  • There is nearly R50 billion of funds that belong to almost 5 million people in Southern Africa in unpaid pensions and this amount does not include UIF or other forms of unpaid insurance policies. This is according to civil society group Open Secrets, and the organisation says many pensioners and their families continue to suffer without the pension benefits owed to them, while fund administrators, asset managers, and other financial actors rake in fees and profit from the funds.
Michael Marchant is the Head of Investigations at Open Secrets, he joins us for more on this

It's so unfair that we are forced to be part of a provident fund.
We have no choice on how and where to invest our own hard earned monies.
The entire process just makes the fund wealthier.

Is very sad indeed that information of beneficiaries was not properly captured. The sending of people from pillar to post should be adressed even though i dont have suggestion that need to be cracked.Thanx for the information will share.Wish SABC could break it into "small piecies"for all Radio stations as well🙏

It wasn't a requirement back in the day for businesses/public companies to keep shareholder data and/or records. Many companies/funds are sitting with money that is owed to people with no details..

Sukhina GEPF should pay back the monies they just cut to the widows without notifying the month end of September they mustn’t act like criminals these monies are taxed when you get your lumpsum and when you qualify for that widow/widower monthly benefit it’s also taxed now we are paid less because they say we haven’t been taxed how can they tax a person something like 3000 and these monies are committed now we are traumatised can someone tell GEPF to refund our monies back please cause I view this as a criminal acts thanks

All that money is earning huge interest for someone that is not really the beneficiary. That’s why they make it impossible for people to claim.

If they haven't made enough effort to find people that are owed funds. Is it claimed by the government after the due date?

I think I'm right sir, because when I'm deceased. A retainer fee would be needed to claim my money if I don't have a will drawn up. By a family member or someone with the exact same name and so forth...

They could separate the different sectors. Put mining alone, metal alone, small businesses alone. Then they won't have to hey have to send people from pillar to post

Lost me when he started to blame Jan van Riebeeck again. Would have been so much more powerful if he kept politics out of it.
