I think people are forgetting that the thing that makes titanium special is the strength to weight ratio, not the overall strength. It’s not quite as strong as steel is, but it’s weight is closer to aluminum. It’s a Jack of all trades material. Titanium is good for when weight is important, but you need something stronger than aluminum. Perfect for a phone
Not sure about that statement. Metals like Titanium, Steel and Aluminum are usually mixed in an alloy and never used pure. As an alloy, the characteristics are different to a pure element, like strength and hardness… together with other properties like corrosion resistant, conductivity etc.
As long we don’t know the exact material used - your statement could be right, but also wrong. 🤷♂️
BTW: incredible results can also be achieved by using nano engineering. I don’t think this is used for an iPhone - but an other way to change structural factors on metals.
Edit BTW2: what is “stronger” anyway? There different kinds of strong. And what about deformation without fracture? I think I made my point. 😬
@jellyfish1433 Wrong. Titanium is inferior to stainless steel when utiles to protect hardened glass in a window/frame design like iPhones. Agree that titanium has better strength to weight ratio than aluminum. But iPhone 14 is all stainless, no? I posted a long comment here explaining the metallurgic differences, the fact that fundamental structural differences while using 2 metals is literally a apple and orange comparison, and the overall utility of demonstrating uncontrolled tests was super idiotic. All this performative BS demonstrates is how to present uninformed results that wouldn’t even a genius wouldn't factor into their decision of which iPhone to buy.
I also have always been irked that he thinks “reviewer, not influencer” insulates him from criticism.
@@buckfi1109 we do know the exact material used, 6Al-4V (grade 5 titanium) and it is a material that I have a lot of experience with. The stainless steel on the iPhone 14s is most likely 316L, but I couldn’t tell you the exact steel since it’s “surgical grade stainless steel” (either 304 or 316L) when comparing strength on an iPhone, the primary things to look at are drop resistance (how much it deforms after dropping) and scratch resistance, both of which steel is typically more durable. 6Al-4V may not be as durable overall, but it’s strong enough for normal day to day use and the weight savings is a big plus for a phone that large.
@@LongshotLynx okay fine, 6Al-4V may not be the perfect material for an iPhone, but it’s still a very good material and in day to day use the benefits of it being over half an oz lighter outweighs the increase in drop resistance for me. 6Al-4V is a material that I have a lot of experience working with, and if you are dropping it hard enough to bend the frame of the phone, then the glass would shatter either way. The only way to get around the glass breaking is by using a case. As for his test, I will agree with you that they were completely garbage and unrepeatable. Strictly talking about 6Al-4V compared to what I assume is 316L stainless (could be 304/304L or just 316, but I haven’t actually looked into it) like I said, it’s nearly as strong as 316L, but comes in closer to the weight of aluminum (most likely 6061 in iPhones)

There are supposedly mixed reports of iPhone 14 cases fitting iPhone 15's. While the Pro/Pro Max units are universally confirmed to be not cross-compatible, there are apparently some iPhone 14/14 Plus cases that fit the iPhone 15/15 Plus. Knowing you have lots of iPhone 14 cases, maybe you delve into which cases work and which don't?
I think this would be a great time to make that video because people (like myself) are looking for premium alternatives to the finewoven cases, and there are huge savings/sales on previous generation cases.
I saw someone try it already and it fits in a 14 case but it's just barely loose enough to just fall out so no it wont work reliably.

@@shrpe Requires testing. There are listings on Amazon and some reputable brands that advertise compatibility. For example, the Mujjo leather case (one of the recommended leather cases on this channel) is advertised to be cross compatible.

Interesting! Though, as someone who’s maybe dropped his iPhone once in years, I’m always amazed by how many are so concerned about constantly dropping/damaging their phones.
Probably most people manage to drop their phones way more than you my friend , i`m an old fart that try`s to ne super careful with my gear but still manage to drop the buggers , drop shit on it , forget its in my back pocket and sit on it , on what i have seen of the 15 , i`ll stick with my 15 pro max .
Came here to see how the back glass held up on each, but am completely preoccupied by how very cute the dog is in his little tie!

