The good news (for most of you, I hope!): this is largely because there’s going to be a second Nick 13 solo album & recording is already underway - much of the music has already been cut!
      There’s still plenty to do & I’ll share more when I can, but finishing this record is going to be what a lot of my time revolves around this summer/fall. Lots of exciting things to come, but I’m gonna miss seeing your faces in October. As always, TxAxNxDx - n13♤"

    The Reverend Horton Heat is the king of Psychobilly! The best musicianship, the most creativity, AND the most respect for the punk and rockabilly traditions (1993’s definitive “The Full Gospel Sounds…” is my fav Rev album). His guitar playing is recognized by the masterful torchbearer of rockabilly, Brian Setzer, who has frequently stepped on stage to play with the Rev. No other psychobilly project has come close to being as good…yet. He and his faithful bassist, Jimbo Wallace, set the standard in the late 80s, increasing the energy level of the lineage set forth by psychobilly’s seminal band, The Cramps.
    The 3rd wave-or-so bands you’re now exploring are cool, but I think they owe more to the likes of rockabilly-flavored Social Distortion than traditional rockabilly or psychobilly’s first wave of The Cramps, Rev Horton Heat, Meteors. Though not psychobilly proper as there isn’t direct punk influence (musically), Stray Cats are essential to the genre as well. Happy listening!

  • @MrSirhcsellor
    @MrSirhcsellor Месяц назад +23

    It’s a fine line from Rockabilly to Psychobilly really, in terms of sound anyway, but most would agree it crosses over when the guitar gets heavier and the tempos get faster (so more punk), but psychobilly tends to also focus their overall look and their lyrics on darker themes, like horror and classic monsters (zombies, werewolves and vampires especially), it’s like rockabilly + Halloween = psychobilly, basically, it’s like horror punk meets old Elvis style rock and roll, that’s psychobilly. 😄
    Tiger Army walks a fine line, they definitely lean harder into that softer more Rockabilly crooner sound (at least now they do, their first 2 records are really fast and loud, they started slowing things down on record 3, Ghost Tiger Rise), but they always maintained that darker tone and lyrical content, that all psychobilly bands do, so they’re still considered psychobilly. They’re definitely top tier in the genre for sure, so definitely a good pick. Fun fact, Nick was also really good friends with the guys from AFI, and actually sings on a few songs on their older records, ‘Single Second’ being the most obvious one (he sings the chorus).
    Nekromantix are at the top of that list as well (probably the band that really started that genre honestly, other than Reverend Horton Heat or Stray Cats, which I consider more Rockabilly than psychobilly), Gargoyles over Copenhagen is my favourite from them, so also worth checking out.

      @foljs5858 Месяц назад +3

      Came to say this. These guys are hardly representative of Psychobilly. Personally I'd start this guy with the Cramps, Meteors, Nekromantix or something in that vein

    • @MrSirhcsellor
      @MrSirhcsellor Месяц назад +1

      @@foljs5858 I don’t entirely disagree, they haven’t been as psychobilly as of late, so that’s fair. That’s why I said they walk that fine line, whether someone accepts them as psychobilly still (or at all) is really kind of subjective and case by case, and they’d have plenty of room for that argument. Their first 2 records are unquestionably psychobilly though, don’t think anyone would challenge that, then they started focusing on slower softer sounds, more old country kinda vibes, desperado kinda stuff, with a few faster tunes thrown in here and there. But I still consider them psychobilly, personally, because of the darker themes and punk ascetics, and they do still rock a few faster louder songs on every album, but it’s definitely fair to say they’ve trailed off from their roots. I’m definitely biased though, because I like their sound more than any other psychobilly band, they just stand out more, doing their own thing regardless of being shackled to any one genre, and that makes them more interesting for me personally, more variety.
      I’d agree with your picks, all great examples of the genre. I’d throw in Mad Sin and The Brains as well.

The Stray Cats were around at the same time, but were more rooted in the original Rockabilly sound.

    You should check out the song Never Dies from their first album. Great bass riffs in that song. It’s a classic representation of Psychobilly.

    Nick 13 has some great solo stuff. All alone and Carry my body down are standouts. It's kind of like folk/country. Really hard to pin down. Has some amazing slide guitar stuff on it too

    Fun fact (since you did an AFI song before)- Davey (AFI singer) does back up vocals on a lot of Tiger Army songs and Adam (AFI drummer) played drums on the first TA album

    in my opinion when it comes to essentials of psychobilly is Tiger Army, Demented are go, The Hillbilly Moon Explotion, The Brains, Nekromantix, The Creepshow, Koffi Kats and Mad Sin now this is my opinion but i have realised that a lot of people have a lot of different bands they consider essential bands in psychobilly but these are the ones that made me love the genre the most.

    Great to see some Tiger Army!! Never thought I’d get to see psychobilly reactions from such a legit channel like yours. But as a fan and an upright bass player myself, I absolutely love it!!
    Tiger Army is a great entry point for the genre! Bands like Tiger Army, Horrorpops, and Nekromantix were my first exposure and led to me falling in love with the genre. Hardcore fans might say that they deviate from the original psychobilly sound that earlier bands had, but I think it’s just a continuation of it. Almost a second wave of sorts.
    Now that you’ve broken the ice I’d say the next logical step would probably be Nekromantix (amazing upright bass player and builder!), or some earlier Tiger Army.
    Lots of other great bands too, but it helps to wet your feet a little bit first haha. That’s how it happened for me anyway.

    How do you know a psychobilly fan has been rubbing one off?
    The Outsiders novel is open on his bed stand.
    How do you know he got off?
    The Outsiders VHS is playing on his tv.

    if you ever want to check out the "hardcore" Psychobilly side of music, try the band Os Catalépticos. They're from Bazil, they play super fast. The double bass on their tracks is pretty impressive. Terrible Nightmares is a good song.

    One of my favorite tracks of all time! This reminds me of when he first heard "Drag My Body" by Hot Water Music. I'm a drummer and I'm obsessed with these songs! So cool too see my feelings validated when you see a pro like this hear it for the first time. Like, I think they're sick bass songs, but I don't really know the instrument. Much respect.
    edit: I didn't fully watch the video before commenting and he mentioned Hot Water Music later in the video!! Wow. Love this channel. Love punk rock!

    I don’t usually comment as i enjoy all music. However, after watching your living End revue and you discussion on psychobilly i must insist on you checking out the Aussie band from 90s called The Fireballs. Their gigs were insane and i feel they personify Pyschobilly. Hope you check em out on youtube and enjoy!!! So worthy.

    One of their "tamer" songs although equally awesome. Please dig into some of their faster tunes. "Cupid's Victim," "Incorporeal," and "Annabelle Lee." For a more "moody" feel..."In rhe Orchard." Soooo good!
