  • Spearfishing becomes a way of life for many enthusiastic spearos, it is adrenalin inducing and puts food on the table, but it can be life endangering. Wayne Judge shares some dive safety tips that could save your life, or the life of a mate.
    1. Always dive with a buddy 0:28
The person on the surface needs to be responsible for the person below. Making sure they aren’t blacking out or are threatened by sharks. It’s probably best to have CPR training as a dive buddy in case they do have difficulties.
    2. Learn what to do in a blackout situation 1:08
Look at our extensive video on how to handle blackouts at • Shallow Water Blackout...
It’s not a complicated process but you need to know what to do in that type of situation, it could mean your buddies life.
    3. Use a float and flag 3:05
Boats can be a huge threat to divers. They often struggle to spot divers but are more likely to spot a float and flag. Using a line to keep track of your buddy when diving deep water to keep track of your buddy.
    4. Don't tether fish to your body 5:10
Many divers have been lost to sharks going for fish tethered to their bodies and grabbing the diver. So it’s as simple as that, don’t tether a fish to your body.
There are so many variables to consider when out diving, so it’s very important to always be prepared for any situation. Train yourself, make sure your buddy is trained, have the necessary equipment and be prepared and you’ll be able to handle any situation.

i think here in the Mediterranean, they string fish around their waist
mostly bc sharks are so rare here
but i think in recent years there were more shark sightings
even one study said that some great whites have infiltrated this closed sea from the Atlantic

About tethering fish on your body, in the
Med, that’s not really a problem since no sharks, just if you have tethered an octopus on your body, eels tend to go for that (they love to eat shellfish and octopus) that’s how my dad almost lost his... junk...

Great video, but surely people do dive by themselves sometimes? Any tips? maybe just be conservative?

another tip from personal experience, if you're unsure if you can handle a fish your about to shoot for different reasons, your not experienced, or you may be on your way back up or even you dont trust your gear, then dont. loads of fish in the sea not worth risking your life over one.