Hi there, I have been watching your channel for over a year now. Really appreciate the objective thorough testing you conduct. However, this iPhone 15 pro drop test felt less informative. Mainly a normal user won’t drop the phone 40+ times in a day. It would be more informative if you showed the result of each drop or after a couple of drops. After 40+ drops, most phone would break. It doesn’t tell us whether iPhone 15 pro or 14pro is more durable.
It’s important people test phones like this, because otherwise I wouldn’t have samples to show to my wife to say: „look, this is what happens when you drop your phone too often“. 😂❤
I feel that videos like this are more for entertainment than for practicality. The minute amount of people that will drop phones at these distances with this precision is practically nil.
Interesting, other drop tests I’ve watched so far have shown the opposite. The Stainless held up better than the titanium in like 3 other videos. I think it’s hard to gauge unless someone is willing to construct or setup a specific drop device. Otherwise, free dropping from your hands and uneven weight distribution presents too many variables to compare.
those tests could also be biased. not saying that they are but you know how some youtubers can be.
So the iPhone 15 pro is more durable than the 14 pro. Glass and titanium. But the problem is the design. So because of the curved edges, it is way more likely for the glass to hit first now. Whereas on the iPhone 14 series, the stainless edge is what usually takes the hit first when a person drops the phone. So the design is now really just stupid as can be. But technically speaking, yeah the 15 series is stronger than 14. More rigid too which is not a good thing

looks like both these iPhones have the same exact frames. Stainless steel technically is stronger than Titanium 485MPa vs 480MPa but Titanium is 50% lighter. Being that this material is built into a small object such as a phone, I'd take the stronger and heavier Stainless steel any day.
Makes no difference, the weak point was never the frame. Titanium also scratches easier. It’s slightly tougher but in the long run it will look more worn. Apple had nothing new in terms of battery life and performance so they added this material as a attention grabber.

The weight is more likely the big factor. I just got my Pro, and it feels AMAZING in the hand. Even coming from a 13 which is a tad lighter, everyone who has held the two would swear the Pro feels lighter for some odd reason. That's more likely to do with the way weight is dispersed throughout the phone, but it's an effect that wouldn't have been possible with stainless steel. I actually held off on upgrading to a Pro last year almost solely due to the weight. The 14 Pros felt like absolute bricks.

I got a new iPhone 14 pro max 3 months ago with loads of gigs on it and purple too. And every time you dropped yours, I HURT!! You have to but IT HURT 🤕 😭😪😅😢😢. I love my phone. I cried. Not really. I like your videos. Keep up the good work.

Great content. Your the only RUclipsr that really talked about the frames, yes titanium is stronger than steel and aluminum But as you saw for yourself the titanium phone glass cracked first. That's becouse titanium doesn't absorb shock, so the shock has to go somewhere, and that would be the glass, and can't forget about the scratches, on steel or aluminum frame can be buffed out or rebrushed, but if the titanium frame scratches its over it will be super hard to nearly impossible to repolish or rebuff, becouse of its hardness. To avoid all this just put your phone in a good case and carry on.
Spot on , and the curved edges imo will allow for more likely hood of a broken screen , the 14 series looks miles better to me .

@@jeromegold3216 Stainless steel's Brinell hardness is typically in the range of 180-400, while titanium's is in the range of 100-200. Hardness isn't the only thing that determines the durability of the material (especially since harder materials are generally more brittle)but stainless is the harder material...
I usually don't go with cases, but I'm not sure this time. The PVD coating seems to scratch easily. I wouldn't say I've been extremely careful with my iPhone 11 pro, but it looks brand new still.

Hi. Big fan of your vids. Bought the mous case based on your recommendations and I’m happy with my purchase. Wanted to request if it’s possible to make your durable tests more scientific (controlled I think that’s word) unlike other RUclipsrs who just, well, drop phones in different ways and expect us to accept their results as definitive.

