People who blame nostalgia often don't understand the concept. Yes I play it because of nostalgia, it was so good that it makes me nostalgic thinking about it. How many people do you see being nostalgic about the Frostburn update? None, because it was trash.
Nostalgia is a symptom, not the cause.

The Aesthetics of old minecraft feel better in my opinion. I believe that those textures ARE why the game is so recognized today. It was new, different and felt very video gamey. The new versions just don't feel *square*

    • @firstlast-wg2on
      @firstlast-wg2on 21 час назад +18

I think it’s because they feel unique to minecraft. It was a very unique and often ugly (but complimentary) palette made of a limited number of blocks. If we’re just strictly talking about aesthetics, as good as the new architecture looks, it feels like it evolved more in line with the adventure side of the modding community like twilight forest and various mod packs.
Minecraft is more of a full on fantasy action sandbox than a survival/builder sandbox, and it is so so noticeable in the aesthetics/pace of the game.

    • @vinsplayer2634
      @vinsplayer2634 22 часа назад +16

There still are a lot of good arguments for it. The fog is almost objectively better, and most of the textures apparently used to be derivatives of other textures, which makes them all fit together better. And with more contrast within the textures, contrast between the textures in adjacent blocks is less ugly. And the terrain is way more inspiring.

This is a very interesting video to me, as I really do enjoy both old minecraft and new minecraft a lot. But I sort of, play new minecraft as if it was old minecraft, if that makes sense? I took my experiences from old minecraft that I like and brought it into modern minecraft I guess, and the game becomes a lot more fun that way. I never use mending, for example, nor make iron farms, and instead choose to go mining for iron often which is REALLY fun for me because I really enjoy the modern cave systems and cave biomes a ton, and I even mostly stick to iron armor.
I augment my play to how I prefer I suppose- for example i NEVER trade with villagers simply because I find it boring, and I choose to treat them as characters so I don't steal loot or food or beds from them, thus that leads to a bit more challenge and yet also simplicity for my style.
Liking the aesthetics of older minecraft is totally fair- while I prefer the modern "refined pixel artist" style of the new versions, I think newer minecraft has things to learn from older minecraft, namely in its use of atmospheric fog, and its iconic sound design. I've got resource packs that make the grass stepping sound sound a bit like the classic stepping sound while also being more naturalistic, the old iconic water splashing, the old "oough!" mixed with the modern player damage sound, among other things. It feels nice and I think modern minecraft could do some of this without compromising it's current art direction, you know? Bridge the gap a bit!
Your complaint about wolf armor and armadillos was striking though- as, features like armadillo scutes are something I actually appreciate about the modern game. It adds features that offers creative solutions to common community wants and desires- for example, adding more life to minecraft's warm biomes and resources to gather from it makes that area of the game feel unique compared to others, and encourages exploration, or makes your expereince feel different should you choose to stay there. But just adding an ambient animal that doesn't do anything has been greatly frowned upon in the past.. armadillos are known for their protective shells, and wolf armor has been a very commonly requested feature. Tying this string of desires from the community together into a nice little bow is creative and interesting to me, and I really appreciate the armadillo's design for that.
Plus, wolf armor being made of scutes justifies why it works differently than regular ore, completely protecting the wolf until it breaks- it works differently than player armor and horse armor. It's a totally different material with different properties. So not only is it a creative solution, but it makes its own mechanics feel natural. And since you need scutes to repair the wolf armor, they never stop becoming useful as long as you actually use wolves. That's the sort of thing I appreciate about the modern game's design!

i like a lot of Modern Minecraft, but after beginning to play Better Than Adventure - i've never felt more motivated or creative when playing the game. i really feel like i can just build at my leisure without the other objectives annoying me in the back of my mind. sure i can just ignore them, but they're always gonna be there in the back of my head, and some resources i want to build with are tied to progression based areas if i want to make my build exactly how i want it.
the world of Old Minecraft really feels like it's what you make of it, you decide the story, atmosphere, everything. and it really confuses me how people get hostile towards people that prefer the old stuff. like, is it necessary to justify why we prefer a version of a game where the entire point is you can mold it to how your wishes?

I joined the Minecraft party a little late. I think my favorite version is probably 1.18 just because I like the landscapes and deep slate as a block, along with lush caves. Since I didn’t start playing till about 1.16, the progression from stone to iron to diamond to netherite/elytra feels natural to me, and I was actually a little disappointed when they made it harder to get netherite. But I do agree that modern Minecraft with the constant updates has started to feel exhausting. Like I find myself not caring about the sniffers and trial chambers and whatnot.

