This will be interesting considering she wrote graffiti in her teens and since then has written 2 novels and 1 poetry book. I’ve heard her say in interviews that she’s not as connected to the person/poet she was when she wrote graffiti

I use to write graffiti, I wrote a poem in her coments called Racked ( i doubt she ever racked to do graff tho) i use to do graffiti, i still do but i used to too, so I for example am a writer if you did it in your teens, youre a toy, especially braggin about it and if you jus use to write graffiti. toy poet, cute plush toy tho

She’s deleted a lot of her old content since she wrote Graffiti. I connected to her poetry a lot when I was 19-21 and it’s been cool to see how she’s evolved as a writer

"i do not like the feeling" was one of my favourite poems when i was younger - it really evoked, for me, the feeling of pining after someone, and the heartache that comes with caring for someone who doesn't return the feeling/who you can't be with for whatever reason.

I love Savannah, I’ve followed her on RUclips for a while and I think she’s absolutely a writer who just happens to do RUclips and social media. Her newest collection Sweetdark from 2020 is one of my favorite poetry books ever, and her debut novel The Truth About Keeping Secrets was beautiful.
As a person who has been doing her "escapril" Instagram challenge for the 3 years it has been going on (and planning to do the same this year) and just bought her notebook, I am very interested in this video. I don't read her poetry, but just the thought and time she puts into the challenge tells me she cares and loves poetry, because she gains nothing from the challenge and she shares other people's work in it. So by that logic, she's not "just another RUclipsr poet". In fact I didn't know she did RUclips, I thought she was a poet with an Instagram.

I love Rachel’s poetry vids- I researched Duffy for my a level coursework earlier in the year and used Rachel’s videos for context and help. I’m going off to do english lit at uni this September and will undoubtedly be using them for both education and entertainment for the next few years xx
I studied English Literature here in the United States! It's a tough degree to get, but it's worth it. If employers can't seem to grasp what you gain from such a degree (because in the hellhole we live in if it's not STEM it's "worthless") talk about how amazingly honed your communication skills are. You're able to create and edit company documents of all stripes, from client emails to training manuals and more. But beyond the written word you'll be able to research and present complex data sets with relative ease, which is especially great in creating an onboarding program for new hires or developing professional development seminars and courses. Have a great time in university!!!

i relate to what she wrote at the beginning because i also published a poetry collection when i was younger and i’m soooo embarrassed by it now. it’s not even half as good as hers. i have definitely improved a lot since then and i have a much better understanding of poetry and structure and a greater appreciation for it, but i still have a such a long way to go
It is so wonderful to see an intelligent and passionate young woman providing such lovely and detailed constructive criticism to another intelligent and passionate young woman. I wish I could have seen content like this as a young girl. This is the definition of women supporting women. You acknowledge the shortcomings while also celebrating all of it’s strengths and it was heartening to watch.

I'm interested in this subject and it's not easy to find content that explains the theory in such a critical and passionate way. Dear Rachel, I just want to tell you that I am in absolute love with your poetry videos. I started studying literature last year because of you, because you ARE smart and you DO understand poetry (i know you know this but i’ll say it anyway). I’ve struggled with mental illness for years now and once i started studying at university it was really hard for me to read everything I was supposed to and I ended up not attending very many lectures. But! I have watched and rewatched your videos so much that I was actually able to get a B on my first exam, which was, in fact, a poetry analysis. I honestly didn’t have a clue about poems before you and now I’m able to analyze them fairly well according to my uni! So seriously thank you so much❤️

A late video but I met her literally last week, she performed at a poetry festival i worked at. Said really good stuff and she is very cool - she drank with the volunteers and committee that evening! Now she is one of the head judges for the Foyles young poet's prize!

I've been feeling really down on poetry bc I just feel like I'm not growing and writing the same thing over and over again. Good review. I haven't read her poetry before but as you show, it's really well put together! Whenever I write poetry and while I go in to depth, I always naturally include rhyming. Is this an amateurish move? I think I should move on to writing poetry that is 'poetic' without using rhymes as appears to be the case in any of the more professional poetry I've read.
I definitely don't think it's an amateurish move to include rhymes in your poetry. Most (if not all?) of the Elizabethan and Romantic poems that I have read have a certain sense of rhyme and structure to them. Of course this tradition is not as strictly followed today as it maybe was a few centuries ago, but in my opinion (and in my experience) rhyming poetry is not at all considered less poetic.

Man, i used to follow Savannah on here - her videos were definitely a huge impetus for me to think more critically about my own poetry; she was always so gracious to criticism in the comments. I definitely remember one person being particularly focused on the rambly way she wrote, and it really encouraged me to practice writing more succinct poetry. I really liked Savannah's poetry cause, at the time, my style was similar, and i saw it as a grest opportunity to take in the relfections that she herself expressed. I definitely think that her struggle with rambling poetry was similar to mine, in that i'd just write more and more trying to adequately express an idea, and then proceeding to get lost in the sauce lol. Its a nice surprise to see you make a video on her!

