      I'll give you an honest reply, which is, this is not a good way to learn this or anything. Short cuts are designed to get you to the correct answer without understanding why that is the correct answer. I made this video because it was a way to get my students through this quickly so that we could move on toward applying it in other material. If you want to know a little bit more about why this short cut gives you the right answer, here is the original video I made on prefix conversions (can you guess which is the more popular video?) ruclips.net/video/5EcNAxweb44/видео.html. I suspect your teacher was trying to get you to understand the process, rather than just showing you how to get the right answer.

      @@CrashChemistryAcademy I'm curious as to your reasoning for why you believe that short cuts are designed to get you to the correct answer without understanding why that is the correct answer. I've found that both my friends and I after fully understanding material often default to shortcuts in order to save time, which is especially important for performing on tests. Due to the fact that lots of material builds off of previous material, to truly understand something completely you need to know the underlying principles which requires you to comprehend previous concepts. This cycle makes it extremely important for students to understand material, as if they do not they will eventually hit a road block and have to learn it on top of their new material. However it is often necessary to save time by using shortcuts even if you understand a concept. Therefore I believe that short cuts are mainly a result of trying to optimize the process and therefore time it takes to solve a problem in order to improve 'performance', and not to get a correct answer as fast as possible which involves not understanding material. I could be wrong though, which is why I'm asking! Please correct me if I am.

    • @CrashChemistryAcademy
      @CrashChemistryAcademy  2 месяца назад +1

      Well, the intentionality is an assumption, but any short cut (cross multiplying in math for example) is a short cut because it gets you the right answer without any need for understanding why, and for too many students that is why short cuts are used. It is rote learning, which is not learning. If you come up with a short cut yourself it likely means you understand why it works, and you likely understand it at a deeper level than most students. So I say go for it, and more power to you if that is what you are doing.

    Tetra Giga Mega Kilo BASE UNIT Deci Centi Milli Micro Nano Pico =
    Exponents: 12, 9, 6, 3, 0, -1, -2, -3, -6, -9, -12

    • @CrashChemistryAcademy
      @CrashChemistryAcademy  6 месяцев назад

      It's a simple shortcut, and it works. Like most short cuts (cross multiplying in math for example) it allows a student to get the right answer without knowing why that is the right answer. The fact that you came up with the shortcut yourself likely means you understand why it works. So I think the teacher should have asked you to explain why the method works, and then if you offer an explanation that shows you understand it, to then say go for it.

    It took me a while to get this. Until I came across what I was looking for in my text book. Then I took a success break and am now watching this video. I have to say, the metric system is wonderful. Although it is not the standard in the US it is necessary in my line of work along with the US standard. It would be so much better in my opinion if the US would adopt Metric as their standard.
    The US is still the only country that I know of that calls football 'soccer'. They just have to be different.

    • @CrashChemistryAcademy
      @CrashChemistryAcademy  3 года назад +1

      When I was in 5th grade, 1970, the US government announced to the country that the '70s was the decade of the metric system, that by 1980 we would be entirely metric. That was the last I heard about it. I do not recall being taught metrics until I got to college. The '70s came and went, no metric system was established.

    • @miguelquazar883
      @miguelquazar883 3 года назад

      @@CrashChemistryAcademy I was unaware of that. The only person in my immediate family that used the metric system on a daily basis was my father. He is a watchmaker. I learned a bit about conversions doing sheetmetal work (mostly AC duct related) but there was so much room for error most of the time, that using a standard tape measure was good enough. In fact some mechanics were agitated when I would tell them measurements ny the 16th of an inch. I always told them, "Do with it what you will." Because most would round up or down to the nearest 1/4". You can get away with that in the field but the guys in the shop that were fabricating were more precise. When working with elevators and escalators, metric is pretty common, especially with escalators. Escalators have pretty much adopted metric 100% of the time. But the metric system in general is a good one as I said and can be applied to anything. It allows for ultimate precision but is simplified.

    • @CrashChemistryAcademy
      @CrashChemistryAcademy  3 года назад

      @@miguelquazar883 Interesting! Yes over the years US workers/businesses adopted metrics as needed, and about 20+ years ago a worldwide metrics base for all business was established, and any US company doing international business had to comply if they wanted to keep selling outside US borders. So almost any large US business bases all measurements on the metric system, and then converts to English (US) units for sales inside the US. Seems a little backward.

  • @JT-tx2ns

    this is great ! the only thing that's a bit confusing is when you're subtracting exponents of base units from larger prefixes (the ML example). because 0-6 = -6, and since Mega is a large prefix, I guess I just have to remember that I'm moving to the left 6 times (and not -6 times). the subtracting thing works well with the negative exponents.

    • @CrashChemistryAcademy
      @CrashChemistryAcademy  Год назад +1

      It is the difference between exponents that is needed, so with your method that would be absolute value. Otherwise just subtract the smaller exponent from the larger. Sorry for the confusion.
