the Air button on the Scarlett seems clean but not amplified so didn't alter the sound quality a noticeable amount as the "4k" button sounded like a "loudness" was added, adding more bass and treble.. Hermano una pregunta, para captar bombo, timbales, campanas, caja y platillo..🥁 Cual me recomiendas..? La SSL 2+? O la Scarlet 18i8? Gracias por leerme espero tu respuesta bendiciones 👋👋
Great video. Which one do you recommend me to produce and mix Techno ? . I tried Motu M2, the sound is pretty clean , do you think SSL2 could be better than the Motu one . Thx I. Advance.
I have the ssl2 for a year and didn't get any Nice vocal/guitar records. The reading why is because the 48V Phantom power gives only 46.7 volt. My very old Yamaha ov1 gives 47.8 volt. I setup 2 rode m5 stereo. Both Nice net tot Each other and pointng to the 12th fret of the guitar. One mic to the Yamaha and the Yamaha conected in 'Line in' of the ssl2. The other mic went straight in 'mic in' of the ssl2 In this way i can recording with 2 mics wich one was powered 46.7v (SSL) and the other was powered 47.8v (Yamaha) And i could hear the difference. The mic with 47.8 volt sounded far more naturel.
So the SSL has much lower noise floor with maximum gain and the 4K sounds great. Probably not for talking, but I could see myself using it with some instruments and especially singing. For me I think it's worth the extra 100€ (where I live). btw, It goes up to 11 because it's one louder. Edit: I was almost going to buy this device, but then I stumbled upon Black Lion Audio Revolution 2x2 and even though it's over 400€ I had to stop myself from purchasing SSL2+. I looked up every imaginable comparison I was able to find and goddamn it blows pretty much everything away. It skips the RME and Apogee price range and goes straight up to Chandler and AMS level in terms of pre-amp and has the same quality DAC as RME and Apogee etc. Only downside is the 6ms round trip latency at 32 samples, but I can't see it affecting my playing or singing. The pre's demolish everything under 1500€.
no, the things you listed are subjective they dont make a difference in the real world. people believing in "better sound" is silly nowadays, this isnt 1940, better sound is not better, its just boring.
Hey i'm interested in getting the black lion for recording guitar and vocals. I only have a 2i2 3rd gen right now, and I am curious if an upgrade would bring my audio quality to the next level. Was it worth it for you?
i have a scarlett 2i4 .... the volume knob creaks when i move it and the little headphone knob is also broken so sometimes i have no sound in the headphones. Only after about a year. Never again Focusrite for me ... My old M-audio was better. I want to test this SSL2 to last longer in time ....
I saw someone with the 2+ sending sound from their laptop to the interface/through the preamps (& back into their laptop obviously) how can I do that and do I need the 2+ to do that or will they both do it? great video, thanks.
If your starting up fam , u don’t really need a preamp , just buy the ssl interface , and you can connected to ur computer via usb, and then connect a microphone through xlr onto the interface , and from there your good to go , just make sure to turn on the 48v phantom power to make the microphone work
I am buying my first audio interface for home studio. What could be the best option for me? SSL 2+ or Focusrite 4i4, or any other you know? Which one is more compatible for guitar recording in my MacBook Air 2015 8 gb ram? Thank you!
I like both devices better when you don't have the Air switch and the 4K witch engaged. The way I have my setup for live streaming is I have a Phonic Summit 16 channel digital mixer as my interface for my DAW so I can spice up my SM7b with some Slate Digital plugins and other processing then Instead of sending my control room left & right outputs to my monitor speakers. I send the left out into channel 1 and right out into channel 2 of my Focusrite Scarlett 2i2. then in my streaming software I choose the Focusrite 2i2 as the interface for outputting my stereo DAW signal to the world. The 2 interface setup for streaming if you have a DAW with plugins is the only way to go. Before I had my setup this way I tried forever using Voice-Meter to get my plugins to be heard by my audience. Whoever made Voice-Meter really did a bad job at making the app self explanatory. Either way I could never get my DAW to output to my streaming software with Voice-Meter. The only problem with Voice-Meter is that it just doesn't work. The 2 interface setup is the only way to go.
