Huge props on the amount of research that went into this. I myself forgot about Serpents Kiss, so the fact you got it in the video is remarkable lmao! I hope you guys enjoyed this look into the history and lore behind these Rocket League Mechanics. Almost 2 weeks in the making this was probably one of more difficult video I've ever done. If you have video ideas you think would would like to pitch to me, let me know right here!
The thing about calling it just a "backflip flick" is it doesn't adequately describe a very important nuance of it. You can do a backflip to flick it. Not nearly as useful, but you can. You can do a backward backflip flick. The Musty requires your nose simply be pitched -90 degrees down, but is a backflip where you're right-side up at the start of the backflip while traveling forward. It's really hard to adequately name that one by mechanic description alone.
A while back I found a “mechanic” which was actually a replicable game-breaking glitch. When the f1 car debuted, you could crash the game for all players in the lobby if you did a diagonal dodge demo while using the f1 car. I talked to two psyonix devs on reddit about it and they got my game files and crash reports and swept it under the rug. A hotfix was released two days later and the glitch couldn’t be replicated. I remain without a white hat lmao
Interesting, did you save replays/footage? I would love to see the glitch. Though you wouldn't have been able to get a white hat anyways as by that time they were no longer being given out as explained in my video here: ruclips.net/video/1FL1Jkf9PlI/видео.html
@@alialshehri6722 Perhaps? He would have had to submitted it through the right channels. Also it would have to meet the criteria of a dangerous/exploitable bug (which it sounds like it might have been but we dont have all the info)
@@Rocket_Sledge I don’t think this is an instance of “white hacking.” The issue does not give the person causing the glitch any competitive advantage (If the game crashes for everyone that means no one is granted a win). Also, it’s not exploitable where players data could be compromised. This would be more like when players found out that the ball can go in through the back of the goal in the throw back stadium. Not a white hat hack, but a unintended simple glitch.
If he made a Reddit post about it, he forfeited any potential rewards in doing so. IIRC Psyonix will only reward you if you share a game breaking glitch privately.

Johnny usually has pretty good hot takes but I remember the whole collection of don't-name-a-mechanic-after-a-player rants and how ridiculous it was. Calling Kuxir pinches "quarter-field pinches" and calling that 180-backflip flip by Mognus that you saw the "Mognus flick" for literal months out of principle, because "if we can call a Musty flick a Musty flick, we can call this a Mognus flick", even though many 180-backflip flicks were scored up to that point. But I think he was just looking for a hill to die on with that whole argument.
Kuxir pinch, doomsy dish, musty flick, squishy save. You hear them so many times on RLCS broadcasts that it always seems silly to try to pretend they're not legitimate. Not to mention the fact that it's so much easier to have a single word term for something instead of describing each step that goes into the move like it's a freestyle competition lol
@@JMW566 its not a squishy save, its a ride-into-your-goal-to-the-ceiling-of-the-goal-then-make-a-save-save. ''in and out save'' also doesn't specify to new players where you go in and out and how you do that
@@JMW566 honestly, seeing these complaints is really interesting to me as someone coming from the FGC where tech is often named after a player or sometimes even a word from another language (oki is a good example). Imo, I understand trying to find a more simplistic name for newcomers, but I feel like once it becomes a mouthful, it becomes harder to describe and more confusing for newcomers. It's easier to associate a piece of tech to a term that is 1-2 words long. Especially when a more descriptive name honestly probably sounds more confusing for newer players.
I love Johnny as a caster and a pioneer of RL, but his idea that you should call mechanics something descriptive or informative is plain wrong. In football, two of the most iconic skill moves you can do are the Cruyff turn and the Maradona. We also have McGeady spin and Berbaspin, named after players too. It's a legendary achievement to have a move named after you, and frankly it's good for new players to hear these names and look them up. I'm not sure how they'd find out about a musty flick without knowing who musty is anyway.

There’s a move that the community still hasn’t give a name to. That mechanic when you drive into an opponents car head on and their car explodes. I propose that we call it “the Sledge.” I think it has a nice ring to it.
To be fair the second one (calling everything a flip reset) wasn't by his choice. That was just where the community was using the phrase and at the time he made a tutorial that went with that. Which is why he retitled it recently adding "OLD META" and even has a pinned comment explaining how the terms have changed since the video was made.
@@Rocket_Sledge it's interesting for sure. The same thing happened in my FPV drone hobby. The hobby is actually about the same age as Rocket League. Funnily enough we also call our flying 'freestyle'. One of the most popular moves is called a 'Matty' - which was named after one guy who popularized a reverse 'powerloop'. That guy got really famous in the hobby, but nothing near Musty levels. It's interesting that one trick can get tied to one person and then accepted and used by a community.
