I never knew this miniseries existed, and by sheer accident I am halfway through the book. I can't believe that what I am reading is exactly how I pictured the characters and the plot. Amazing!

Just because the xenophobic populists didn't actually win the White House in the early 1940s doesn't mean they weren't around. There really was an America First crowd. The book warns how those people could easily come to power. So yes: history repeats/rhymes/echoes, etc.

Google the USS liberty incident
Samuel Whitley The USS Liberty, a World War II-era cargo ship refitted as a surveillance vessel, was deployed to the eastern Mediterranean in the days leading up to the war. Its mission was to gather signals intelligence on Israel’s Arab opponents and their Soviet advisers and monitor the situation from international waters off the coast of Sinai, Egypt.
In the morning hours of June 8, 1967, the Israeli aerial reconnaissance spotted an unidentified ship 70 miles off the coast of Gaza. Three hours later, a second reconnaissance flight spotted an unidentified ship 20 miles off the coast of nearby El-Arish. The Israeli Air Force notified the Israeli naval command that these two sightings were the USS Liberty. The ship was marked as neutral and removed from the threat board.
Shortly afterward, the Israeli military received word that El-Arish was under naval bombardment. This report turned out to be an error, but that was not discovered until long after three torpedo boats were dispatched to investigate. The boats spotted a vessel in the vicinity of El-Arish and, based on its speed and its profile, assumed it was an unmarked Egyptian destroyer. The boats called in the ship’s position to the Israeli Air Force.
The vessel in question was, in fact, the Liberty. The crew had just finished a routine attack drill, and was in stand-down mode. At just before 2 p.m. local time, four Israeli fighter planes strafed the Liberty with 30-mm cannons and rocket fire. Several crew members were killed, communications equipment was damaged, and the ship’s flag was knocked down.

In the actual transcript, the tower says in hebrew “הספינה זוהתה כספינה מצרית.”, or “The ship has been identified as an Egyptian ship”, additionally “זו ספינת אספקה מצרית.”, or “It is an Egyptian supply ship”. In a second transcript it’s noted that they clearly are unsure, as they’re quoted in saying “אם הם מדברים ערבית, מצרים, אתה לוקח אותם לאל-ערבית, אם הם מדברים אנגלית, לא מצרים, אתה לוקח אותם ללוד. האם זה ברור?”, or “If they speak arabic, Egyptians, you’re taking them to al-‘arish, if they speak english, non-egyptians, you’re taking them to Lod. Is that clear?”. Beginning at 1:58pm, bombing commenced from Israeli planes. At about 2:11pm, the Israeli planes ceased attacking when questions of the ship’s identity surfaced, unsure about what they hit stating “הם מבקשים שתעברו מעבר נוסף ותבדקו שוב אם זה באמת דגל אמריקאי.”, or “They request that you make another pass and check once again whether it is really an American flag”. 13 minutes later 3 Israeli Motor Torpedo Boats (MTB’s) got with 6000 yards of the Liberty, misidentified the smoke-engulfed vessel from this distance, approached it in an attempt to signal it, was fired on by the Liberty, returned fire, and then converged upon the American ship in an effort to sink her. After a brief exchange of fire (2:31pm-2:35pm) and a torpedo that slammed into the Liberty‘s starboard side, the Israeli vessels abruptly ceased attacking, got close enough to correctly identify the vessel, and extended help and immediate medical attention to the Liberty‘s crew at 3:03pm.

the series/ novel is set in the 1940s. it was published in 2004. Trump isn’t once referred to. If you see this, a story about a fascist getting elected as president of the us, as anti-Trump propaganda.. then that says a whole lot about donald trump, not about the series.

@Hal Jordan hi I think it's because for a long time, hollywood focusesd primarily on male narratives which, while entertaining at times, also led to compounding a lot of sexist ideals into our society. By telling stories centered on women, be they oppressed or not, they're simply trying to catch up!

I finished this novel a month ago, it was my second reading of this book. I love it, it's not an easy work to adapt to a movie or a tv series, but I hope David Simon will do it well.

This looks interesting. The cast is definitely on point. And when I see David Simon and Ed Burns attached to a project...it's usually a definite watch for me. I haven't read the Phillip Roth's novel, but the story and the premise look interesting.
PS Since this deals with alternate history, I really wish someone would adapt the novel "The Company Of The Dead" into a miniseries. It is an gripping and interesting novel, and a quite harrowing look at a "what if" scenario. The source material would be right up HBO's alley.

Hopewell/East Amwell. The County line Mercer/Hunterdon actually ran through the house with the front door being in Mercer and the nursery being in Hunterdon/East Amwell. So therefore the trial of accused kidnapper Hauptmann was held in Flemington in Hunterdon County. The baby's body was found in the woods near Mt Rose which I've driven past many times. A mere crossroads with a scattered collection of houses.

@1:37 they show a hooded klansman - this seems like weird distortion of history, as there was no relationship between the KKK and the campaign to stay out of WW2. Those were totally separate issues.
There were American Nazi groups in the US that Germany used to try to get America to stay out or side with them. So it’s definitely not out of the realm of possibility.

In any looming war situation, there will always be opposition to war, and it doesn't automatically amount to sympathizing with another power. Sometimes people legitimately don't want their loved ones to die being sent off to war. This HBO production seems to spin a conspiracy theory that really muddies the waters, and does no service to actual history. There was an anti-war movement during the Vietnam War, did that make them all Soviet sympathizers? Why should Americans have to fight and die in a foreign war, merely to not be seen as racist? I think that HBO is taking a lot of liberties to claim this.

@@dsizzle355 Whoever's adapting Plot Against America for this would have to improve the ending. It was the weakest point of the book IMO. Lindbergh wakes up one day and realises he's being used by the Nazis, who then try to replace him with his VP (who was some isolationist senator IRL). Coup falls apart when Mrs Lindbergh makes a public statement.

It's one of those deals where you don't want to be wrong so you just don't look. Look at any story where a politician is referred to as a fascist , Try actually researching the policy and put your bias aside because you may be surprised when you find you were duped.