Thanks for detailed video. I’m looking for a MIDI capable audio interface with robust preamps for playing live, hooked up with a midi controller for guitar. Multiple outputs are very welcome on stage in a live setting. I think I’ll go with the SSL2+ to me it sounds superior
I got the Focusrite, and I am hugely disapointed - the sound level (gain) gets lowered over 20 dB between what the Focusrite Driver shows, and what gets recorded in your DAW! Its horrible! Turns out it is a problem with Windows, especially Windows 11, and I have contacted Focusrite directly, and they have zero solutions other than to work in your DAW to artificially raise the gain (and so far I have found no way to get that done without distorting the sound). I will have to get a different interface.... Do any of you know if this happens with the SSL too?
Hello, i just starting watching your videos and you've helped me make a lot of decisions on items i want to buy. The question is, in one of your videos comparing the Scarlett and the Yamaha analog mixer, you replied in a comment saying "Solid state is more powerful pre-amp than Scarlett" and so i became interested in the Solid State over the Scarlett. But the problem i ran into is i would like an nondestructive interface but the solid state only has 2 XLR ins. Because i would like the option of 4 XLR ins, would you still recommend buying the Scarlett 4i4 although it doesn't have more powerful pre-amps. Any other options that don't totally break the bank? Thanks.
Thank you for showing the difference in the pre-amps. I like more the Scarlett as it’s more musical to me, has more bass and not hollow mids like the SSL2+. The specs isn’t everything. Must say though, the 4K did sound better than Air, I wish there was a Scarlett with 4K.
Good comparison. I like the way that your hand falls down on the large Monitor level control (BTW - API potentiometers) and that the cables are at the rear, out of the way. So great specs, pres, performance and ergonomics - SSL2+ for me.
Gain range seems pretty comparable there. If you already have the 2i2, do you think that it’s going to make a huge difference if we get the ssl2+? I feel like with sound reduction software, you can get over the floor sound issue
No if you have a low end interface do not upgrade with another low end interface and expect to see drastic results. An Apollo twin or antelope zen would likely be the next step up. Take note that I love SSL and own a lot of their outboard gear. I also happen to like the SSL2+ quite a lot and it’s probably the best sounding interface in that price range.
Great video. Definitely like the ssl. For me, I’m getting ready to launch a bass guitar channel, and I need to be able to run a Shure beta 52a for vocal (cus I have one) and an am 57 to mic a cabinet simultaneously. The beta 52 requires phantom power and the sm 57 does not. The ssl feature of being able to do that in a simple way that I can understand (I’m an old guy 😂) is the major feature. Also the ssl just looks like a piece of audio gear that is familiar in layout.
I’m currently shopping for one of these. I’m a guitarist looking to up my game. I don’t know if the ssl2+ is too much gear for what I’m doing. Any thoughts out there?
Honestly, the difference in specs is negligible, and in most circumstances inaudible. Was there more noticable noise on the 2i2 when it was turned up? Not to my ears. And a fairer comparison build-wise would have been the SSL 2 (not the 2+), with the 2i2, as that also only has one headphone out and no midi in/out, and is also more similar price-wise. However - it does come down to sound. The 2i2 just sounds a bit brighter in my opinion. There's a bit more body to the sound on the SSL - so fair enough - slightly better pre-amps. But the added "analogue" texture buttons on both? I don't think they are really game changers given both units offer a very clean, noise free sound with plenty of gain from their mic inputs. I think the SSL is marketing itself as a standalone unit that sits well in a working studio full of equipment; the focusrite is almost half the size and weight - so is much more portable. This comparison didn't really take into account those factors.
