I saw a lot of parallels to my mom in Betty. My mom was a year younger than the "Betty" character and as her child being raised in the '60's, I sensed that many of my mom's struggles with individuality and finding her voice were like Betty's - but since I was too young, she never expressed them to me. I lost my mom to lung cancer just like Betty in the '70's when I was a teen. A part of me will always stay with this character, who echoes the mom who once raised and loved me.
I held my breath for the whole duration of this video, fighting the emotions of extreme sadness. What amazing casting. The music complimented everything too. Poor Betty, an Icon who represented a million wives and mothers of an era that has been perfectly encapsulated by this the genius series that Madmen is.
Elizabeth "Betty" Hofstadt Draper Francis (1932-1971): Wife, Mother, Imperfect Human Being, Model, Fashionista, Reader, Bilingual in English and Italian, Horsewoman, Junior League member, Political Wife, BA in Anthropology, Psychology Grad student, and excellent Marks Woman.
She was my favorite character. So pretty and almost fragile on the outside, and yet so tough and stoic on the inside; being stuck with a cheating thoughtless husband, bearing all 3 of his children and never complaining about it. She tried to make the best of her situation looking glorious and trying to put on a brave face and be supportive while he seemed to barely tolerate or acknowledge her. She never complained about her plight and stuck it out until it become even too unbearable for her, he practically gave a roadmap to the next guy or any guy who would even treat her with a little bit more respect; and when she found that guy; he was in clueless utterless belief. I really like her next husband and would have liked to have seen them have a longer life together.
She grew on me, it took a looong time though. One of the funniest, unexpected scenes, was the shotgun..lol. There were a lot of deaths that got to me on this show, but hers hit me the hardest. I thought she was tough, indestructible ... like we think our parents are, they will never die. The letter she wrote to her daughter hit home....it gave my eyes a workout.
January Jones was tailor-made for the role of Betty Draper. And kudos to her costumers. They couldn't have found a better model to showcase those period fashions. Obviously, her beauty is timeless, but those clothes fit her cool physical esthetics perfectly. Hair, makeup, manners, clothing......as if she jumped right off the pages of 1960's Vogue or Look Magazine.
She reminds me (as well as all other women on MM) of Helga G. Pataki: a complicated, sad, talented, and lively soul that often behaves unsympathetically but in a way that is real and that we can empathize with.
The show repeatedly says she’s a dead ringer for Grace Kelly and I can totally see it. January Jones really does look like her imo. She’s so beautiful and timeless. The hairstyling and fashion in the show really suited her as well.
Splendid, thank you. (Any woman, who so instinctively and immediately radiates joy and calm every time she sees her husband interacting good father to her children, has great value and is worthy of love and respect.
Yeah poor Betty. Treated like a commodity, then she thinks a guy really loves her, but he isn't really there because he's an alcoholic, then she meets another guy who really loves her, but then she dies.
My mother reminded me of Betty . Married during the same time . Kids . Husband screwing around . In the end she got terminal cancer and was gone in two months
Mine also… Born in 1931, married 1952, husband died from lung cancer in 1980, remarried in 1982. Mother died horribly from lung cancer in 2003. Her name was Betty Ocker and I am that "Mad Men" child...
Thank you Betty Draper for showing so much class in a time when it was simpler. In those times it seemed even the fashion, the music, the way a man did open a door or a woman’s chair. That era is timeless. The way my own parents talk about with a look of longing in their eyes. Which gives us all the feeling of bliss and a longing for those days and simpler times.
I straight away thought of Grace Kelly as I started watching her, and to me Grace was the most beautiful of all actresses, with Hedy Lamar a close second.
Betty is a perfect example, if you find a man who is self-fish, coward, and doesn't know how to love people, even you are a princess, you will eventually be turned into a maid.
Poor Betty. She would have been so happy as a jet-setting fashion model. Instead she did exactly what society expected. It didn't make her happy. She had no way of expressing or even identifying why she wasn't happy. Her life was a tragedy, yet there's still hope for her daughter.
I love Betty, uno de los mejores personajes de la serie que merecia mas protagonismo. La unica mujer a la que amo Don Draper sin saberlo y fue uno de los motivos de su infelicidad.
I love this show, however, what I don’t get it in season 3, when they went to Italy, they had wonderful time there and looked happy, but right after they came home, when Don got her a piece of jewelry, all the sudden, her face looked annoyed and from that moment, their marriage was over. But I just don’t understand that moment why she completely changed.
Her life was a tragedy, however, I liked her character in S1; I don’t like the way she treated Sally especially after her divorce with Don; and also in S 3, she doesn’t treated Sally as well as Don who is more understanding Sally’s upsetting with the new born. She is way more harsh than Don towards Sally.
What the tragedy of her story told me is that I need to deal with the question "how to avoid be with a man like Don?" And the answers I found after seeing the full series, are: 1- Believe in yourself, fight for yourself, fight for what you want. A job, a career. Man is unreliable. Low-self esteem will lock you into those bad relationships. If Betty could had a job, she would have much more confidence and security. 2- Meet more men. Date more men so you can compare, so you know who is best for you, who treat you the way you deserve. If Betty met her second husband before Don, she will totally have a different live.
I am stunned by all the "my favorite character" comments. I guess we were watching different shows. I can think of at least a half dozen characters I liked better and January Jones didn't have the acting chops the other cast members had.
January Jones... beautiful woman...mediocre actress. Betty could have been a much more complex character. Kiernan Shipka ended-up being a great actress, hence why Sally became as much of a character as she did.
@@MarkSmith-js2pu I thought she was great in that role. Very understated but deep under that cold, perfect veneer. She reflected the icy demeanor & iron backbone that was expected of women of her era and social station. A very complicated character but not really a likable one, simultaneously magnetic and repellent, and JJ nailed it. Reminds me a lot of my own mother, who was of Betty's generation.
joanne smith, I was born in 1954, I lived this life. Dad was a swashbuckler and as far as I know faithful. My mom was the beautiful mother of 5 and I was the oldest. She didn’t ever work outside the home and didn’t even learn to drive until she was 33. None of my friends and classmates had mothers who worked. All my friends loved her, I miss her, and so do they. Betts was one of the best characters of all time, the writers did a great job in showing how confining it was women of that time. Betts had a great role, and her kids and Don did love her. JJ was perfect.