  • @TheFlamingWaldo
    @TheFlamingWaldo 10 часов назад +5

One thing that really bugged me about minecraft when it got added was villages specifically because they let you skip a ton of progression, and that always bummed me. It's nice to find cool treasure in sunken ships and such, but it's very easy to just beeline for spots where you know treasure'll be and just play that way. I don't think there's anything wrong with this, but when so much of modern minecraft's gameplay gives you so many options to avoid playing the survival crafting elements of minecraft, it almost makes it feel like minecraft is embarrassed of its own foundation. Despite this, I still play modern minecraft, because I just don't feel like the way I play the game has changed much, despite the game becoming more accessible to people who prefer to play in other ways. I still build my silly houses, I still go out and explore, and I still undertake very stupid and lengthy construction projects. I do wish there was an in-game way to disable the wandering trader, though.
Though, I will say, and maybe this is just me, but modern minecraft does sometimes feel like... well... modded minecraft? A lot of the newer features do feel tacked on, like disconnected mods.

"nostalgia" is the worst argument people make against old minecraft imo. "Oh, you only like it because it makes you feel nostalgic". No, brother, I didn't even play this version as a kid, I started in 1.4.2. In fact, I'd say the majority of the Golden Age community didn't play the game before the full release version. Also, but anyone who's ever gone back to their childhood memories at least once in their life knows that nostalgia will only get you so far. No one is going to spend hundreds of hours playing a game simply for nostalgia's sake. If that were the case, the game would get boring very quickly

i dont get how a mob dropping an item is different from it being structure loot, but i do see that updates tend to be more about relevancy than anything really substantial, thats why instead of holding off and making major releases every few years they instead decided to make smaller updates every few months, it is better for that. Modern's progression does suck but it's pretty easy to ignore for me. These are some good points, I mainly just play modern for the block selection and varied methods of obtaining them, I played beta recently and quite enjoyed it til i realised i felt like i was running out of blocks. I guess it might've just been my limited familiarity but probably also the fact i just lost everything to water pushing a bit harder than i remembered, Ah well.

I play modern (well, 1.21.4, for now) completely vanilla minus my own datapack to add green & brown dye recipes. (The jungle is 2.7k blocks away & desert is 7k blocks away. F that, all dyes should be easily obtainable)
    - Consistency
I'm not affected by what you described in this section. I do play a modern version but unless I have a good reason to switch I'm sticking to the one I'm on.
    - Progression
I'm not really affected by this either (yet?) I've been playing on my world for a week, have around 15 in-game hours, & never traveled out side the overworld. Progression in the sense of better tools feels hollow to me because I don't really need them. Right now I only use stone tools & leather armor. The mining speed increase is almost nothing to me, durability is solved by spamming cheap tools/armor, I rarely fight so I never fear for my life, & it's all around not a significant enough improvement for me to actually want them. Also I just really like the more stone-age vibe of using stone tools & leather armor, hehe.
I do feel rewarded for my work but I get that through the stuff I build rather then my tools/armor. I basically treat it like a sandbox like old Minecraft... huh.
    - Performance
12 chunks works for me :D I also have a good computer so this isn't an issue for me
    - Aesthetics
I personally like modern's vibes, might prefer it, not sure.
    - Closing (mine not yours)
I think I overall I like modern Minecraft because I ignore what annoys me & am able to play in the sandboxy nature I enjoy. It feels like older versions of Minecraft but more.

I play old Minecraft because it’s simple. Almost every modern game, whether an indie or AAA title, feels like a 2nd job.
Throughout my years in school, games (almost exclusively Minecraft) was a way for me to disconnect from my obligations in life and just get lost in a virtual world. Being 22 and having a real job and responsibilities, I don’t have the brain capacity to play these modern games; you have to buy it for $70 but the game is half baked. Bug fixes come over time. Then, you gotta buy a battle pass to progress further or else you fall behind and can’t compete. Alternatively these battle passes are completely cosmetic, but that’s where the attention to detail goes because that’s how these barrel scraping game companies make a quick buck.
I exclusively play beta 1.7.3, I have been for a while, outside of the two week Minecraft binge with my friends. It’s simple and straight to the point. There’s a nostalgia factor in there somewhere as well. Most importantly for me, I don’t feel exhausted or as if I’m wasting my time. I feel a sense of relief from life and accomplishment whenever I finish a build.
I have been itching to play multiplayer in this version too. Just haven’t gotten around to it.

