- Here are just a few things we changed to make our Roadtrek a bit more "livable" (for us anyway). The absolute best improvement is no more battery problems with the switch to Lithium batteries! See my other videos on switch to battle born batteries
Always interesting to see what folks do to their RT's. Thanks!
Your videos are great. Thanks so much.
Jack, these are some great improvements to this coach. You almost have yourself a well equipped ZION model now!!! :) The only thing I have to say is that the batteries should never be installed inside a coach due to off gassing when they are being charged. No matter of the batteries involved there is a reason why RoadTrek has them mounted under the coach on the outside. This information has been stated by the CEO himself...Jim Hammill Other than that?.... Love what you have done.
Thanks Deron. lithium ( lifepo4) batteries will not off gas and should be installed inside since you can not charge them below freezing without damage to them.
Excellent job thank You so much for sharing this video. I was considering one of these but these improvements would be great to make I will start with the Batteries and running boards possibly up the inverter size and if the additional generator is needed yes that too. Possibly we have to run the 30 amp cord straight to the Generator in Board. It may need a plug to revive it added.
We always have to make upgrades and improvements no matter what we get it seems.
Thank You so much
Hi Kathy, Yes, the batteries have been the best thing I have done to any motorhome I have had ever! Make sure you check with the battery company and a rv tech to make sure things will work as good in yours. I think now the only use I will have for the generator is to run the air conditioning if not plugged in to to a park but the batteries can give me a couple hrs of air cond time. My 2000 watt inverter is working everything I need. Jack
Hi Jack, Great video! I just purchased a new RT Simplicity & we need to upgrade the running board as you did. my wife has difficulty getting in & out. Would it be possible for you to find out the brand name on the one you purchased & let us know, I'm sure there are others that would be interested in this mod. Keep the videos coming! Thanks.
I put the running boards on before I started making videos. That would have been a good one to video though. The boards are made by Luverne. That was the same company that made the sliding door step that came on the Simplicity. I was able to use the brackets from that step and just add the drivers and passenger door brackets. I see they have changed the rubber pads but I think it may still be the same brackets. I did cut the passenger board down but thats easy with a hack saw. You will have to do a litttle trimming on the propane door and move the magnet that holds it shut. Here is their site. www.luvernetruck.com/running-boards-side-steps/o-mega-2-6-inch-oval?p=1&side_application_desc=1788
@@Flicka20 Thank you! Another quick question for you, I am debating if I should add solar panels or just add 2 lithium batteries like you did. Is the generator / alternator sufficient at keeping your batteries charged ? Do you need to run the alternator often ? Thanks again!
@@ASmith-lh7ex I use about 60 amps a night from my batteries and my engine alternator puts out about 70 extra amps per hr to charge my batteries . Since we drive just about every day at lease an hr it's no problem charging them back up to 100%. The batteries were the best investment I have made to my RT. I have all the power I need now. If you have a underhood generator you have to do things a bit different than I did but it's still doable. Battle born can help you on that.
Fine job
Nice mods. I recently installed Battleborns replacing the horrible Ecotrek system.
Regarding the heater, which brand where can I buy it. Also, LP hose, also would you be able to show how you ran the hose?
I used a wave 3 heater. It will only bring up the inside temp about 20deg over the outside temps. So if 40 outside you get 60 inside. The wave 6 may have been better but it is a bit big to fit anywhere. I connected it with a quick fitting to the existing BBQ connector by the propane tank.
These are really good adjustments, I hope Roadtrek sees this. Howevever for your next video PLEASE slow down with the camera I was getting sea sick trying to follow you. The bathroom changes was the worse in trying to see the whole thing you were moving the camera so fast. I also didn't understand where you put the batteries, was this under the couch in the back ?
Thanks for that input Janet. I really had no idea what I was doing since this was my second attempt at making a youtube video and I will take your suggestions to heart. I did send roadtrek pictures and descriptions of several of my changes two years ago, especially the very easy and cheaper (for them) change to the shore power plug on the back but I see the 2018's are still the same. The batteries are under the "side couch" by the wheel well next to the inverter. I did another video about the install that may be easier for you to see but better take some Dramamine first!
What would it cost to have someone install that lithium setup in a Simplicity? I may buy one in a few months. Going to rent one first.
I'm not sure on that. If you get one that has a underhood generator then the process gets a lot more complicated. I would think an install like mine could be done by a mechanic for around $3k
Have you ever looked into adding an electric motor to the awning? It looks like you can order kits online but trying to see if anyone has ever done it.
Thanks for the comment JH. You know I never really use it much or I probably would. I think in two years I've had it out twice! I have thought about it though, and i carry a battery drill and I bet you could get a hook to put in the chuck and do it that way. I believe you are right.. I have seen aftermarket kits.
Thanks for your video ,very informative, I also have a Simplicity and just wondering if it's just my unit or all the units, but when I hook up to cable I have to run the cable through the window and screw it into the back of my TV . is that just my unit or is your unit the same way. I cannot find any external cable connector, seems a little weird. Thanks again for your great videos
The first time Iooked for the cable connection and didn't find it I called RT and was told there was none. Dumb! You pay extra for the Tv option and they dont install a cable? Anyway, I Installed my own running it from under the van by the city water inside to the back of the antenna box where there is a open connection. It was before I was making videos. Since then I put in a Dish Satelitte system which was one of the best things ever! Been in the middle of the desert watching our shows now. ruclips.net/video/gCJ4A8_AVRc/видео.html
@@Flicka20 thanks a lot Jack. Best wishes
Hey Jack...Would you mind posting where you bought the long running boards that you added? I'd like to add these to my Roadtrek as well. Thank You, Daniel.
I can't remember where I got them but the original chrome step is by Luverne called a mega step I believe. The brackets are the same so I didn't have to change the ones under the slider. You can get the 36" for the drivers door and the long one for the passenger side in a kit from many places. I had to cut the back of the passenger board with a hack saw to get the propane door to swing open.
You might save some money since you only need the brackets for both front doors since the slider already has the brackets by getting the part numbers from luverne for the brackets , the short drivers door board, and whatever length you need for the passenger side. You wont have to cut off so much that way. Just an idea.
Thank you Jack for all the info, much appreciated. Daniel.
How difficult was the toilet swap, and would you mind sharing what model you replaced it with?
I used Dometic model 311. It was an easy swap but to get the lid to stay up I had to turn the toilet a bit so you face out while sitting. That actually gave me more room in the shower and you are not so crowded using the toilet. I moved the paper holder up to the very corner and top of the door. I also changed the shower curtain to follow the door around on hooks instead of that sliding track. Gives you much more room in the shower. This also made it possible to also use the curtain across the doors when they are both wide open for privacy if the sliding door is open. Lately I added a couple of magnetic door stops to the top of the doors to hold them open. ( home depot). You will have to extend the toilet supply tubing by adding a 1/2" sink supply tube and connect that to a 1/2 pvc street elbow to the back of the toilet. ( street elbow is male threads on one end and female on the other. ) Good luck!
Jack which catalytic heater is that? The wave 3 or 6?
Its the Wave 3. I wish I had the room for the 6 though for this one isn't quite large enough to really warm things up. I get about 20 -25 deg over the outside temp which is fine for sleeping where we travel. Probably be better if I would insulate windows and seal air gaps but like I said , I dont travel to cold places.
Señor. Primero aprenda a grabar con una cámara!
Solo mostró las paredes y telas del motorhome... 😠😠😠
