that weren't covers. In the Ghetto was offered to Elvis by Mac Davis who wrote it. Elvis was the first to Record and Release the 1969 Hit.
If a song was written for Elvis or if he was the first to record it, it wasn't a cover, e.g. If I Can Dream, In the Ghetto. I think Elvis was the first to record Heartbreak Hotel and Can't Help Falling in Love among others.
This song is marmite to most Elvis fans - they either love it or hate it (I said most 'cause it's ok lol - never much cared for the beatles version either mind) - Think also his throat was gone by the time he got round to this. Something like fully recorded 32 songs inc. numerous takes of a lot of songs in a couple of days (i.e. 8 for suspicious minds and a whopping 23 for In the Ghetto).
Clearly a rehearsal version that was heavily dubbed after the fact by RCA. Elvis doesn‘t know the lyrics; I feel he was simply singing a song that he liked as he so often did. The instrumentation, which was added later, gives one the impression that this was an honest attempt at covering a Beatles song, which it isn‘t.
I have a feeling that there might be a lot of fake reactions to this particular version 😅 i might have to look a little later to find out what others have said about it haha
Where Elvis covers are concerned it's not so much about preference as much as how good a version is as a stand alone. Elvis is the kind of interpreter and arranger that he makes a song sound unique. It just hits differently. Where Bridge Over Troubled Waters is concerned I think both Elvis's and Simon and Garfunkel's efforts are tremendous and stand alone. I just lean towards Elvis because I prefer him as an artist. Hey Jude is a personally written song with meaning and needs to be presented as a whole so my one critique of Presley's version is I think he skips or changes some lyrics. It's interesting to note I read Elvis wasn't satisfied with his recording of it for some reason and didn't want it released but RCA did so anyway. My own reservations aside, I think Elvis's treatment is beautiful and his singing plaintive and soulful.
What it's lacking are the Beatles! Elvis definitely had the better voice but I'm not a fan of Elvis singing Beatles' (and I love Elvis) songs except when he incorporated Little Sister with Get Back. So you're right ❤
Seph, I don't know if it’s a contest, of who is the very best sounding artist, but rather it’s an expression and an interpretation of a song, does it “suck” or is it acceptable or even more, not necessarily superior? That’s how I approach it anyway. Thanks! Keep up the Great work!
IMO I don’t think Elvis felt this song. He only perked up and went into using his voice at the end to improvise when he knew it was coming to the end!!! 😜 Also, in Jerry Schilling’s book, “Me and a guy named Elvis” he wrote that the recording company really annoyed Elvis when they messed with his songs after he left the studio and released the recordings without telling him! 👌💕🕺
I don't think it's controversial. I understand. The Beatles were really good. I personally like Elvis's voice better. But I would say in the Beatles my favorite singer is definitely Paul mccartney. But as we would find out later they all had really good voices. My favorite strictly John Lennon song is this song called jealous guy. My favorite strictly George Harrison song is called I got My mind set on you. My favorite Ringo song is you're 16. My favorite Paul McCartney solo is Venus and Mars.
I think the crux of the problem here is that the song is just out of Elvis's comfortable singing range. Paul sang in a higher register than Elvis. Had his band transposed the song down a bit, Elvis's voice may have shined. As it stands, it sounds like he's really reaching for these notes that came naturally to Paul.

You have a point, Seph. This has never been one of my favorites either. I think the Beatles had a much closer connection to this song since it was written by Paul for Julian Lennon to help him with the divorce of his parents and Ono coming on the scene. I don’t think Elvis could feel an emotional connection to the song, and it feels that way to me, too. He makes a good try at it and the vocals are there, but the connection to the lyrics is not. I am not a fan of the ending either. Thanks for your always honest reactions. Again, so great to have you back!!!❤❤❤
I can definitely see why people would consider this one of the best songs ever written. But in my honest opinion Paul and Lennon weren't the best singers. I could throw a stone from my front door and hit a better singer.. But damnnnn could they write a song 🥲
@@SephPlays True. Now don't you go and throw that stone, Seph, next time I might be walking by and then? Just throw it up in the air, it lands next to you and we have a better singer. (In Dylan's case, for SURE!) 😜

Oh man… I knew this day would come, and I’ve been dreading it. This is my least favorite recording by Elvis. The song is in the wrong key for his voice. Compare this to live recordings of Yesterday, or Something, even a medley of Little Sister/ Get Back… all of which were much better. I love the Beatles, but I actually prefer Elvis’ version of Something (especially the arrangement with the orchestra and Kathy Westmoreland’s beautiful soprano)!
Elvis sang songs he liked and sometimes in tribute to the original artist. I have to say the one thing I do not like about your reactions is that you compare the artists. You can tell Elvis was simply singing a song and there was no heart in it. The Beatles were great, but what really made them were their writing skills. And that obviously died when they split up; or else they simply ran their course.
I don't think Elvis was particularly "feeling it" either. I feel like he was trying to sing it too high. One of the few covers he did that I don't really like that much. And if it's cobbled together by RCA I see why it didn't come together that well.
- - - Not a great song, and I didn't even care for the excessively long version the Beatles did. In Elvis' case, this is one of those songs elvis fooled around with, where he'd often just do bits & pieces of a ton of songs in his recording sessions to break up boredom. This song was ever intended to be a single, nor a hit. RCA wound up putting it on the Elvis Now album. I'm sure if Elvis knew this was going to be put out, I'd think he would have been more serious.
It's less aggressive, but grooves more than the Beatles version. EP obviously didn't take it too seriously. He didn't even learn the words past one verse. He's also not a hippie. Not a fan of the song regardless. I don't listen to it period.
You are comparing one to Four. Fair? Their edge is their writing skills. Elvis voice is sexy and manly. Beatles voice were average. Not going off on you, don:t make me come over there. Thanks Seph,
Mary i think you might have to watch this video again because i never made that comparison? I said that the song lacked a soul and that i preferred beatles version over Elvis's, but i never said Elvis's voice was worse then Johns or Pauls. Seriously i would never say that... Im going on record here! Elvis Presley is the best singer in the world! "along with Freddie Mercury" And yes i agree Paul and john are definitely average when compared to Elvis Presley. if it wasn't for their song writing skills they would have never been famous at all.
I don’t like The Beatles and this song I think was never supposed to be released he was just in rehearsal I think 🤔 I’ve never heard it otherwise so I don’t have an opinion. To me it’s Elvis 🤷♀️ all the covers he does of The Beatles I’ve only heard Elvis sing. I have gone back to hear them from The Beatles but just can’t get into it. Or maybe it’s Paul McCartney talking bad about Elvis either way it’s a NO for me. TCB⚡️
There are better versions of elvis doing this song more like a jamming session wich has more passion in it and is more fun this version has been tampered with to make it sound clearer wich dosnt work with this song

"along with Freddie Mercury"
And yes i agree Paul and john are definitely average when compared to Elvis Presley. if it wasn't for their song writing skills they would have never been famous at all.
I know Hon just messin' with ya. Be Blessed.@@SephPlays
TCB⚡️
Elvis sang this song better!
There are better versions of elvis doing this song more like a jamming session wich has more passion in it and is more fun this version has been tampered with to make it sound clearer wich dosnt work with this song
