  • I happened so stumble across Battle Aces a few weeks ago & signed up for the closed beta - signups are ongoing - and got in on launch day to check things out. I was really pleasantly surprised by how good the game felt, I didn't have to do the hours of learning and practice I did for Stormgate playing catchup with Starcraft veterans or whatever, I was able to just leap into things & start having a good time.

Quick follow up: according to a reddit post from the lead designer, the slow War Credit (F2P currency) earn rate is due to the system essentially being a blind simplest-possible implementation to test player earn rate while they focus on making the game good. Which isn't ideal short term, but means improvements are likely in later tests. Source: www.reddit.com/r/BattleAces/comments/1dp7jea/war_credits_testing/

As someone who loves traditional RTS, but can't commit to 20-40 minute matches anymore, I'm pretty happy with these upcoming games, and I'm glad you enjoyed them as well.
I think Stormgate is still much closer to what I like, but the low-stress joy of setting a rally point and mashing the buttons works a lot better than I expected, and the option of spending slightly more APM on cool tactics is always there.
Also, F1 F3 to scoop feels so nice I'm always pumped to reevaluate my strategy and go to the next game having learned a little something.

For sure, the quick game time really works in Battle Aces' favor for me. Like in an hour you can think of a new open/strategy & iterate on in several times, 6-12+ games vs like 2-3 in more APM intensive games. The cost of failure is so low that it really encourages tinkering & learning for yourself which I think is great.

Hmm, to me this just looks like a MOBA with more (small) units rather than a single hero. To me, this is not what draws me to an RTS game.
    Looks slick tho.

That's an interesting thought. I think it's easier/simpler to call it an RTS than it is to try and port a bunch of concepts from RTS to MOBAs (workers, constructable bases, etc) but I think the general vibe or design intent is definitely to push it a bit more in that direction in terms of the unit decks, how attention is allocated, ease of play, etc. Which I imagine is probably not going to connect for some number of traditional RTS players, but definitely felt slick to me.

The extremely mature and important shower thought I just had is Fast Action RTS shortens to FARTS, and that just has to be the best way to talk about its genre. Battle Aces out here teaching folks what FARTS are.
