    Excellent video.
    Two or three months ago I bought the Home Assistant SkyConnect (Zigbee/Thread) and about a month ago I bought two Tapo switches with Matter and it has worked perfectly for me.
    I only had to connect the plugs and Home Assistant discovered it automatically, but it sent me to configure from the application, which I did and the installation was extremely simple and fast and so far I have not had any type of problem.

    I'm having a hard time understanding this video. How was this in any way a "disaster"
    The only 2 matter devices that *exist* today paired on the first try and worked flawlessly.
    This is one of the better implementations I've seen since launch, they just need to make it easier to find the "pair device" button and make the (already one-click) "enable thread on skyconnect" button easier to find.
    Just a little UX improvement and it'll be perfect. A new "Add Matter" button somewhere, and if you try to add a thread device without a border router, prompt you to add one.

    • @reedssmarthome
      @reedssmarthome  Год назад +3

      It was a disaster in getting the two Matter devices working. Go to the Thread integration doc www.home-assistant.io/integrations/thread/ and figure out how to enable Thread on SkyConnect. Doesn't exist. So then you go to the SkyConnect page, that will show you right? www.home-assistant.io/skyconnect/ Nope! You would have to know to go to a blog page that shows how to do it. I seriously could have complained for 30 minutes but I mainly wanted to spare everyone that pain and just show them how it works. So yes it is a disaster.

      @@reedssmarthome Good point that I missed. If something that essential has zero instruction, it might as well not exist.
      I had no idea SkyConnect even had thread support already until I watched this video, and I've been following the development.
      I thought I just missed something but no, even the dedicated SkyConnect page still says Thread support is coming in a future firmware update.
      In other news, it looks like all the Matter documentation assumes you're in the HA beta (settings>system>updates>⋮>join beta channel). The march update at least adds the "Add Matter Device" to the Add Integration menu. Hopefully when it releases they can put out better instructions for enabling Thread.
      Another issue is right now most phones can't even commission Matter devices because your phone needs to specifically support Matter. Even my Pixel 7 can't do it running the latest Android, Google Home beta, and Home Assistant beta.

    • @reedssmarthome
      @reedssmarthome  Год назад

      Right now that's probably the best way since you will have more than one border router. HA says that you might be able to merge the Thread networks (bottom of this page) www.home-assistant.io/integrations/thread/ so if that is the case then you could take advantage of both.

    By minute 4, I was definitely feeling like Charlie Brown hearing the teacher, "Wah, wah, wah." How is any ordinary mortal supposed to be able to understand all this router, mesh, thread, etc. stuff? If our homes are going to be smart, these devices need to be a whole lot simpler to implement. So far, every switch or plug or device that I have requires its own dedicated app. That's crazy. If I had to use a "stove app" every time I boiled water or "microwave app" every time I heated up soup, I'd end up either cooking over a camp stove or eating out!

    I gave up and wrote off HA, as soon as I learned that they charge for a subscription to be able to connect to your house remotely. That, and you have to build it with every protocol that you want, on top of having to run 3rd party plugins for many of them.
    It was fun, and I liked having a more custom tailored integration. But it's just not there yet. At least not to the point of Vera LUA... And now that Vera/EZLO has committed suicide(I'm not paying for the rest of my life to remotely control my home), I'm stuck with ST. EVERYTHING seems functions much better in ST, and much more solid for me. No subscriptions, semi-customizable, and more of a "just works", has me sold with ST... Plus the price!!!
    I'll stay in touch with HA, but until they can offer a SIP implementation with no annual fee, they'll remain in others' homes.
    Thanks for the video though.... At least now we know!!!
