Even with whatever waivers the "contestants" signed, it is still illegal to lie on applications and bring people on board under false pretenses, especially in the UK, where labor laws are rather strict.
Exactly, waivers aren't an excuse to commit crimes, they are a financial law thing, same thing for NDAs, you can't sign a waiver that turns you into a slave for example.
yeah I feel like there could still be a lawsuit over this. It's one of those things where regardless of what's written on paper, if the contestants would have all reasonably expected a real and fair competition but it turned out to be rigged from the start, then that's still a huge legal problem. Not to mention that even discounting the contestants, if the show is *advertised* as being a true contest and not a rigged scripted show, that could get them in trouble as well. There have been countless cases of shows getting into big trouble because they were rigging results while still trying to seem like actual game shows.
I expect some sort of lawsuit against Netflix for trying to scam their way out of paying extras union wages by making them think they are contestants. That is a substantive falsehood no two ways about it.

I know exactly why they did this. They didn't want to hire extras for their show. So they lie about a gameshow and half-ass the costs at the expense of their contestants' health while promising false prizes. This is grounds to be sued and prosecuted, hard, waivers or not.

tbh the amount of people i've seen going "well what did the contestants expect lol" is really depressing. Netflix are literally the ones pushing the idea that they knew what they were getting into, when a whole bunch of this shit wasn't in the contract and in fact was seemingly made up literally on the spot because they didn't playtest any of it! and besides it's *literally the biggest cash prize ever*, being given out in the UK where the standard of living is kind of collapsing and people seriously do need the money. you'd think the source material would've engendered some sympathy as to why someone might reasonably go for that despite the risks, but of course it happens in real life and the show's messages just get thrown in the toilet.

I don't understand the point of this reality show. A scripted Squid Games reality TV show with actors, unpaid extras and no effects is just a bad version of the original show. Netflix: "Squid Game was really popular, but you know what it was missing? Us violating labor laws and getting sued."
Add on that the actors unions could pile on that the contestants were functionally extras and are thus due a union wage and treatment and Netflix could not only be on the hook for pay but for punitive damages to make sure nobody trys to pull this shit again. I've gotten to do a couple in the past and seeing how much one person gets paid over another or knowing that certain folks are GUARANTEED making it further than others because of flight plans, payments, etc just helps connect the dots that some stuff is not up to skill and all about what the producers wanna see at the end of the day. I think a lot of people genuinely don’t understand just how scripted reality shows are. Most have multiple ‘auditions’ of real people, with the whole intent being that the producers can pick from a pool of potential people to craft a very careful narrative. Hell, one of the biggest shows in the UK, the X Factor, literally has a stage where they just say ‘Anyways even though at least 150 people passed the first stage the ‘Judges’ then eliminated 110 of them’ lmao. If you ever see Dick Masterson talk about his time in the ‘Dr Phil House’ he said that producers would walk in mid argument between two contestants and ask them to repeat the lines just so they could get a better take.

Whole residential neighborhood displaced cause of the cold, power was down while the fire was up for the whole four block residential area along that strip of sherbrooke est (started sometime after my three am smoke till they tore half the building down the next day), buncha shelters that were already operating at capacity led extra campaigns to include anyone caught in the lurch during this horrific weather. The ice storm trauma runs very deep here. Experiencing irl shivers checks
