Keokuk is a sad and dying rural town in extreme south-eastern Iowa. Keokuk needs to find a way to stop residents from continuing to move elsewhere before it's too late.

I agree I am also from Keokuk and yes it is run down in parts but there are some beautiful areas as well. I miss what it was when I was younger. I really wish we could breath some life back into it again.I live in Arkansas now but go back at least once a year. Recently saw an old childhood home there burn down and it broke my heart. I will always cherish the memories I made there.

I live 45 minutes from Keokuk and enjoy going there. You missed showing the waterfront with the George M. Verity and the only hydro dam on the Mississippi and the fantastic depot. Even Marion Morrison (a/k/a John Wayne) went to elementary school there. You drove by the Pilot Grove Savings Bank which is located where Mark Twain's brother had his print shop. Many of the early immigrants to Iowa came through Keokuk as it was the furthest north you could go without encountering the Des Moines Rapids. The Keokuk National Cemetery is beautiful and we have chosen it to be our resting place.

Our parents took us to the park there where the statue of Chief Keokuk is. It was so well kept and beautiful with steps that led you down by the river. We had so many family picnics there. This was back in the fifties when there were beautiful parks everywhere. We lived in a small little old town nearby in Ill. Called Elvaston. So many happy memories!

I lived in Keokuk in 1970-1973. We had a brand new house on the north side of town where there were new houses for several blocks recently built in the '60's. I went back for the first time about 10 years ago, and the streets that were new 50 years ago have not been repaired since. I was there again a few weeks ago, and now its even worse . Sad to see my where i lived with such fond memories just falling apart !

If I had time when I went through Keokuk, I liked to stop at the licks and see if a river tow was ready to lock through. The difference in pool elevation is around fourty feet, the biggest drip on the Mississippi. The voat really fallls or raises, depending on which direction it is headed.

Thank you for sharing this video with us.
Your video was far more positive sounding about Keokuk, than was the video I saw earlier. While I never resided in Keokuk, I have visited it a few times in the 1960's. Like many towns of its size around America, I understand that Keokuk is not what it once was. In 1968, my last visit to Keokuk, US 218 (Main Street) was full of flourishing businesses, with no / few empty storefronts if any, with a decent array of places for the family to eat at, especially in 1968 when there weren't as many chain restaurants as there are today. After I was taken for a tour of Keokuk that year, I recalled only one home on all its shade-tree covered streets that was dilapidated and in disarray.
If I ever need someone to do a video of something, like a promo of a small city or town, I'd pick you over that other guy - he was really negative and hopeless sounding, while you sound far more "middle of the road," and less offensive to those who still have cherished memories and a love for any town that they grew up in.

My family and I have been living here about 15 years now. We moved in 2008. Hard to believe it's been that long. I know it's not perfect, but I honestly love living here. It's comfortable, and there's enough stores for me to be able to get what I need without having to travel far. (I moved from Bushnell, Illinois, where we had one grocery store and a bunch of gas stations, and that was about it.) We lived up near Rand Park and Grand Avenue. Used to go down to the park and play a lot. As we got older, I would walk through the park listening to music. Still do. I'm rambling on, but there's so many beautiful sights here, being along the Mississippi river, and I honestly wouldn't trade it for anything.

I am proud to have grown up close to Keokuk. It's a friendly town. Neighbors help each other. It is suffering what other towns are suffering from, no jobs with higher salaries. Keoku has lost a lot of industry due to companies being purchased by overseas investors and being moved to another city or country. Keokuk's largest employer is a corn processing plant that makes base products for sweeteners and starch. It is owned by a French company. All small towns suffer. You could have gone down Grand Avenue and saw beautiful homes at near mansion level. You chose not to. It seemed that you wanted to only show the less property valued area of the city. Maybe you will come back some day with a better map and find the heart of the city with

I learned about Keokuk a week ago when I saw, on YT, there is a webcam at the lock and dam which I've been watching. When the camera panned I saw some beautiful Victorian homes nearby so I did a further search via Google maps and saw so many gorgeous homes and a few of them are on the market for a very reasonable price when they'd go for twice or three times that elsewhere. Beautiful woodwork inside these homes that are over 100 years old.

Fond memories of Keokuk. My step grandparents owned a bookstore/stationary/office supply store on Main St. up until around 1960's...Rollins and Company, I believe. Rand Park, watching the Mississippi River and its traffic, and general small town charm is what I remember. Last visited about 2006. Always though this was the smartest place to live in that general area, as it sits higher above the Mississippi River and isn't subject to overflowing and flooding nearly as much as the Illinois side.

    • @ChrisHarden
      @ChrisHarden  3 года назад +4

What I would say to that, is that sure, most of the residential neighborhood areas of Detroit look like the apocalypse, but those neighborhoods are surrounded by a region that offers a great job market along with big city amenities. Downtown Detroit is full of life and so are the Detroit suburbs.
I worry about Keokuk's future and other simular towns because they don't have the benefits of being surrounded by other prosperous communities. Unlike Detroit, Keokuk and other failing small rural towns don't have much that will attract new companies into town. The only way for these small rural towns to turn around their economic downward spiral is to bring in new jobs, and that's proven to be quite the challenge for places like Keokuk.

Pretty nice places in SE Asia and in Southern Italy.... I would not say that is bottom of the barrel. We'll see if things change for the better when that POS Trudeau Socialist gets knocked out.

Did you see the gas prices displayed on the flashing sign? $1.89. I live 30 mins from there and Trump gas prices were very nice. Go Brandon.

Did you actually talk to someone from Keokuk? It's pronounced Kee-o-kuck, not Kee-o-cook. Do your homework.

Not like civic pride is a high point, I live there for most of my life and I felt ashamed, still do.

The jobs that were in Keokuk left taking income with them. What is really happening is low life drug users and sellers have invaded into Keokuk. Criminal reports used to consist of car keying and some vandalism. Now, because of a small police force, these criminals can come, do their dirt and leave. Very easy to escape to Missouri or Illinois when you only have to cross a bridge
