I'm a Chicago native, living in Belize, Central America for the last 32 years. Back in the 80's when satellite tv was starting out down here, we were able to watch WGN (still can), our first glimpse of US television. Belizeans are overwhelmingly Cubs fans, which is evident as you walk the streets of any city or town here. Thanks to WGN, a whole Central American nation supports the Cubbies!!
So sad...The main reason there are so many Cubs fans nationwide is because of WGN. Thanks for the memories. You can catch it all on WGN...
Grew up in Schaumburg back in the 1980's. To this day I can't hear the song "Jump" by Van Halen and not think Holy Cow at least once during the song. Brought to by....Union 76, Budweiser, True Value and the Chicagoland Mcdnonald's restaurants. Thanks for all you have done for Chicago Cubs Baseball WGN, and this Bud's for you!
How about the Danley Garage World commercials? HFC? Commonwealth Edison?
You're correct though. The Union '76 commercials, starring "Murph", were as memorable as the action on the field some of those years.
Seeing Harry and Steve swap their cigar and beer...seemed so much simpler back then. End of an era.
Kansas City Royals fan here. I became a Cubs fan when cable television started and I would run home from school to watch a major league game on a school day. In KC we could all name the Royals and Cubs starters.
Just yesterday I was thinking, “Even though the Cubs didn’t win it all (again) this year, it was a season full of wonderful moments.” And that’s the point, isn’t it? To enjoy the wonderful moments in every day in every year of life.
God, I love baseball.
Being from central Illinois, WGN made me the Cubs fan that I am today. Racing home after school to listen to Harry and Steve call games was the highlight of my day.
I’m only 16 but my dad got me into cubs baseball all the way in Oklahoma by watching the games when they were still on WGN America, thank you WGN for everything you have done to make me bleed cubby blue, you will be missed
So many great announcers, players, and moments! WGN will be missed in this tycoon money loving age we have come to now.
I heartily agree with you, Austin - it is truly my belief that when the Cubs games were telecast on WGN Television, the game was much humbler and those involved were as good friends of ours.
I grew up in Atlanta in the 90’s and watched the Braves religiously. But man I loved watching the Cubs during the day when I was out of school during summer. Became a pretty good fan of such an historic team, whose fans were there no matter win or lose, in the greatest ballpark in baseball.
when my dad was growing up he could only watch Cubs on WGN or Braves on TBS. He chose to watch the Cubs and raised me as a Cubs fan. Will miss watching y’all here games with my dad ❤️
When cable came to New Orleans back in August 1983, the second channel I turned on was WGN to see what was going on in the city where my grandmother lived. Not only I watched Cubs games but also Bulls games during The Jordan era & Blackhawks. I couldn't imagine 31 years later I would moved to Chicago to watched Cubs games in person at Wrigley and witnessed 3 Blackhawks Championships & The Cubs winning the World Series. I'm so sorry WGN & The Cubs are breaking up after all these years. Thanks for the memories WGN.
WGN is the reason why I'm a Cubs fan.
A lot of people can say the same thing, it's why there's so many Cubs fans across the whole country.
@@TheClawNinja exactly. Superstation for a team that never won during their tenure. Ironic how one corporation can keep a team from winning. Althewhile doing so on purpose. Look at Harrys son in Atlanta. Ted Turners superstations tbs and tnt. His braves won the division 14yrs in a row. Then theres the olympics in atl and the bombing. Capitalism is key to freedom but we all must lookout for the corruption.
Yep. I live in "Reds country" but for so long I'd remember coming home from school and turning on the Cubs game on WGN which is how I became a fan.
@FreddieTheTank Engine From airing Chicago Bulls BASKETBALL plus reruns of saved by the Bell
Thank you Chicago Cubs for taking my cubbies from channel 9 WGN. It won’t ever be the same 😭
as a 54 year old die hard Cub fan I remember alot of the good times and the bad times as well I remember the summers spent waiting for my cousin/big brother to come home from work and watching LEAD OFF MAN then THE CUBS GAME & THE TENTH INNING SHOW after to pass time THANK YOU WGN FOR SUCH GREAT MEMORIES ANOTHER CHAPTER IN MY LIFE !!
I've been a witness to the two greatest announcers of all time... Marty Brennaman and Harry Caray... I am truly blessed!!! RIP Harry 💔😢 🙏
Thank you WGN. I'm a Cubs fan because of your cable presence. (Bozo was pretty good too)
Miss them sooo much. There will never be more wonderful broadcasts than WGN put on. So sorry they gave up on loyal fans.
Most iconic network to broadcast baseball in the most iconic baseball stadium.
For a Cub fan of my age (34) the rest of these are good, but the singular indellible moment of the Cubs on WGN for me is Chip on May 6, 1998.
Here comes the hook is one of the most iconic calls in baseball history.
The Andre Dawson homerun in this video was my first Cubs game. I was almost 7 years old at the time.
