I would not recommend converting the link couplers on the passenger cars to knuckle couplers. That change will significantly expand the distance between cars and look quite unrealistic. I do have a couple of baggage cars that are converted on the end that connects to locomotives, so I can run link coupler passenger cars with locomotives with knuckle couplers. The extra space between the tender and baggage car is not as noticeable, particularly when the locomotive tender was originally equipped with a knuckle coupler.
I have been thinking that same thing! My plan is to buy a pair of knuckle couplers, one to put on the baggage car and the other for 290's tender. In this manner, 290 can pull any train and the passenger consist can be coupled to any locomotive. Is this what you mean to say?