Thank you for that great video, you have sold me on the SSL2+. I'm almost a complete noob to audio. My space is unfortunately not very acoustic and I cannot fix it for the time being at least. My setup is going to be an RE20 with the SSL2+ recording in a foamy isolation shield/ booth box type thing . My PC has very loud fans on it so I'm thinking about getting a dedicated mini PC from amazon for like $150 just for recording audio for my voice overs and then transferring the audio file onto my main PC and working with it there. Would recording on a mini PC with audacity and then transferring the file over to my main PC have any detrimental effects on my audio? As opposed to just directly recording on my main PC with the loud fans?
Russian User's advice to you - buy a motherboard with an integrated Intel processor, forget about noise forever, system performance and compatibility are at their best, mini computers - Bad Upgrade Option! (We understand this)
Thanks, simple, understandable & shown with practical examples! If you happen to come across my comment, I've one question, I don't need RCA or Midi inputs, will it be ok to choose SSL2 instead?
Hi Kettner Creative, I am pleasantly surprised to read that you answer many comments, so maybe I get lucky: do you plan on doing any video comparing pre-amp quality and specifications with a Steinberg UR? Because I heard very good stuff about the SSL 2, but would like to see how it compares to what I already own before investing in a new sound card (particularly during these times where everything is at a stand-still for performing musicians like yours truly). I got good recordings from a UR22 under very complicated circumstances (cheap ribbon mikes that were really low output, and gain set up to maximum). I can post a link to it, it is somewhere on youtube (the violinist I was playing with posted).
Hello - thank you!!! I produce „only“ a podcast and do online teaching - using a SM7B. My company does not allow to install software on my Windows Laptop - can I use the SSL2 (no + just 1 microphone) without any additional software eg for ZOOM or MS Teams??? Got podcast I hav a macBook Thank you - Greetings from Germany
This this video has helped me a lot because I was going to go with Scarlett 2i2 but then the id4, and id14 sounded a little better but I didn't like the inputs. Behringer umc 202hd caught my eye, but I just don't feel it is up to date. I like the fact that the controls are showing like a floorboard of a guitar effects processor. I stayed away from the rack products because I don't like to do programming from the front panel. Thanks for your review.
I had ID14 as my first interface, but the adat didn't work so well and also had some other problems related to the driver. Then I tried UMC1820 with ada8200 and that worked out great. But kept thinking "behringer, behringer" it put down my confidence and had to check out comparisons and learned that the Scarlett is slightly better in sound. Back when I had to choose my first interface, ID14 was the better one over the Scarlett. So this didn't help my confidence. Then I threw away the idea of multitracking and decided to try the SSL 2+ after watching comparisons again 😂 the only thing that worries me is the output quality for processing audio. If I use the 2nd headphones out instead, will the quality then be better? 🤔
Really enjoyed your video, so I subscribed. Buying an audio interface tomorrow. Your video pushed me toward the ssl2. Sounded a bit fuller to me with your voice. 2 questions for you? What’s the headphone amp quality like? 2nd question. If you prefer one more than the other why?
I just discovered your channel and appreciate your straight forward approach to gear comparisons, keep it up! If I could ask how does that Stereo button work on the SSL? Is that something that would help with mixing in mono or is it just meant for DJ situations?
The stereo button only changes how the monitoring works. In your headphones you can choose to have channel one in the left ear and channel two in the right ear. Or, you can choose to have both channels in both ears. This won't have any effect on what is being sent to the computer for recording.
@@kettnercreative I disagree, the Focusrite has trouble pushing my DT770 Pro 80ohm cans, to the point it's basically unusable for headphone monitoring.
@@John-Perry Thats bad, a good quality audio interface should be able to drive 80ohm headphones without any issue. So far in this low-mid price range, Audient iD14 has one of the highest heaphone amp outputs.
