My favorite song I've listened to for 50 hours straight. This game is basically a poker roguelite, and this song plays continuously through the whole thing, though it's dynamic and changes into several different versions depending on context. But the visuals and psychedelic, 7/4 vibe of the song are entirely intentional.
There are six songs total in this game, and theyre all in this same vibe, basically. Fun fact, the songs in the game files are faster than they are in the game. The game's code slows down the audio to play it. So there are sort of two versions, the in-game one, like this song, and the game file version, which plays faster. NGL, the "sped up" versions are kind of a bop too, lol Ive played Balatro a decent amount. Its a lot of fun! And yes, its definitely a game you can accidentally play until 5am, lol
One thing I have to note, in case others haven't. The game has only one track, practically, but it has 5 versions depending on the situation: standard, during the shop, while choosing a Planet, while choosing a Celestial pack and while fighting a boss. Every time the situation changes the track flows from one version to the other seamlessly. It is incredibly well made. The main menu music, from what I remember, is also the melody for the standard battle situation.
This game is very addictive. Imagine Slay the Spire, but it’s all Poker with Tarot Cards and crazy stuff. It’s insane, and overly complex in the best of ways.
Hey thanks for coming on the show friend!! I can't take all the credit since it was one of my Patron's submissions (What up Husser), but so cool that it struck a chord with you! (Side note, can't wait til you start FFVI)
Im only partway through the video so far, but Balatro is essentially 5 Card Draw Poker but with built-in "cheating", like you can add additional cards to your deck, change their suits, make them worth more points, or add Jokers and wild cards to bump up your score and money. Its hard to describe lol
Man, I got this game like 3 months ago and already have 80 hours played. This thing is addictive BUT so fun and the music fits so well the aesthetic of it. You can play it for hours and you'll never be bored of this theme. Amazing composition.
The fact that I have 240 hours in this game and I never turned the soundtrack off despite it being only one song (and it's seamlessly changing variants) constantly on loop through the entire game says a lot.
I have heard this loop in the background of hundreds of games all lasting longer than 4 hours, and It has become the equivalent of the IPhone Radar ringtone to me.
I often put music while i do other things but there's always the problem of wanting something that you want to listen to but that's doesn't draw that much of your attention because then you're going to be like "wait hold on I didn't appreciate that part of the sing correctly let me run it back" and then you're not doing whatever you were doing 2 seconds ago, balatro hits the spot and is "repetitive" enough that you know you can catch everything if you let it run, but what I do is put a gameplay without commentary and let it run because there's really 1 track in the game that dynamically changes version depending on what you're doing and it's really just a vibe, plus the sfx make each loop a little bit distinct from all the others
It is seemingly DESIGNED to be a song that you can listen to on repeat for days, which is what happens when you play balatro lmao. There is also a really good live version here on youtube now: ruclips.net/video/tURydXfCVlQ/видео.html
playing this game. yeah its alright. until you hit your first great high score then you go. well just one more round and then 5 hours have passed. This game is an absolute timesink and i love it.
Btw speaking of Tarvould's quest, you said you really like what you hear from Disgaea 3 each time. If you want one you will probably really like due to the far west style of it: Disgaea 3 - wanderer's poem/wandering song (same one). It's not a request for a video, just for your own pleasure as it's rather short :D
As far as pronunciation is concerned, everyone says the name the same way you do. However, in the official trailer, it sounds more like ba-luh-tro, with the 'ba' sounding like the 'ba' in 'bad'.
"Poker? Yeah, I like Texas Hold'Em" Unfortunately, Balatro isn't based on Texas Hold'em. It's based on much more traditional poker, where you have what's in your hand and that's it. Granted, with Balatro, what's actually *in* your hand can get pretty bizarre. And it needs to be after a while, if you want to survive the higher blinds.
Good indie roguelikes have pretty great osts to be honest. Balatro is not the first nor the last. Thankfully its more of a roguelike and less of a classic cards game (like poker), so the music encompasses that too. It does have elements from poker, but its really not what you think. Play it. Most great roguelikes are pretty unique anyway and you can't really compare them with anything else when it comes to gameplay let alone with a real life game (nothing like it). And yeah roguelike games with deckbuilding can be pretty amazing and addicting overall if you are into the strategical part of it all. Slay the spire is the king in that genre, for now at least, keep it in mind if you like the genre. Maybe its time to find out?
Ah yes, Balatro.. the one game I've watched for several hours but refuse to buy and play because I know all that will remain is a feeling of emptiness and wasted time after spending dozens if not 100+ hours into it. I've seen enough to know I should avoid it. Also I think the game only has like 1 song.
@@JessesAuditorium Oh, I know it's cheap and I can definitely afford it. It's a good game and I'd enjoy it, but... I already know it's definitely not very healthy for me.
Check out Tarvould's Quest here where I discovered this song!

I hear this game is one of those "I'll just play a few rounds" and you look up and several hours have gone by type of addictive games.
This is exactly right. I cant tell you the number of times this week that, on a work night, I've realized "It's past midnight already??!"
I've never had any interest in poker but it's got its claws in me too
Can't wait for it to appear on the phones. Peglin will have to shuffle to the side.
True story for the best roguelikes out there.
@garr_inc it alr is, and peglin has.

I'm over 20 hours in and had to mute this song lol. Not because it's bad but it's the only song in the game. Great game, just needs another song or 2.
