  • With much love and respect for Jaco and his talent, I tell of "The Incident" that made me turn my back on the man, and how I have paid the price.

That was a terrible experience you had with a Jaco perfomance.Really glad you were able to come around and realize the genuis of his playing and also his composition. There have only been a few that burned hot like he did and left such an indelible mark on jazz.Bird,Trane,Wes and Jaco all died before reaching 50 but opened up a new paths that still influence players today.

I knew a bass player that was older than me. Who I looked up to said he saw Jaco picking up change in the park in Grenich village. And it really got me down you know cause he was my hero. But now as i get older. And you realize that mental health issues and alcoholism and drug addiction. All take a toll on people in different ways. Doesn't take away from the genius that he was.

This is true. In my struggles to complete my degree I have lost some of my humility and humanity. Unfortunately like James Brown said, " I paid the cost to be a boss".

Jaco’s life was tragic. He suffered from Bipolar Disorder which eventually brought about his death.

OMG!!!!! I'm not sure if this was the same concert, but my first time seeing Jaco was at the Playboy Jazz Festival in the late 70s or early 80s and I was so excited!!! "WOW! I'm going to see Jaco live in concert", I thought to myself. I believe he was playing with his band on a rotating stage and he started acting very strange. After about 10 minutes, the stage began rotating while he was still playing and that was it! I was extremely angry and disappointed and this ruined the rest of the day for me. Some years afterward, I found out that he was in an altercation outside of a bar in Florida, was severely beaten, and died as a result of his injuries. After I found that he had issues with alcohol and drugs, I was mad at myself for being angry and disappointed because of his behavior at that concert and I was also sad. Regardless of Jaco's personal issues, his genius and innovations on the electric bass are unparalleled and his music and influence are unforgettable and undeniable.

This must have been during the 1984 PJF..it's been documented in the book Bill Milkowski wrote about him..tragic event for sure..Jaco really needed some help by then..too bad you didn't have the chance to see him during his better days..I missed him with Weather Report (did see them with Victor however) but did see some gigs just as he had formed his WOM unit..spectacular..

I saw him with Weather Report in 1978 and with Joni the next year. We had no idea what he would come to so soon after.

Poor Jaco. He had a terrible mental illness. He got dropped by Warner Bros and I think he was trying to get back in Weather Report. Joe probably gave him the cold shoulder. He was under a lot of pressure because he had 4 kids, a wife and an ex-wife to support.

No, he never tried to re-join Weather Report. He wanted to grow as a musician and never looked back.

By the time he had that stack set up , he had gone beyond his bipolar issues, into Cocane and drinking etc ..
He needed someone to wring him in, but no one was making any effort to handle him in his downward spiral ..
That's why he ended up , like he did ..

I mean, that bouncer DID choose violence though. A lot of people seem to forget that.