Im in Toledo Ohio, and grew up watching the cubbies on WGN. Thanks for all the memories! I will never forget the 20 k strikeout game by Wood, with Chip Carey calling the game! Much love from this Cub fan. WGN will be missed!
Now you need to come to Wrigley and make new memories
I remember the summers in Columbus Georgia visiting my late grandparents and my grandfather would watch both the cubs on wgn Chicago and Braves baseball on turner
I didn't realize they were leaving WGN, been watching games on there since I was a kid.
I started watching the Cubs in 1969. During the school year I'd run home and usually catch the 5th inning or so and finish watching the Game. Loved Jack Brickhouse in those days. Back then you only needed one person in the booth, whereas today ESPN has three in a booth and two more on the field and it's more about them rather than the game. When I moved to Texas in the early 80's I would only take the cable company that had WGN. I especially loved watching WGN News in the winter just to see how frigid it was in Chicago while I still wore shorts in Texas. But for me WGN and the Chicago Cubs were synonymous. Sad to see they won't be showing ballgames anymore.
Sad to see the WGN era end but was great seeing in my opinion the best announcer the Cubs had Jack Brickhouse ran from school to catch the last few outs
My childhood; the super station one of the main reasons for Cubs fans from coast to coast. We'll miss ya WGN. Channel 9
Even though the Cubs aren't in the playoffs this season, I'm still going to be a Cubs fan no matter what!!! Through good times and bad times!!! I love the cubs!!! I love the Chicago Bulls as well!!!
Wgn will never die, it will always be synonymous with the cubbies, just like harry...so many great childhood memories
WGN was my baseball 101. I learned everything from Brickhouse to Harry To Stone. Thanks for the memories!!
Thanks WGN for all the coverage through the years!!
I remember many times watching Chicago Cubs baseball on WGN many times with my late grandfather in Columbus Georgia from the lead off man pre game show to the post game show they showed Chicago White Sox baseball You can put on the board yes ken the hawk harlenson home run call
Such great memories as a child watching Cubs games in the 80s. The cable system in my town didn't have WGN on it but the one at my grandparents house a few towns over did and so I would always look forward to going over there so I could watch the Cubs in the afternoon during the summer. I still watch old games on RUclips
I grew up on the Cubs on WGN ever since my parents got cable TV in our house in 1983. It's going to be weird to see WGN not associated with the Cubs anymore.
I will ALWAYS remember watching the Cubs on WGN, ESPECIALLY the 1984 season when they won the National League East. HAPPY TIMES!!!
We will miss you WGN. Thank you for a long and fruitful relationship. See you around
Man seeing the last WGN game yesterday, I felt that the cubs just wanted to win just for WGN my dad has been watching the cubs on WGN for over 50 years so by the cubs winning 8-2 against St. Louis that’s crazy.
More cubs on wgn for 2020
I WAS 7 YEARS OLD. HAD THE CHICKEN POCKS, HOME FROM SCHOOL FOR TWO WEEKS IN APRIL-MAY WGN, CUBS , FAN EVER SINCE THANKS WGN
One of my favorite WGN moments was in the first season I watched Cubs baseball, 1972 when I was seven. It was Milt Pappas perfect game (and it was a perfect game despite what Froemming says).
In the ninth inning there was a looper in short left center. Billy Williams had it all the way if fielder Bill North couldn't get there, but Channel 9 director Arne Harris did a great job of adding to the drama. He cut to a tight shot of North just as he slipped and made it look like Williams came out of nowhere to save the perfect game.
I would later work in radio/TV for fifteen years and that shot is still one of my all-time favorites.
WGN is the main reason for the start of the National Cubs Fan Base. Was awesome while it lasted.
I’m gonna miss that WGN theme song, I hate how some Cubs traditions like the outside bullpen mounds and now WGN are being taken away. I’ll feel especially bad for fans across the country, we always have so many fans in every road game thanks to WGN
Jack Brickhouse , Harry Carey , Tom Brennamen and Steve Stone doing Bow Tie Tuesday . Chip Carey , Hawk Dawson , Rhino , Sammy Sosa ............WGN was the main reason for me to get cable TV .
I remember watching all the cubs games on wgn as a child years ago.
Man I miss the Cubs on WGN and love WGN too.
Love the mailman clicking his heals like Ron Santo after coming up with Dawson’s home run.
Thanks 4 ALL the memories...............
Go Cubbies
Go cubs go
I love cubs⚾️⚾️
If it wasn’t for wgn, I probably would’ve been a braves fan. Thank you wgn
Thank you for the fond memories of Cubs Baseball, WGN! Thank you!
I'll miss WGN Cubs games. If I have to pay extra for the Cubs Marquee network I guess I won't be watching the Cubs next year
Reddit my dude
Summers will never be the same...the best of times when baseball was free for every fan. #WGN
Go Cubs! Thanks for WGN broadcasting memories for a lifetime!