I for example love version 1.16 because I played a lot of the Nether Update with my siblings and I have special memories from that time. Also I think it is a very modern but less "nonsense" version of the game. Anyways, the major advantage of Java Edition is the option to pick the version, so anything is possible!

I completely share your stance about "Consistentcy", it's partly why I fell out of Minecraft, because it always felt like my Worlds become "obselete" each year. Thankfully today, I can just stick to one version, but it's mostly one version Post-1.15, because I absolutely love Buffet Worlds as I'm stuck with one Biome.
See, Mojang keeps adding bloat like the Sniffer, but in a Basalt Deltas World, there is no such thing as Sandstone or Terracota, but you can be creative with Blackstone, create Diorite, Granite, & Andesite using Nether Quartz, or use said Quartz for Marble, etc. Having less resources somehow makes you be more creative, but I also love the challenge of having less commodities like the Overworld Trees, the Crimson & Warped Forests made me look for ways to cripple myself for a very cool challenge. The Void Biome is one of my favorites because of its extreme tedium, but highly rewarding to manage to survive in it.

Thank you for this great video, it is true that old minecraft has a lot of pros, and I strongly agree with the fact that the "rpgization" of the game breaks the first concept in a way, and especially progression.
But my favorite thing to do in Minecraft is to find a way to use the new blocs; even if you can do great things with the blocs from old versions, it is so much satisfying to think about the best blocs to use for your building, and then go try to find a large quantity of them. There are also so much new combinations possible each time Mojang adds a new block. I srsly couldn't live without the ton of different woods, the deepslate, the granite/diorite/andesite trio, all the blocs from the Nether, etc... I could probably have a similar experience with mods though

I play Beta 1.7.3 because I think it had the best balance out of any Minecraft version. The shorter progression meant diamond gear wasn't overpowered and you could still survive challenges with stone tier equipment. The lack of hunger and food stacking meant a lone mob didn't have to be capable of singlehandedly killing you in order to pose a real threat (Spiders became obsolete the moment food stacking and hunger was added.) In general, everything was a lot more dynamic in Beta, you never quite knew what challenge the game was going to throw at you next and you could get some real wild and wacky cave generation.

I don't feel bored because I'm building a gigantic map with a ton of houses, castles and others things that are connected to each other. When I'm playing in this kind of way, I feel like I'm really playing in a "sand box" game. I think the biggest problem in Modern Minecraft is that Survival Mode has been so complexify with time that is lost his soul in the process. Even if don't play Beta yet, I love the look of the Minecraft of these days and I use occasionnaly the "Golden Days" Texture pack just to tranform my world into something that look "fresh" again. I also like the old "fog" feature of the old Minecraft that has been completely change since the 1.0.0 version of the game.

Same. I like the new blocks to choose from so I can create different "feels" for different parts of my world. A more dynamic pallette.
I also agree with the survival and progression situation as said in the video. Also, without modification, I think the natural world doesn't look very nice and I wish it could look more like it does in Minecraft Dungeons.

Progression is the main issue with me. Modern minecraft completely ruined it for me. Even though I actually prefer all the other newer stuff added since but old minecraft was definitely better in terms of balance, pacing, and progression.

The aesthetic really is unmatched, it brings out such a whimsical creativity in me its insane. Plus with the older textures and lighting + how the game generally used to be, it allows you to not have to go insanely all out in detail and design to make a build look decent, cause if you updated the average beta build to modern then chances are it doesn't look good lol. But in beta anything you make no matter how high or low effort, it'll more than likely look cool.

I agree. I really enjoy the old Minecraft versions. I love the game and feel a lot of nostalgia (My dad showed me alpha Minecraft when I was 4 years old. I got my own account when I was older and ALWAYS played 1.8 Minecraft.) I also played it on a computer setup made when I was born. I love it. I also really love 1.7.3 and how it feels. No other game is like this in my opinion. I have never paid attention to the new additions to the game. I love Minecraft so much but sacrificing the quality of the game just to generate relevance and discussion is horrible.
I have a deep love for this game, and I appreciate everything about old Minecraft. It's so beautiful. While the new Minecraft looks "better" (quality increased), it doesn't look better. I have played a variety of versions and I will never pick the newer ones. It's just trash.

i dont really have a problem with performance or simplicity. as for the aesthethics, i use mods like Hybrid Beta to bring back the old school terrain generation, and texture packs like Programmer Art Continuation to keep the retro aesthetic of the textures (I also lower my lighting and my graphics settings to look like the older versions of Pocket Edition).
In general I like playing Mineraft modded, and there are so many good mods for 1.20.1 and 1.19.2. Its a whole new world, and these mods can make Minecraft feel fresh without stripping away it's charm.

