Since getting a terminal diagnosis, I found it ironic OP used the term "bought the farm" (literally purchased a farm). "Bought the farm" is a common euphemism for being dead.

Something of a dark history to the term also. Used to be families would take a mortgage to buy a farm, and also take out a life insurance policy at the same time on the husband who did most of the manual labor. Bear in mind this is from the days of small family farms. When the husband died, proceeds from the life insurance would comfortably pay off the farm and most of any operating loans that the farm had. Dying literally bought the farm and reduced the operating costs enough for the surviving spouse/children to make a comfortable living on the farm.