Hands down the most idiotic thing I’ve seen on YT in a while. Is he really a “reviewer” or was all this performative BS done with only the intent to get us to click the vid and generate $$$ for him? Anyone now believe these “tests” will factor into your buying decision?!
1) Metals have different properties, and when applied in different forms for different purposes, one type of metal can be superior AND inferior dependent on form factor (among other factors) 2) The shape of the metal on these two phones are slightly different, which affects how the hardened glass reacts. Between 2 different metals and structure and function of a metal band protecting the properties of hardened glass, it is closer to an apple versus orange comparison than a “general impression” 3) this is a completely uninformative performance that nobody will ever stop to factor in in their decision.
Far as I’m concerned, all of this only proves you can destroy iPhones if you really want to. Zero practical insight, but thanks for adding to the carbon footprint.

Seems that the titanium frame is so rigid that it transfers too much of the force to the glass, where the steel frame will bend and take most of the impact
I think that might be a good thing if you have Applecare. Fixing the glass will only cost $29 but the frame? That’s probably a unit replacement at $99.
The stainless steel covers the glass entirely. While the new rounded titanium frame doesn't.

I think the iPhone 15 pros are more aluminum than titanium apple said it was through a bonding of an aluminum in frame with titanium outer fame. I think the phone is basically 90% aluminum with titanium as an aesthetics so that’s why it’s slightly heavier than the aluminum , but lighter than the stainless steel, I think it’s more of a material show off rather than an official strengthening of the metals itself. I played with it in the store, and to be honest the lightness is barely any difference then my 14 Pro Max once you live with the phone every day you stop caring about that weight if the weight really bothered you just get the regular 15! if the phones where actually made out of titanium for strength though out it would be 5,000$ phones! just use a case and don't put in back pocket!

Definitely going to stick with the 14 pro max this year. I had iPhone 5 flashbacks of the black paint wearing so easily, looking horrific after some use. I remember having bending issues with the 5 as well which is reminding me of the brittle glass on the 15. Gonna wait this one out.

I've been a phone nerd in more than 10 years and this is the real durability test I need. We need more drops to see if its durable. I've been using iphone12pro max without case for more than 2 years and dropped it so many times but it survive all that

The problem is not stainless steel, aluminium or titanium it’s the glass
Id say its not just the glass but the design , it appears the glass sits almost level with the 15`s edge case , and there is almost no bezel as a buffer , and the narrower curved edge id say is less likely to deflect a hit to the glass .
And also watching Zac of Jerry rig put some pressure on the back glass , it almost fell to pieces .

Titanium transfers more energy to the glass as it is more rigid, and they use less of it. Steel has higher mass and flex, protecting the glass better. Titanium consumer anything (camping cookware etc.) is a marketing ploy, as heaviness isn't an undesirable property of itself.

Irregular drops won't really count. I believe the the 14 is stronger than the 15 based on other youtuber's channel with equal face drop or back drop. If someone who has a compressed machine that would be the best way to test it.

Totally in love with my 15 pro! I absolutely love this phone. It’s a fantastic upgrade especially from my iPhone 11. The display, the speakers, the camera, it’s all just incredible.
I’ll give him this, he’s a “stronger” influencer than the last “model”. This performative BS was a set up to get viewers to watch future videos for iPhone 15 accessories. He intentionally made these tests dumb (parody) to disguise his goal of INFLUENCING followers to watch his future vids about iPhone 15 products.
Although, if this is the first video of his you’ve seen, I wouldn’t blame you one bit for buying into the whole “I’m a reviewer, not an influencer”.
If you know anything about metals steel is stronger than titanium especially when price is considered in the materials. I doubt the supposed Ti is barely titanium but a low grade alloy that squeezes it into the realm of Ti

This just proves that it doesn't matter what your phone is made of. Put a case on it. It also means that don't pay for premium materials on the outside of your phone. It's a gimmick
I don't see why you do that... what does it matter to know how much a phone bends? Shouldn't the target be, how much it can take until it stops functioning? You haven't tested the function a single time.

2:30 “higher strength-to-weight ratio” that’s just it: the 15 weighs less than the 14, meaning they aren’t stronger, they are meant to be *JUST AS STRONG* but *LIGHTER*
If they made them just as heavy, the 15 would be stronger, but that wasn’t Apple’s goal.
