Something I also love about Jonathan is how he remains accessible and fun while showing how incredibly knowledgeable and smart he is. I think it's important to recognize that intelligence does not just come in one serious, academic, non-colloquial package. -S
I would like to mention that Karamo is a Licensed Social Worker, who is a mental health professional and I think that is how he approaches his contribution to the process
For sure! I agree. I think Karamo's more serious approach to his work comes from the fact that it is something he takes very seriously. But in the same regard, I think that a lot of the connection that he forms with the subject of each episode is probably cut from the episodes, both for time, and because (frankly) it's not interesting for TV. Not when you have to fill time with SO much in each episode. I don't think they would ever do this, but imo it would be cool if they released each individual member's journey with the subjects as bonus videos, in full, so we could see the process individually as well as collectively.
@@thethebest3263 Not necessarily. I often have big ol' crushes on people I have no interest in actually sleeping with; just means I appreciate them as an individual/ really, really like them. Straight/ gay/ bi/ whatever, let em crush for crushing's sake ;D
There is one thing that you left out. Jonathan is as sharp as a tack. You may not pick on it on Queer Eye but watch Gay of Thrones or listen to his podcast. There is lot going on in that head of his. He is astute and more socially and politically savvy that you would imagine.
This is exactly what I was thinking! Getting Curious really shows a different side of him. He's not only all the things Karsten said in this video but is also very intelligent and a great interviewer.
i'm a tan stan myself (queer girls love him cause we live in button down shirts and that's the tea) but man what i wouldn't give to spend a day with johnathan. he's literal sunshine and the world is a better place with him in it
i've been saying this for a while, but i admire jonathan not just for how unapologetically himself he is, but how JOYOUSLY himself he is. as someone who's been the odd one out her whole life in many ways (one of them is being queer) & who can't even hear someone laugh nearby without thinking they're laughing about her, who knows confidence is fragile and who lives in the feeling of judgy stares even when they're not there, jonathan is everything i want to be. and i loved your comment on how he allows everyone else to open up by being so loudly and joyously himself first. he does. he only exists on my screen & i still feel like he gives me permission to be myself more just by being himself first. - jessie
I totally agree with you Jonathan Van Ness has such a radiant and positive outlook and he embraces everyone for who they are! He doesn't Try to fix them in the same way, it's more about building off what's already there!
Yeah. I'll admit that I can often find the more flamboyantly gay mannerisms to be quite grating (I dunno, I'm from a pretty low-key, emotionally restrained culture), but I try and stay open and accepting, and looking past mannerisms and to the attitude on the other side. This guy seems like a kind person.
It's good that you're trying to stay open and accepting, but the way you worded that makes it sound like his mannerisms are a flaw of his. If you just don't like loud people that's fine, but if you specifically find the flamboyancy annoying it doesn't sound that accepting. Judging by your username I'm assuming you're from Norway and as a fellow scandinavian I don't really think our culture is a valid reason. I'm not saying you're homophobic, but a lot of the time people find homosexuality fine as long as the person isn't stereotypical. Even some gay people think this, because they've internalised that "acting gay" is a bad thing, which it of course isn't. I don't know if this applies to you but it's something to reflect on and deconstruct if you want to be accepting.
By "low key, emotionally restrained" I assumed you meant the jantelov attitude rooted in the scandinavian culture. If you didn't mean that, alright. That still doesn't change anything I said in that comment, but if you don't have anything to say about that then sure.
Jonathan is my absolute favorite! If you didn't know he has a podcast that is AMAZING- Getting Curious with Jonathan Van Ness. He really is such an intelligent and thoughtful person. I can't wait for season 3 of Queer Eye!
