Gary Player was one of the truly great players, but he should not mix arrogance with a lack of information. Chambers Bay is a very playable course for the average golfer -- play from the right tees and you have a fair opportunity to play to your handicap. Also, it is a big property but relatively little is irrigated and the course uses less water than most courses.

Stephen Hanley He stated that the U.S. open course is designed in such a way that it doesn't lend itself to amateur enjoyment, as even pros are prone to struggle with it. Amateurs, who are the financial lifeblood of the sport, can't typically enjoy a course like this (if they like recording somewhat decent scores, that is) without devoting an obscene amount of time to it, and other aspects of their lives may suffer as a result. I can't find anything wrong with this bit of reasoning, personally, but it's just his opinion. I don't see how Mr. Player stating his opinion makes him arrogant. As for the water thing, trained scientists and experts who devote 40+ hrs a week to the subject all warn us to curtail our consumption, and yet you seem to know better. Filters cost money. The parts of earth most vulnerable to water shortages don't have money for filters. They don't even have enough money to dig a well in their own town. If you have the solution, for God's sake please share it with the rest of us. Otherwise, putting your "don't worry about it" statements or par with experts' opinions comes off as arrogant to me.

However i would rather be nowhere else than on a links in the sunshine, a la Chambers Bay. It was a beauty of a tournament. Read up qualified science to see facts on water. Naturally 1000 miles inland scarcity becomes a reality, however households choose to live there, Chambers Bay has a very short trip to the ocean.

Lucky enough to have played there multiple times since it's opening (when the green fees was somewhat reasonable), Chamber's Bay (like other links courses) requires you to be equipped with a different game (e.g., low, penetrating shots against the wind, ability to roll the ball onto the green, etc.). There are plenty of public, country courses which are shorter, easier and cheaper which golfers can choose - you don't buy a Porsche expecting a cushy ride to the supermarket 🙂 Yes, there are a few "DEEP" bunkers which I thought was unfair but in general, I think the course (from "non-professional tees"), plays well. However, not sure this is not worth a $300 a round for non-residents.
true and i agree with your whole point....but the greens were a bit sketchy. i mean the fact Dustin 3 putted for the tournament from 8 feet shows how much the greens exhausted the players
I was at this US Open and it was terrible for the fans. All fairways were roped off so that fans couldn't watch from any place other than the grandstands. The tee boxes were extremely crowded. Not good for the fans.
Chambers is of terrible design .. the conditions of the greens was well beneath some public links.... new gimmick course nouveau links style -- quite honestly links style courses all tend to be a bit boring ... as far as length ... i play a 7100 yard track that most pros could not par... if you want to see golf courses -- come east young man -- Merion Pine Valley and oh yeah Augusta
the course .. in time with work may come to be a great course -- too young and crude to host a major Chambers yielded a number of sub par-ers As far as length and scoring -- remember modest aged Merion held to even par quite capably .. too many of the "modern courses" are gimmicky .. water randomly located.. wastes - 17 @ The Players is a quite old hat example .. juiced balls and game improvement sticks 350 yard drives -- a different game than the one when Fat Jack began a run of majors

if you don't like it, find another course! There are plenty of amateurs who like and willing to pay to play at Chambers.

I drove the ball about 300 yds on my drives today and my card is still full of Bogey 5s.