That's a really beautiful thing for you to share, thank you.
Michael Barnhart I hope there really is a heaven and that you see her again in all her perfection. I hope the same for my mom and I.
Michael Barnhart beautiful comment. I’m sorry for your loss. ❤️
I understand. My Mother was so much like Betty. I laughed, cried, and smiled with great love and admiration when watching her.
So sorry about your mom.
January Jones was awesome as Betty...
@2z
Yes she was! My favorite character 😿
January jones as betty draper is one of the most underrated portrayal. She deserved emmy for this one
I cannot imagine another soul playing Betty Draper. January Jones IS Betty Draper🌹
Betty died when she was still beautiful, just like she would have wanted.

Mooky Blaylock Yep
Surviving Don Draper is a massive accomplishment in its own right. Hate all the people who hate on Betty, love her character.
To me she'll always be Birdy
Jessica Victoria Carrillo The worst bitch in the whole Mad Man. That's saying a lot...:)
Hunter - You are the only one:) Honestly, how can you love her??:))

Oh how I loved her, and I cried like she real when she passed. Still do.
Has there ever been a better character than this woman? I would have been faithful to her and loved her to her dying days
Thank you for the video. Betty was truly one of the best characters I've seen on a series. Bye, bye Birdie.

By birdie reference caused me to choke going back to the Ann Margaret scene
They kept her looking beautiful hair, nails and clothes.
Is anyone gonna mention that she's drop dead gorgeous!?
Meh, if you're into that white bread shiksa look. I'm not.

So many people I know hated Betty's character, it was Don who was the one to dislike. She was a victim of the time.

If everything was normal, nobody would be interested in knowing.