I started Minecraft when it came out for the xBox. I played that version until last year. I was also playing Java because of the modding ability. But I mostly stayed with Bedrock because my son had a realm I played on. (I must say at this point that I was 56 in 2012 and my son was in his late 30's) He would not turn on co-ordinates and that was fine I had over 100 portals in that realm and carried 4 shulker boxes full of maps to get around. (I had portals that were a 10-minute train ride apart in the nether.) Then Microsoft "fixed" the maps. I rage quit after all that time and just decided that I would only play versions before Microsoft got ahold of it. (I was also mad when they killed Cortana in Halo, but I digress. ) I have 5 or 6 modded worlds that are mostly 1.8 or earlier, and I am happy that what I play will never change unless I want it to. I love the journey map and a few Quality of Life mods and sometimes (since I am retired) play 8 or 10 hours most times and never get tired of my worlds. I am happy like this and since I only got so much time before the curtain comes down, I want my gaming to be stress-free. Thank you for listening - signed CreakyCraftr.

    7:31 I play Alpha/Beta for a couple of reasons:
    1. For a couple of years, i only had a dell computer that wouldn't really run that well, it couldn't really run modern minecraft, anything above 1.16 just would lag like hell, and i would play older versions like Alpha/Beta cuz they actually would run really well and i because i liked playing those kind of versions.
    2. I got into those older versions because of Grians Evo SMP series, and that series made me really like Alpha/Beta, and i think its pretty cool and really simple and i just like the certain vibe that it has.
    3. Obviously i didn't grow up playing Alpha/Beta because i started in 2016 on Release 1.8, and im also really young, but i still like playing those really old versions, even though if its something that alot of more older players did experience, and is something i didn't get to experience and something other younger players didn't get to experience too, but even though its like that, i still really like Alpha/Beta and im glad i get to experience playing those versions now, way way way after older players have played it.

i like older minecraft and i totally agree with all your points! though, i don't play it often cause i feel that there's significantly less to do in it. i get that it's much more simpler and i do like the indie vibes n stuff, but after you play it for like an hour or two and pretty much see everything there's not much incentive left to keep playing, i guess. modern minecraft has a bigger scope i'd say - there's so many things to do and stuff to find that you always just kinda have a goal and, frankly, this play-style suits me more. it does suffer from the same issue as older minecraft - that after you do everything the game has to offer theres not much incentive to play - but i feel like it has a significantly longer play-time before it gets boring.

In all honesty I struggle to play mc for more than a few days at most. But the few times I've gone back to older versions like b1.7.3 or even when i started in 1.2 I just feel more at home then modern. The biggest problem with Modern is that there is no feeling of reward or even purpose because of how easy it is to just break the game. Place a few torches around a flat plane and boom you have 0 reason to build a base and you'll be perfectly safe. Need Materials = Make a farm aka break the game.
But the biggest problem with modern is the overreliance on generated structures...
If you turn off structures and make a world, 50% of the game gets removed. No end, No way to make Netherite, No way to get Heart of the ocean, or sniffers, or archeology, or the new trial chambers, cant make potions because no way to get blaze rods. and probably more that i just forgot about.
Minecraft thrived in the old era because the W O R L D was what was unique and interesting to explore. Not what was inside that world. Finding dungeons were cool because they were rare and somewhat hard to find. Making a farm out of that same dungeon was also a reward for finding it in the first place and was always cool to find a way to make said farm but was never too strong because the mob drops were never too good.
Modern can just be summed up with break the game so you dont have to play it and you can just build. which isnt mc in my opinion, it was the mixture of Building + Survival. and the whole "if you dont want mob farms dont make one" is a horrible argument. If you try to play mc normally without the farms after having them you will lose your mind. You now have forbidden knowledge and you cant "just get rid of farms" because you know how to make them, and they make things easier, so human nature kicks in and says "you could always just make a farm so x is easier" mob farms just shouldn't be in the game, period.

Elytras and hoppers destroyed Minecraft. Everything else, a thousand mistakes by Mojang, can either be fixed or overlooked, but these two items have become so deeply embedded in the idea of the new Minecraft and its gameplay, with the community supporting them, that they’ll never even consider fixing (removing) them. No matter how amazing the new updates are, everything will always come down to auto-farming and flying - meaning after 100 hours of gameplay, you’re in legal creative mode, boredom sets in, and another world wipe comes along, signaling the end of the 2-3 week Minecraft cycle. Mojang really knows how to back their games into a corner...