Also, I'm glad other people see this show for how good it actually is. I was prepared for a regular, over-dramatic reality when it was in fact such a wholesome show. I felt more loved watching it than any other reality show. And, I love all of the Fab 5, though if I had to- BOBBY IS THE BEST HE DOES SO MUCH I LOVE HIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love Jonathan but my sweet baby Bobby is such a honey pie and he's always forgotten and even the show forgets him sometimes and doesn't show him having meaningful conversations with the contestants. I want him to have more screen time.
i loved so much how you pointed out how Jonathan's unique fun energy makes him the most essential member of the gang, but still highlighted the qualities of the rest of the fab5 :-) 💖
They're all great guys, but Jonathan was the one I noticed immediately for the very reasons listed in this video. His help is the most practical and the fact that he tries to impart a sense of self-love and acceptance/appreciation of one's uniqueness is one of the highlights of the show imo. He's also funny af.
THANK YOU for this. Whenever I try to tell someone who loves films about this show they always just get the: is a reality show. But is more than that and FINALLY someone got that
HE'S RIGHT AND HE SHOULD SAY IT. jvn is the soul of the show because he's silly, solution oriented, and still addresses deep seated issues, but in a cute way. We love
I don't know if you already know about it, I think everyone should listen to Jonathan's podcast "Getting Curious". It is like my favorite because it's actually really informative and he is always just so excited and encouraging to his guests. Anyone who hasn't listened to it should check it out!
That pretentious shirt is perfect. I have been watching your channel for awhile and I'm always amazed at how insightful your videos are without actually being *that* pretentious compared to more popular film essay channels. It's a rare thing to find in video essays nowadays it feels like. Thanks for keeping it real, Karsten.
another thing i notice he does that probably goes unnoticed for a lot is how he often says things like "omg i'm so sorry but you're so gorgeous i don't know if i can help myself" to the very straight guys and i just know for a fact it's not just thrown around just because. he puts himself on the line so they feel sexy without making it sappy and so it doesn't feel as weighted or forced he's actually very perceptive and can be very subtle but since he's so loud it goes unnoticed which is a crime. he's way more than just a punchline or gorgeous outfits
Thank you!!!! I’ve had a hard time accepting Jonathan because he reminds me of myself, how extra he can be. Being loud and chatty is my norm but something I worry might affect those around me. Often I’ll see Jonathan and think “he’s not letting others shine”. Watching your video was a incredible moment for me because of your point that by Jonathan being silly and showing his full personality, it allows others to do the same without fear. When I look at my life now, I see that to be true for me also! I just never realised this before but it feels like a weight has been taken off my shoulders!
I loved this video - I totally agree about Jonathan. There is so much to who he is and how he knowledgable he is. Alsoooo I LOVE THE ROBOTS TEE! Ahh I giggle every time I think about you saying it's your favourite film 🙈
"My sweet baby boy Antoni" I immediately pressed like
i adore antoni
Something I also love about Jonathan is how he remains accessible and fun while showing how incredibly knowledgeable and smart he is. I think it's important to recognize that intelligence does not just come in one serious, academic, non-colloquial package. -S

Maria M i’ve started to french tuck and i like it ! but tan will never make me get rid of my band tees 😤
antoni was wearing a bunch of band tees in season 2 so (hopefully) they are safe from tan's judgment

*puts bobby as the face of confronting the past openly* I love how detailed you are with all this

As someone who knows nothing about the show, this is a totally dope insight into part of what makes it special. Killer video dude 🙌

i truly enjoy all of your videos, but this was totally unexpected and will be on repeat for the next half hour!!!!! thank you as always

I absolutely LOVE THIS video SO MUCH!
I always get exited when I see a new Karsten vid!
Absolutely loved this vid! so good!
He talks a bit about his life in a few episodes of his podcast Getting Curious. JVN is precious.

Dude, this was a wonderful breakdown of JVN, loved it!!!! Also your love of Antoni (and your lil Antoni impression!!) made me smile :)
Yes Jonathan is like a Saint in our pop culture. He's incredible. I'm glad someone made a video to analyze why. This has been a great experience.
