A great result but the score flattered us and in the long run was a disaster. It was a very tight first half 1-1 and then seconds before HT Gerrard scores a wonder strike to make it 2-1.... The second half we caught them 3 times on the counter and were clinical each time.... The problem with this result long term is that everyone thought Sven was this great manager. He was a disaster and nearly as bad as Southgate.

Southgate with all due respect is not fit for purpose. Main job of any manager is to instill trust, confidence and belief into the people being managed. I will be watching the game 4am in the morning New Zealand time. Based on what I've seen its going to take a big improvement for England to win this game. It could be a embarrassing exit, the slow pedestrian style of football we are being served up does not excite me and anyone with any pace or go forward with any attacking skill it seems is stuck on the bench. You can't tell me some of these players also think SG is clueless like the rest of us? If we can't beat Iceland at home that's a problem to start with thinking it didn't matter. Unfortunately some managers refuse to believe in the philosophy of the best form of defence is attack. Let me simplify it just in case any managers read this - if you're attacking and in thei opposition's half then it means your goalkeeper isn't being bothered which simply means they are unlikely to score. Simples.
It's the fifa / ifab rules that are the problem. Any ref has to go with the var decision given. So it's not the refs fault, it's the stupid rules. Needs upheaval
In contrast to the ridiculous all out attack idea, I think England should play more square balls back and forth to increase their dominance, say in the area around their 18 yard box. If anyone presses, they can deftly tap it back to Pickford, who can then redistribute it back to the edge of the 18 yard box again, only THIS time to the other side of the pitch, where players can again renew their intricate square ball passing strategy. Liquid football.... This will no doubt fool the Slovakian players, who will simply be overwhelmed at the mounting pressure, and panic. To mix it up, Pickford can also kick it right up the pitch, a truly modern tactic known as 'hoofing', to give a very respectable 50/50 chance of getting posession. Once there, buoyed up by the trumpet and drum warcry from the stands, players will then play it square again to ensure sure all Sovakian players are behind the ball, thus muddying up their defence. Unbeatable. In the unlikely event of the square ball tactic failing to 'pull' the ball into the net, players will then fall back to the Stevie Gerrard 'Hollywood Ball Screamer' technique. This is where a player way outside the 18 yard box feints an intelligent pass but unespectedly tries to melt the ball into the net. If by random chance it passes over the crossbar, it will undoubtedly ricochet off a Row Z seat and curl down into the net. Genius, Southgate. I predict an easy canter to a 4-0 victory.

VAR isn't a problem. The way it's used is. Semi-automated is way quicker and ensures the game flows well. If it's a handball/foul/goal then it should be awarded. The issue is that 'you can't dance well on a 3 legged table' - England currently have some of the best dancers in the world available up front.
The England midfield: woeful compared to most other Euro teams - and it's not the quality of the players available - it's the current awful functioning of the centre mids, in and out of possession.
We are now seeing almost all pundits calling on a 19 yr old to resolve that and haven't seen anythign from Mainoo for England so far that makes me believe he's the solution. He's another very talented young player, he's not got the positional ability to resolve the core issue for England.
There is one midfielder in Southgate's squad that 'could' provide the stabalising 4th leg to the table to enable all our wonderful dancers to light up the tournament; Southgate has refused to give him a chance despite so many opportunities. It'll be sad if we never find out if he's the key :(