I’ve just seen Chad Chad’s video regarding some Gabbie nonsense, I wasn’t really invested in all the drama stuff and mainly used it for background noise while doing something else, but she kept singing your praises and how you did book reviews and poetry stuff. Your videos are great! I haven’t seen too many yet, but I really enjoy what I have seen! It’s understandable that you took a break from poetry, honestly I find it pretty wild how I just found your channel at around the point you decided to try it out again

She has a particular sound that is so lyrical and sincere when she reads poetry which I really love. I have her second collection 'Sweet Dark' and I absolutely love it, I haven't read graffiti but I get the impression that this second collection is much more original and personal, I can't wait to hear your opinion!
Savannah Brown definitely feels like she was a writer before a youtuber. Like I'm sure some of the youtubers who write poetry books liked poetry before, but with Savannah it definitely shows that she has a deep rooted love for writing and that love started before money was a part of it. I hope that makes sense.

because of how beautifully you talked about nature imagery vis a vis the human body, I have a band recommendation for you: the amazing devil. they're an indie folk band, and they're incredible lyricists - their songs are poems in and of themselves. example: "And these lines aren't wrinkles, dear heart / They're just dollops of paint on a new work of art" or "Your eyes aren't rivers there to weep / But a place for crows to rest their feet"

This sounds like envy, when one desires to be or have what another has, they may feel inferior, and make themselves feel superior by making themselves seem like they have contempt for the one they envy. It’s a tough part of human nature to navigate within and without.
I think it's fascinating that you found Abigial Cook's poem to be excellent, as I personally found it to be underwhelming. There's so much to be explored in the metaphor that is "my body is the garden I grew up in." I was disappointed by the lack of specificity, and felt like the connections between growth, motherhood, and life were underexplored. What does it mean to have rose bushes for lungs? It seems to suggest a tension between something this necessary for living, yet also self-destructive. What about a bird cage for a rib cage? What is she holding in there, and why is it caged? But none of that complexity is expanded upon (or even acknowledged TBH) I don't know. To me, the poem feels deeper than Instagram poetry, but still not quite as deep as I would hope for when comparing a body to a garden (there's just so much there!!) I don't know if I've made my point clearly, but just wanted to share my thoughts :)

It's good to be critical, it's good to be very critical, but sometimes what you do is compare artists as if you wanted one to be like the other, and you have to keep in mind that it might not be for you and that different people have different styles. Not a big fan of Savannah Brown, but her way of writing is hers, and she's obviously talented.
Definately has skill and effort there, although I do think it reads as journal scribblings than thought out poetry. Still not a bad work... Welcome back to poetry reviewing!

I am so happy to see you doing another poetry review video after the antics of that woman. It was your reviews that allowed me to finally start to understand and appreciate poetry. It would have been a tragedy had her vindictive cruelty had silenced you on a topic you’re so obviously passionate and knowledgeable about. I am also happy to hear that you are trying to get your own work published, your book with Kyra is still one I read when I want a laugh.

I just want to tell you that I am in absolute love with your poetry videos. I started studying literature last year because of you, because you ARE smart and you DO understand poetry (i know you know this but i’ll say it anyway). I’ve struggled with mental illness for years now and once i started studying at university it was really hard for me to read everything I was supposed to and I ended up not attending very many lectures. But! I have watched and rewatched your videos so much that I was actually able to get a B on my first exam, which was, in fact, a poetry analysis. I honestly didn’t have a clue about poems before you and now I’m able to analyze them fairly well according to my uni!

I've really only just discovered your poetry/literary themed videos, you really have a way of breaking it down without a lot of bias. I've always enjoyed grammar and sentence structures, maybe I will start learning about that again?

A late video but I met her literally last week, she performed at a poetry festival i worked at. Said really good stuff and she is very cool - she drank with the volunteers and committee that evening! Now she is one of the head judges for the Foyles young poet's prize!

aww I'm sorry abt the mic issues and the frustration. thank you for the video. I've been feeling really down on poetry bc I just feel like I'm not growing and writing the same thing over and over again. I dont have access to courses or a lot of time to dedicate to this stuff so videos like this are so didactic and really help me think how I can try to learn and be better. also it's an added bonus that I love Savannah's videos but never got to read her poetry. thank you!

