The British Council Film Collection is an archive of more than 120 short documentary films made by the British Council during the 1940s designed to show the world how Britain lived, worked and played. Preserved by the BFI National Film Archive and digitised by means of a generous donation by Google, the films are now yours to view, to download and to play with for the first time.
In the run up to the 1945 general election, the film focuses on the electoral race of one of the 640 local constituencies in Britain, that of Kettering in Northamptonshire.
Hoping to be elected as MP for the 74,000 strong population residing in the area is the Labour representative Gilbert Mitchison, Conservative John Profumo and Independent Christian standee John Dempsey.
From canvassing votes and sending out ballot papers to servicemen overseas, to battling a counterproductive voting apathy, the whole process is captured until the moment when the successful candidate is announced and Kettering is appointed a new leader.
The film is designed to showcase the successful democratic process in place in British society, a way of being that renounces fascistic rule and ensures that every individual member in a larger national community has their voice heard.
A lot of attention is paid to the 'politically impartial' role of the press, hammering home the 'coming good' of the supposedly free press in Britain.

Obviously no bias in political candidates propriety, Cough ! but Christine Keeler wasn't in circulation as a born again liberation celebrity until 1963. Then we had a Labour majority who won support of the Government and in 1946/7 they declared a National Health Service. Then we all lived happily ever after till 2015.
Keeler would have been 3 at the time shown here, while Profumo was running for re-election...

Members of the armed forces defeated Churchill because they disliked him immensely (according to author Edmund Wilson). The Government promised " Homes for Heroes" after WW I. They never delivered on that promise, and in 1945, the chicken came home to roost.
How refreshing to see politicians being shyly stilted on camera. Dick Mitchison, of course, won very solidly with a majority of 6400, dolding until 1964.

Astonishing Valerie Hobson married him in the first place and stood by him in the second.
They didn't get married until 1954 by which time he was MP for Stratford upon Avon and was rising rapidly up through the Conservative Party ranks as a well connected and well regarded politician. The standing by him part is probably due to their having an 8 yo son at the time.
Best quote I heard about all this was from Christine Keeler... she said she was quitting politics because she had had a bellyful of the Tory Party...!!

Local council elections do not have deposits. For parliamentary elections, the lost deposit (currently 500 pounds) goes to the Treasury’s Consolidated Fund (CF). The CF was first set up in 1787 as ‘one fund into which shall flow
every stream of public revenue and from which shall come the supply for every
service’. It's basically a bank account for the government at the Bank of England.