Thank You Wgn!
This got me more emotional than I thought it would.
This will be sad
I like the cubs
bittersweet moment for sure. thankful all the moments WGN brought us, sad that it's ending. but looking forward to all the new content the new network will bring as well.
What a shame! I, for one, shall miss you seeing the Cubs on WGN... 😪
WGN Chicago 1948-2019 WGN America 1978-2014
You will be missed old friend, until we meet again. :)
I'd knew Milo Hamilton. He was the Houston Astros broadcaster. Holy Toledo!!!!
Gave me goosebumps 🥺
I am so sad. I grew up watching WGN, I can't believe it is over. We need to win the world series for WGN next year. GO CUBBIES!
So honoured to be from the same home town as Jack Brickhouse.
End of an era
😢
Thank you for the memories
Win World Series for them next year
So glad to have enjoyed WGN's Cubs broadcasts especially on triple digit temps & humidity while melting on ma's plastic couch with no air conditioning in the summer, I am watching da Cubs with Jack Brickhouse broadcasting. It was basically Cubs or 'soaps' & our place was drama city. You are a fond part of my childhood and will be a fond memory! Lost era indeed!
How do you do a tribute without Harry going "CUBS WIN CUBS WIN CUBS WIN CUBS WIN!"
Or his "It might be, it could be, it is a homerun"
FAREWELL CHICAGO CUBS BASEBALL ON WGN SPORTS WGN-TV

FAREWELL CHICAGO CUBS BASEBALL ON WGN SPORTS WGN-TV 1948-2019
I am a WGN baby.
The first time I heard about WGN was from the Max Headroom broadcast hack
In 2007, the Braves left TBS, and now 12 years later, the Cubs are leaving WGN.
Not to mention for MLB fans mainly of the Baby Boomer and Gen X eras, when the Weekend Game of the week ended on NBC in Sept. 1989 as another "sad" end to a huge broadcasting in MLB History also occurred. I don't count the 5-6 years in the Mid/Late 1990's NBC regained baseball coverage. By then it was mainly only as a secondary TV partner to late season and Playoff/couple of World Series to ESPN and later (since 1996 till now in the early 2020's)Fox. Sad to see both the Cubs and certain degree the White Sox leave WGN. Remember watching Cubs and some White Sox on digital cable on WGN in the 1990's and early 2000's. Sad to see this ending.
Yeah, WGN used to be great. Watched countless Cubs Games, Bulls, Sox, Sports with Dan, and weather with Skilling. Now I sit in KC and all “WGN America” has is back to back to back to back episodes of “Cops”. Power sessions, 20 or more, “Last Man Standing”, “MASH”, “ Married with Children”. No sports, No news, No Blackhawks. Nothing. Haven’t watched WGN “America” for years. Like Sears, or Marshall Field, the ruining of a Chicago icon. 😖
Bittersweet...
Very sad day
Did they win their first broadcast game on 4-16-48?
who is gonna do the games next year then?
What's the name of that music
who's doing the cubs games now?
Let's beat the Cardinals tonight 9/27/19 Cubbies ❤️
Does anyone know why this happened?
Greedy owners.
Can Imwe have a ❤ emoji for this please?
Sorry for dumb question as I am not living in Chicago? Will this new Cubs Marquee TV Station be the exclusive home for all Cubs games starting in 2020 (not counting games from Fox/FS1, ESPN or TBS)? Or will a handful of games be shown on WGN or any local Chicago stations free over the air? In NYC as most of you are aware mainly due to Political pressure a handful of Met and Yankees games (around 15-20 games a piece)are shown on WPIX. Or in Philly, a few Phillies games are shown on the NBC Philadelphia affiliate WCAU-TV.
JOE SHOULD STAY FOR 2 MORE YEARS , REAL FANS KNOW THIS .
PLAYERS NEED TO STAND UP AND SPEAK OUT . ITS NOT EASY BEING A COACH OR PLAYER BUT IF YOU HAVE A PLAYER WHO ALWAYS WANT TO HIT A HOMER WE WILL NEVR MAKE IT TO ANOTHER WORLD SERIES .
ITS NOT JOE FAULT DO YOU KNOW WHY JOE JS THW BEST HE LOVES THE GAME ,HES NOT THIER FOR THE CHECK ONLY
I grew up watching them on WGN. So where are we supposed to watch now? I sure don't have money for cable. Ridiculous, screwing over long time fans like this.
MLB.tv? if you have T-Mobile they give you the season for free
Baseball today is a joke of a game compared to my era of the 70's and 80's. All HR's and SO's is so boring. And all these computer generated shifts have done away with singles hitters. Sac flies, bunting are lost arts. Basically the game isnt fun anymore. Oh, but the owners are makin money so its all good.
Hey
W
Yeah this is stupid. By no longer having any cubs games on WGN. You split the fan base even more. All cause you want more money, and guess what it’s going to backfire.
