You can buy approx three Yongnuo 600RT for the price of one Canon 600RT. If one of your Youngnuo 600RT fails your still up 300 plus dollars.

I have five of these and they have been reliable for the last 3 years. Recently the catches on one battery door gave out and I needed to replace it. At a cost of $13 for the door I bought two. A youtube video showed me how to change the door. The video was 30 seconds, and it took me 30 seconds to perform the switch. I am a big fan.

Hi Toby .... I would like to let you know that the Youngnuo speed lights have now service here in USA and offices in US... so the hindrance of servicing the YN speed lights have been taken care of.
I have 9 of the YN 560-3 and 3 TTLs 465's with their ttl transmitters and ttl receivers for 2 years of daily use ... flawless in every environment I've done... i am a location photographer so i do give them a run for their money every day.

I shot a wedding last week using the Canon 600EX-RT II and the Yongnuo YN600EX-RT II. Flawless performance from both, although I did notice the same faster recycle time on the YN. However, it doesn't wake up as fast. You have to remember to press the shutter release halfway first and wait for a second. You're good to go after that.
The YN-E3-RT controller is a must have if you own either one or both of the flashes. I've used it on many shoots, and I'm able to keep things moving rather than stop several times to adjust the power output.
    Good video!

Fair enough; you're a pro and have gotten good use out of them. My experience differs. I've tried one on a high volume shoot. It got very hot and then failed until it cooled down again.... Out comes the Canon.... No dramas there!!!

I purchased the Yongnuo YN600EX-RT II and YN-E3-RT trigger unit. I love the YN600EX-RT II because it is compatible with the TTL on my Canon 5D Mk IV but I also do manual photography. You I I just can't beat Yongnuo price vs. Canon version. The door where the battery is installed on the flash is much better than the Canon version. I went ahead and purchased another YN600EX-RT II. Hopefully the second order does not come out as a lemon like most of the few negative reviews from Amazon. I also have no problem with wheel selector which I kinda like. You just have to get use to it.

I have had to replace the doors in my 600 RT's and to do that you have to order from China so be prepared for a little bit of a wait. Not sure why there is no place in the US that stocks them ... at least that I can find. The other major problem I have with them is when shooting event photography (using a Rogue Flash Bender ... flash in vertical position) that the flash heats up and shuts down. The Canon 580EXII that I have will keep on shooting without this problem but ... it isn't as bright at the Yongnuo 600-RT. I do love the price and may be getting another soon.

I use the Yongnuo with Yognuo triggers. I've always been satisfied with them. I don't do a ton of flash photography but I do some. So, I could never justify the price of the Canons. The Yonguno's I've had for like 5 years, still work good.

I have Yongnuo's as well, but to be fair, Canon pays all of the research and development costs, marketing, for the original product. Ironic, because originally Japanese camera companies copied American models and essentially did the same thing as what Yongnuo is doing. lol

I've been using Yongnuo units alongside one Canon unit for two wedding seasons, and they are going strong. They work virtually identically to the Canon. Performed firmware updates no problem. The speaker here talks about possible hassles for repairs. At only $120 each, I wouldn't imagine repairs are exactly practical. Most flash issues involve breakage rather than malfunction, and anything that breaks a Yongnuo (such as a very hard drop) is likely going to break the Canon, too. With this in mind, and at 1/4 the price, the Yongnuo is, to me, actually preferable from an economic standpoint. (I've shot more than 400 weddings, and have had two flashes break during that time. One was a Canon 550 EX, and the other an old Sunpak grip-style model. The Canon was already years old and thoroughly out of warranty, and was, accordingly, a total loss.) Finally, as the speaker said, I actually prefer the stronger and more effective AF assist offered by the Yongnuo better than the Canon. Ten years ago and further, OEM flash units represented the best game in town. Today, that's not necessarily the case, and certainly not from a standpoint of value. Yongnuo gets my vote.

I also have both flashes and did some testing. One important result I would add to the review here: The Yongnuo produces about 1 stop less light (at least on my model)!
And: I would say the build quality is really not comparable to Canon ... but yes, it is very inexpensive and you can easily get 2 for the price of one to make up for the flash power diff ;)

    • @photorectoby

+Christof Prenninger Interesting. I have not seen the differences in light in my comparisons but it doesn't surprise me - quality control is not a strength of of YN.

    Good video Toby.
What do you think about the ethics of these flashes? I have a hard time purchasing products which basically are a exact clone of Canons product. Most likely being sold significantly cheaper, since they did not have to fund the R&D, or provide future customer support?
Might be a interesting discussion for a future live show.

My main gripe about my YN600RT is the thin foot, which causes a sloppy fit in the hotshoe.
Because of this, I wouldn't use it on-camera, but have no problem using it on a lightstand.

Nice review Toby. The canon flashes have seriously been overpriced for years... a money making idea from canon to easily cash in on people who bought canon cameras and are not informed of better / cheaper alternatives like the yongnuos
Also u mention warranty and repair maybe a hassle with yongnuo... who cares when u can buy 2 more to replace the broken one and still haven't spent as much as buying 1 canon flash.
I have used canon and yongnuo and actually prefer the yongnuos in the past as they could sense other flashes going off and fire (cabins never even had this basic function) :)

Have you had any problems/uncomfort when rotating hot shoe mounted YN flashes? Some say that it's pain because lack of lock buttons requires much more force to rotate the flash unit and hot shoe mount is not tight enough.

    • @andrewgreig1197
      @andrewgreig1197 5 лет назад

Yes it works really well. The camera thinks it has the genuine article in the shoe. You can even use the camera to set the flashes. As an aside , my JinBei 610 studio strobes have a controller for each of Canon, Nikon, Sony and Fuji. My JinBei controller fires my Yong Nuos believing them to be Canon Speedlites. This gives me a lot more fire power at weddings.

ATG/Yongnuo YN600EX-RT II can do more features than Canon's:

I too bought a number of the Yongnuo, (4 in all) hoping to be able to use them regularly. But unfortunately right from the beginning, 2 of them suffered from over heating, in one of them almost immediately, and I was not using it heavily. Two others seemed to go through the batteries very quickly, and again on another 2 if leaving the batteries in the flash, when I would go to use the flash the next time, sometimes only a few days latter, the batteries would show no charge. I find them very unreliable. And unfortunately have not no luck in attempting to deal with the company. I was too early in purchasing them directly from China, should have purchased them from Amazon for easy return. Very disappointed.
