Some personal experience with the XM8 development: I remember the discussion in the mid to late 90s when the m551s went away from the 82d. I was in another XVIII Airborne Corps unit at the time. 551s had shown limited usefulness after being air dropped in Panama - I think something like 10 were dropped but only 7 or 8 survived the landing. And in desert storm the 551s didn’t do much once on the ground. It was no match for the T72, and -as we know- AirPower, Apaches, TOWs, and M1s handled the high intensity conflict. So the role of an airdroppable light tank in general was heavily debated. It is a matter of survivability and usefulness vs.needing to be able to parachute out of a C130. Too much armor or to big a gun (more than about 20 tons), and it can’t jump, so you need to land the c130. And if you must land, then you can also land a c17 which can carry an Abrams. Further, as the discussion went, there weren’t any mainstream scenarios where there would be Airborne operations without USAF owning the sky. So the Paratroopers were left with TOWs and other anti tank missiles that can parachute in and added USAF Tactical air controllers (TAC-Ps) with direct lines to attack aircraft. So the M8 is a light tank (mobile gun system actually) that can’t survive an RPG in its jump configuration (needs armor bolted on later) with a gun that really struggles to kill a T72 (Gaijin and Bo showed that in the vid). And the program was put on hold. In the next chapter we can talk about the M8s near resurrection in the 2000s during the great “wheels vs tracks” medium brigade debate (I was in combat development then). And how the USArmy instead chose the Stryker MGS. Be interested in the views of any current or former paratroopers out there.

Bo, just a word of advice, if you ever see a drive wheel at all on a T-72, T-64, T-80 hit right behind. The armor is seriously weak there. I have gotten penetrations at extreme angles on the sides and they pop easy. So when you were cornered by the two T-72s on american desert, just hit the first one in the side. You do great otherwise 😆😆
Plz Bo shoot through the side off the hull of T series tanks like the TURMS. Your APFSDS goes right through that and into the ammorack under the turret resulting in a oneshot. Even when they are highly angled, most APFSDS have good penetration at an angle. Going for lower plate at an angle will just kill the driver, and the turret cheeks are probably one of the most armored parts of that tank. Either go for the gun breech or the hull sides in that situation. Just some tips :)