Good review. I haven't read her poetry before but as you show, it's really well put together! Whenever I write poetry and while I go in to depth, I always naturally include rhyming. Is this an amateurish move? I think I should move on to writing poetry that is 'poetic' without using rhymes as appears to be the case in any of the more professional poetry I've read.
Try writing songs
I definitely don't think it's an amateurish move to include rhymes in your poetry. Most (if not all?) of the Elizabethan and Romantic poems that I have read have a certain sense of rhyme and structure to them.
Of course this tradition is not as strictly followed today as it maybe was a few centuries ago, but in my opinion (and in my experience) rhyming poetry is not at all considered less poetic.
I'm SO happy that you're back to talking about poetry in whatever capacity you're comfortable with!
amazing analysis, i've been curious to know what more people think of her works. I think I can relate to her a lot being autistic and having so many existential thoughts that i find hard to put into the right words

Man, i used to follow Savannah on here - her videos were definitely a huge impetus for me to think more critically about my own poetry; she was always so gracious to criticism in the comments. I definitely remember one person being particularly focused on the rambly way she wrote, and it really encouraged me to practice writing more succinct poetry.
I really liked Savannah's poetry cause, at the time, my style was similar, and i saw it as a grest opportunity to take in the relfections that she herself expressed. I definitely think that her struggle with rambling poetry was similar to mine, in that i'd just write more and more trying to adequately express an idea, and then proceeding to get lost in the sauce lol.
Its a nice surprise to see you make a video on her!

I haven’t read her poetry collections yet, but Savannah Brown’s ‘Loving Like an Existentialist’ is one of my favourite poems of all time, so I was super excited to see you review Graffiti :) it’s nice to see you getting back into poetry, you’re genuinely an incredible critic and you’re clearly very passionate about it as an art form.

I’ve just seen Chad Chad’s video regarding some Gabbie nonsense, I wasn’t really invested in all the drama stuff and mainly used it for background noise while doing something else, but she kept singing your praises and how you did book reviews and poetry stuff. Your videos are great! I haven’t seen too many yet, but I really enjoy what I have seen! It’s understandable that you took a break from poetry, honestly I find it pretty wild how I just found your channel at around the point you decided to try it out again

I'm so glad to see you making poetry videos again :) I love Savannah Brown- I am very glad you liked the collection without knowing her, it's interesting me because having watched her for a few years, I totally hear the poems in her voice. She has a particular sound that is so lyrical and sincere when she reads poetry which I really love. I have her second collection 'Sweet Dark' and I absolutely love it, I haven't read graffiti but I get the impression that this second collection is much more original and personal, I can't wait to hear your opinion!
Savannah Brown definitely feels like she was a writer before a youtuber. Like I'm sure some of the youtubers who write poetry books liked poetry before, but with Savannah it definitely shows that she has a deep rooted love for writing and that love started before money was a part of it. I hope that makes sense.

because of how beautifully you talked about nature imagery vis a vis the human body, I have a band recommendation for you: the amazing devil. they're an indie folk band, and they're incredible lyricists - their songs are poems in and of themselves. example: "And these lines aren't wrinkles, dear heart / They're just dollops of paint on a new work of art" or "Your eyes aren't rivers there to weep / But a place for crows to rest their feet"
while i enjoy the commentary stuff, would love more poetry videos in the future rach

Good to see your face light up again as you excitedly discuss poetry again. Its funny tho, the comments that body slammed you came from a person who tries waaaayyy to hard to appear like a tortured artist, but you literally are one...because of her! Thanks to she-who-shall-not-be-named, you exude that energy naturally and I find this ironic.
This sounds like envy, when one desires to be or have what another has, they may feel inferior, and make themselves feel superior by making themselves seem like they have contempt for the one they envy. It’s a tough part of human nature to navigate within and without.
i haven’t read her poetry but i’ve just recently read her first novel and i enjoyed it a lot
I think it's fascinating that you found Abigial Cook's poem to be excellent, as I personally found it to be underwhelming. There's so much to be explored in the metaphor that is "my body is the garden I grew up in." I was disappointed by the lack of specificity, and felt like the connections between growth, motherhood, and life were underexplored. What does it mean to have rose bushes for lungs? It seems to suggest a tension between something this necessary for living, yet also self-destructive. What about a bird cage for a rib cage? What is she holding in there, and why is it caged? But none of that complexity is expanded upon (or even acknowledged TBH) I don't know. To me, the poem feels deeper than Instagram poetry, but still not quite as deep as I would hope for when comparing a body to a garden (there's just so much there!!) I don't know if I've made my point clearly, but just wanted to share my thoughts :)

It's good to be critical, it's good to be very critical, but sometimes what you do is compare artists as if you wanted one to be like the other, and you have to keep in mind that it might not be for you and that different people have different styles. Not a big fan of Savannah Brown, but her way of writing is hers, and she's obviously talented.
Definately has skill and effort there, although I do think it reads as journal scribblings than thought out poetry. Still not a bad work... Welcome back to poetry reviewing!
It's sad how most people would rather watch your drama content than your really interesting deep dive into the English language and the artistic use of it.