Ssl 4K harm. dist. In low and lower mids and with the bosting around 8kh and dicret dot at the high top also boosted and dist. it ronds up the sound in to really nice US brodcast kind of flavor that we heard so often from back in the days in music, tv and movies. Listen to a singinc chorus on SSL with 4k. Scarlet by dist. slightely emphasise barely audible 40 up to 60Hz, also high fq, some mid high and it kind of harm dist. more of a mid range, but it also slightly brings the gain up, you can here it at 9 because the hf noise from 10 starts being audible when you turn the AIR on at 9 and saturation sounds like softube tube saturation. It sounds crispy and shimmery, prity nice also, it sounds like it opens up more tha ssl, but it's a trick, thats because it gains up slightly and it has more going on in mid and mid high.. bought are good. Watch the test with 500x AD conversion trough and back trough and you'll know why I like SSL.
@@kettnercreative I enjoy your videos. With so many choices out there, you really cut through all the noise (pun intended), by hitting on each aspect of the equipment and why one would be better in a given scenario over the other. For me, It's a huge help!

not to be too nit picky, but u could've had that mic stand extended up higher / gotten the mic a bit closer to your mouth. some people almost deep throat that SM7B, and the proximity effect adds more volume and a muscular deep bass but on the other hand you have quite a loud voice, so... take my comment with a grain of salt!
Tough call. People seem to complain about the proximity in a bunch of my videos wether it's close or far. With my latest videos, I try to stay a fist away to represent a middle ground. It's impossible to try and demonstrate it to everyone while making them happy.

Anyway what impresses me about the SLMK3 by Novation is that it is standalone, needs to PC and I can Record * channels of Midi directly into its sequencer and then On the Fly- control up to 32 synths- including ALL PARAMTERS and it gives 8 lanes of automation which is cool. Yeah I picked up the Modular rig on accident Kind of. I was gonna get the RD6 to Match my Td3, and of course Behringer has people on hold, STILL ( I have built an entire modular box, without one single company complaining or putting me on hold... just saying) might be why there prices are nose diving. But yeah the Tr8 is back up around 450 at sweetwater again from 300$( thats what i bought it at). any who so yeah I press this Button on my Keyboard called ''In control'' and Novation was the first and dedicated Mapped Keyboard made for Ableton. so after one presses that button, one can either flesh out what one was doing externally or go all Daw.... They updated the firmware recently to include eight seperate arpegiators., Each channel has 8 'lanes' of automation. bigger than the keystep however wayyyyyyyyy more usefull.
Great video. Which one do you recommend me to produce and mix Techno ?
. I tried Motu M2, the sound is pretty clean , do you think SSL2 could be better than the Motu one . Thx I. Advance.
Getting my SSL2+ rn!!
The other mic went straight in 'mic in' of the ssl2
In this way i can recording with 2 mics wich one was powered 46.7v (SSL) and the other was powered 47.8v (Yamaha)
And i could hear the difference.
The mic with 47.8 volt sounded far more naturel.
Thxs.. and what about latency in SSL2+ vs. Scarlet ? Which one is better?
love your video. how about the audio latency comparison when recording?
Good question. I am also interested in this because I want to monitor electric guitar I am recording with plugins
Should be fine on both. I can get 0.7 ms on 32samples on old focusrite. SSL2+ and new focusrite 3rd gen should be better.
“This one goes to 11”. That’s a This Is Spinal Tap” reference - which makes the SSL2 that much cooler. 😂
Thanks for the comment. Sorry to hear of the issues that you've had!
I saw someone with the 2+ sending sound from their laptop to the interface/through the preamps (& back into their laptop obviously) how can I do that and do I need the 2+ to do that or will they both do it? great video, thanks.
If your starting up fam , u don’t really need a preamp , just buy the ssl interface , and you can connected to ur computer via usb, and then connect a microphone through xlr onto the interface , and from there your good to go , just make sure to turn on the 48v phantom power to make the microphone work
I think he’s referring to routing digital instruments through the pre amp and sending them back to the computer
@@churricardo1457 yea, you would probably get a bit of benefit from doing that and 4k mode, it's gonna add a bit of mojo.

