True. When I had a group of three when I first started the hobby they were extremely depressed and nippy with each other! I only took them in originally because a friend was moving away and I took his tank. I wouldn't have bought them otherwise but I've expanded the group to 6 and they truly blossom in larger groups! They seem so much friendlier and playful instead of actual aggression. 30 gallon with Java fern and a rock maze they love to swim through and take breaks in. My favorite thing is when they perk up in the morning when I feed them and the swarm the top at the site of me! So cute!
Very hardy fish. I had a lonely black skirt tetra that lived for 9 years. I'm watching this because it died recently and I miss it so much. . .
I have 8 white skirt tetra in a heavily planted 55 gallon tank. They are nippy toward each other and largely hide in the foliage and school together only when stressed from things like me gardening the tank or water changes. Due to their nippy nature toward each other, I don't know how the long fin variants could be a good option. They are aggressive eaters, feeding on any fish food I try. I do not recommend duckweed. It gets in the way and is very hard to get rid of. Any floating plant is better than duckweed.
I have 3 white and 4 black . I love both but the black ones are my favorite. I got the long fins, I definitely need a couple more .
Black skirts are one of my absolute favorite fish and I *love* that you got the tank size right for them! (such a pet peeve of mine that so many people think tiny tanks are okay for these guys)
Really hope to get some one day and give them the home they deserve
I have a 10 gallon tank with a huge aristone/air pump, a nice filter with heater, I have them with white skirt tetra, six glofish tetras and I notice all the tetras I have got in a huge school even with my five black skirt tetras they live happy and don't bother each other and my pleco likes to be around them 🥺
I have three black skirts right now in a tank with neon tetras. They've all been together for about 4 months and for the most part get along great, until feeding time. I have to watch every time I feed because the black skirts will hoard all the food, so I end up putting food in different areas of the tank so the neons can get some. I have a 10 gallon right now (just got into the hobby last year after not having an aquarium for 30 years) but will be getting a 20 gallon soon, and adding more black skirts, due to you saying more than 3 is needed.
have you noticed any aggression towards the neons? i have 10 neons and 4 black skirts and they seem to chase my neons and scare them. 3 recently died so trying to figure out if it was because they were just bought or stressed from the black skirts
@@kittys3791 Yes they are aggressive towards my neons. My neons are constantly hiding behind a decoration.
I love black skirt tetra! I have nine right now with eight white skirt tetra. They are so graceful when the move in unison. Three of my black skirt tetra are nine years old and three inches long. If the water is kept clean and they are fed properly with proper filter maintenance they can live a long time . I just make sure if I have less then six tetra I go and get three more they are more comfortable in a large shoals. I have kept this fish for fifteen years. I have had the pleasure of seeing the males mating dance it is Soo cute. Any one look for a beautiful fish to put in there tank this is the one you should definitely check out. Greetings from Pennsylvania
The guy that made this video said they only live maximum 5 years. You say you kept them for 15 years?
Well I hope you're right because I just added 5 to my tank.
Loads of great information there Chris. Enjoyed this species profile. 👍
I had some Black Shirt tetra that was 3 inches in length.
Awesome video, i didn’t even think of feeding them worms until you said that i guess it was a mental block lol but i just gave them some that i had for my betta and they went crazy for it thank you for the tip!!
Very informative, thanks for sharing 👍🏿
I have three that I have had since June 2017.
I've never seen a species profile on this fish. Great video! 👍
I got 6 of them in 30 gallon but i want to buy another 6.
my black skirt tetras killed my Albino Corydoras
Do black skirt tetras like wave maker??
I wanted to get a 29 gallon but I was talked into a 20 gallon tall. 😟
I have three black skirt tetras and six dalmatian mollies. I’m worried now, should I get two more black skirt tetra?
Or, should I take the tetras back to Petco to rehouse them?
I would just get 2 more.. You shouldn't have any issues with such a small bio load..
Very hardy fish
Hey my Black tetras arent eating for 5 days now what should I do? Pls tell😭
I’m having this same problem I only have two too
@@kylejenkins9389 Try feeding them blood worms they worked for me.
i was given a metric tonne of tetra tropical flakes and aqueon tropical flakes, are these okay? i know you suggested api
Yes use what you have!!
Very good info.
It's to late I just bought home 5 of them.
Yeah I got rid of mine because they put my Betta in the corner and ganged up on him .... horrible fish by nature ...
Black skirts are infamous fin nippers so keeping them with a betta fish isn't the best choice, though I've seen it work out with the environment and a bit of luck