For a first essay video, I like it a lot. Really well edited and put together. I mainly play modern versions since I have a Realms server with my friends so we're kinda forced to play the newer versions. (Not that we don't like it)
I've thought about giving Beta 1.7.3 and BTA a go but I'm still yet to do my research on these launchers people always tell me to use. I've always used the vanilla launcher since I started playing, and logging in with my account in a third-party launcher makes me think twice. Maybe I'll give it a go, eventually. Who knows. I'm very protective of my account, and I usually don't trust things at face value unless it's open source or something like that. (Feel free to comment if launchers like MultiMC are safe).
Unrelated but I thought you should know this: I made a replica of your cactus farm on my Realms server. I love recreating old buildings on modern versions. It's like real life, where everything we have today, from buildings and vehicles to tools and electronics, are based on already stablished designs from the past when said things were invented.

The vanilla launcher is fine enough to play old versions. When it comes to modding though, the vanilla launcher still works in that regard, but MultiMC is far superior in this since mods for older versions were much different than what we have now. I can assure you that MultiMC is safe though as I use it myself for my own modified version of Beta 1.7.3.

Beta 1.7.3 to me feels complete. I first started playing Minecraft around the time 1.2 rolled out and kept playing each release until 1.7, which for me was a turning point because each update from here felt very out of place. Second hand, ugly new biomes, attack cooldown, elytra... Around this time I ventured back to 1.7.3 because I knew it was the last update before hunger.
I loved it at first sight. The colors were vibrant, performance was high and the whole thing felt complete.
There are a few things that came later that I wish were in it however, like the rest of the music discs, the fishing animation, working furnace minecarts...
I still sometimes play release but every world last only until the dragon is defeated and not an hour more. It's still a fun game, hundreds of millions play it but release to me feels like how Hexxit, Wrath of the Void, Yogbox and other modpacks, fun additions and all but far from the main idea.

I personally have been playing on a server called Modern Beta where you can join on a vanilla modern (like 1.20 and 1.21) versions with no mods necessary at all and the community is nice as well. The things that people have built look amazing and you can build anything and it'd just look.. cool, like even a basic building that would normally look just not that good on a modern version just looks like it fits the area even if it's around an amazingly detailed building.

But, I play it for pretty much all of the reasons you do. The modern game feels too "corporate", and even when I do play it, I _have_ to go full in on any resource packs that revert the look of the game to pre-1.14. It might seem minor to some people, but I can't state enough how much I hate the new artstyle. It lacks the soul and feels so soft and safe.

Things I don’t like in modern minecraft:
    Dog armour. It’s not necessary.
Wind charges and the mace, as cool as it is to have a tf2 loadout in Minecraft it isn’t really fitting compared to the other tools of the game, as most tools in game follow a very basic use, and are pretty much flat models.
Copper. It sometimes has its uses in building, since it’s a nice selection of colours. but overall It’s useless.
The trail chambers. I have maybe been in….one? I never thought to go out looking for one, mainly because it isn’t interesting.
The retexturing of certain mobs. (I Believe it’s cows and pigs) if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
Armadillos, phantoms, sniffers, allay, axolotl, camels, foxes and breeze. I don’t think these mobs fit the game, they make me thing I am in a modded version of the game every time I see them. I would not miss them if they were removed from the game.
    Things I think need work.
Woodland mansions, I think they are the coolest structures but look a little dated, I would fix em up a bit, and put better loot in them
    Mine carts, goes without saying.
Boats. Some bigger boats with sails or so would be cool in my opinion.
Pillagers, just don’t make them drop totems. Reserve that for the woodland mansions.
Witch hut, they are so useless and dated it’s almost funny.
    Jungle temples, again, really dated.
Biomes in general, some are just real boring, and need a bit of extra plant life, structures or mobs added in them, this being swamps, and almost all forests for that matter.
Seed generation, as the nether and caves got updated to be more worthy to explore, the surface world less so, there are a few cases like mountains and cliffs, but otherwise the world feels really flat
End dimension. Needs a-lot of work.
    Things I think are great:
Frogs, the swamp could have used a swampy creature, and it got one,
Decorative pots, scaffolding make’s interior building that bit easier
Nether update, ocean update, village and pillage update, and caves and cliffs update. Made those areas way better to explore.
Let me know what you think