What could be the best option for me? SSL 2+ or Focusrite 4i4, or any other you know? Which one is more compatible for guitar recording in my MacBook Air 2015 8 gb ram? Thank you!
@Nilly Sigger his Mac is 2015...no Thunderbird yet.
100%
In your opinion, which one would be the best choice and why: scarlet 8i6 or ssl2+ ? Love your channel! :)
Thumbs Up for the SSL ;) definitely gonna buy the SLL!
Thanks.
great review!!
Great video man, straight to the point, numbers don't lie👏👏👏👏👏
I also have that doubt ,too
No if you have a low end interface do not upgrade with another low end interface and expect to see drastic results. An Apollo twin or antelope zen would likely be the next step up. Take note that I love SSL and own a lot of their outboard gear. I also happen to like the SSL2+ quite a lot and it’s probably the best sounding interface in that price range.
@@christophermonk4879 I have the scarlet solo it makes hiss noise from the volume gain , would it be good to get the ssl ?
@@10kucold23same problem here
There's no "overthinking" with the meters. Just record the loudest possible before hitting red.
It's better to shoot for the range of -12dB to -6dB
They are so similar, you aren’t going to notice a difference at all in sound. I would say the 2i2 is more user friendly though
Please compare Ssl2+ vs Yamaha Ag06. And is Ssl2+ suitable with Windows and cubase? Does it run stable?
The SSL2 has about 6db gain more, which makes a big difference for those using low sensitivity mics.
Do you guys have a comparison between SSL2+ and Presonus ioStation24c?
hello. can you review Maonocaster ?
can i use it as audio interface for recording vocals? Thanks man
Great comparison and makes the decision is a no-brainer. SSL2+ across the board. Worth the extra time to save the money.
(We understand this)
Ns1 waves plug in kills room noise
Can I use condenser mics and dynamic mics simultaneously with the 2i2? Phanton power wont affect the dynamic microphone?
For the vast majority of dynamic microphones, that is correct
Super helpful video!
Glad it was helpful!
Does the SSL2 work good with the windows 10 update cause my Focusrite seem to don't work
i had the same issue. Try reddit if you can't find the answer.
Thanks, simple, understandable & shown with practical examples!
If you happen to come across my comment, I've one question, I don't need RCA or Midi inputs, will it be ok to choose SSL2 instead?
Yes, exactly.
@@kettnercreative Thanks Jordan, you're the best.
Great video. Very informative. Thanks!
Hello - thank you!!! I produce „only“ a podcast and do online teaching - using a SM7B.

Thank you - Greetings from Germany
This this video has helped me a lot because I was going to go with Scarlett 2i2 but then the id4, and id14 sounded a little better but I didn't like the inputs. Behringer umc 202hd caught my eye, but I just don't feel it is up to date. I like the fact that the controls are showing like a floorboard of a guitar effects processor. I stayed away from the rack products because I don't like to do programming from the front panel. Thanks for your review.
Nice, glad it helped.
Damn , i had the exact process as you haha. I ended up buying the SSL2+ ^_^
Great comparison. Thank you.
Sorry, I am new to these things. May I know ssl2+ vs steinberg ur22c which one is better? Any suggestions for me?
SSL2+
Bought the SSL2+...Excellent!
Good choice!
No loopback on these units?
Thanks for the video. Very helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
Would there be any benefit connecting a external pre amp to either of these?
I've owned both and have used both with outboard mic pres for amplification + eq and compression/limiting.
11? reference to this is spinal tap?
Great comparison video. Ss2+!
Nice!
So I wouldn’t need a cloud lifter with the ssl?
Not unless you're very soft spoken.
How about the output to the headphone? Is it loud enough to hear our own vocal?
Both have very strong headphone amps.