Some years ago I discovered an odd wave-dash mechanic which unpredictably changes the direction of the ball to get past your opponent. It is absurdly difficult to do and would argue not very effective in game to use as an actual mechanic and become part of the RL "META". I should probably revisit it to see what I can do with it, but it is difficult to get enough power on it. The move starts with you behind the ball, and you wave-dash diagonally in such as way where you suddenly appear next to the ball. The move appears to be over until the car turns on its side and flicks the ball in the opposite direction. This happens due to delaying your diagonal wave-dash by initially cancelling the flip, then at the last moment, let go of your directional button and the car will continue its movement by the car suddenly snapping itself sideways, popping itself up as well as hitting the ball away. If you were to perform it successfully, you could seriously fake out your opponent. But again, it'd be way too difficult, and probably a little ineffective. Another mechanic that is actually very effective which people do use, but perhaps not knowingly, is when you jump, turn your car to the left or right while in the air, and then upon landing, the direction change of your car is rapid and sudden. You could use this in place of the diagonal wave-dash cancel I mentioned above, to appear from behind the ball, land next to it, to then have the ball suddenly change direction in a more violent manner. I guess it would be like performing an instant hook shot which can really be done from any position. This mechanic can also be performed to attempt close goal-line saves as you try to catch up to the ball heading to your net. You time the jump, land slightly behind the ball facing sideways, so you can change the direction of the ball quickly.
In football, chess and skateboarding, moves are named after players all the time, I don't see the problem of this being done to rocket league. Kuxir pinch, musty flick, breezi flick etc. It adds history to the game.
It’s sad to see people who are trying to find and post possible new mechanics get downvoted immediately due to people not wanting that to sprout them into possible recognition
This is because 99% of "new mechanic" posts are flicks with a slight variation. Actual new or interesting things *do* make it on Reddit though so while it can be harsh it's mostly warranted. My contest was made with the idea that it would give people a chance to show something off with out having to get Reddit's approval though, and with it being mostly for fun I'm also looking for stuff that is not that serious.
Glad my johnny boi stan knowledge could help lol Thanks for reminding me that flipresets have been around since 2016 and I still can't hit them consistently
When I learned serpent's kiss way back in the day I learned it was the term for a 360 degree drift from the wall to the ceiling then falling off, in your example it shows what happens when you are late on switching yaw inputs or just half of a serpents kiss. I learned it was basically just using the weird curve to accelerate the 360 drift and to add some style before a ceiling shot, even still use them to this day doing serpents kiss to muirie reset kinda set ups. You can also jump after the serpent's kiss. Maybe I learned it wrong, but that was one of the first things I ever learned in Rocket League way back and hadnt been in the freestyle scene or really anything at the time. Never been corrected on it from my friends I freestyle with now, but I was under the impression when talking with other freestylers it was the 360 drift on the ceiling curve that classified it as a serpents kiss, you can see Mertzy initiate a drift and turn to one direction in your example drifting off the ceiling, it just lacks the switch to the other turning direction and reversing it that it may have evolved into, but it wasn't just a regular ceiling shot (or so I have believed it, but maybe someone else can correct me)
You are right that the first time he presented it a "360 drift" was explained as being part of the move (though he does add that the best part is the ability to have a delayed dodge). When he mentions it again in another tutorial he does seem to imply that it is the very same move as the ceiling shot that people were now doing (and doesn't mention or show the 360 this time). Here are the clips (should be time-stamped for you) 1st time: ruclips.net/video/d9Wg3Qr_Rx8/видео.html 2nd mention: ruclips.net/video/Z5YAlQL_cbc/видео.html
it's odd cuzz I knew almost all of em because some casters actually talked about weird names they used to use and are happy with the new and more logical names
i agree with johnny's opinion on named player moves, i think it's easier for someone who just started watching to understand. if you go into a scene for the first time and every time a new move happens you have to look it up, it kinda takes away the magic.
you cant call a musty flick a backflip flick, breezi flick sure but not a musty, and people saying those lengthy weird names for mechanics takes away the magic much more
Honestly that's the story behind a lot of mechanic "discoveries" as the players that become associated with it didn't necessarily do it first but instead popularized it. It's usually impossible to know if someone did it first.
Great historical research and video, just a note though the no-flip term has changed meaning again, now the flip canceling is just called flip cancel, no-flip now is used to define the wave dash freestyling genre, because they're wave dashing and not flipping, hence the name "no-flip" now makes more sense
I actually leearned ceiling shots with that exact tutorial. So when my friends asked me about that mechanic I used to say "Tarzan shot". Funny how these names have changed
I actually invented my own mechanic. Name is "Directo Shooto". In order to perform it you must miss wide open net from less then ten meters. Preferably you should hit a backboard so it will also become second mechanic: "Crossbar Challenge". At ideal conditions enemy should pick up a ball off the rebound and drive it in your net. It is the third mechanic - "Great Passu".
Only knew air drag because of one of my fav training packs. Never been able to make the connection til your video! Cool to know that’s why it’s named, must be old. Or made by a vet
Also, maybe an honorable mention for something like the musty flick could've been both the Doomsy Dish (the out to in as I always called it), the Kuxir pinch and the Breezy flick.
i still call certain ceiling shots a tarzan shot.. only when the car really gets under the ball and sort of scoops the ball.. thats the only time i refer to it as a tarzan swing or shot.
I've never understood being annoyed at naming moves after players. Sure, if it was really forced, but if the community widely adopts it then it becomes forced and confusing to call it anything else. Especially true when the non-player name version is either a mouthful to say, or is not specific enough to be a good description (like backflip flick for a musty flick). I doubt having a few moves named after players actually puts many people off, it's really not hard to learn when the names are repeated often enough, and it can help immortalise legendary players. I don't think anyone gets put off football because a certain type of penalty is named after Antonín Panenka!
@@reubenkimber i used to like him but this vid left me rethinking... idk why i find it so annoying/offputting but like nobody acts like that and legitimately refuses to call something its given name simply because they don't want to XD just seems childish af in my opinion
Thank u for confirming my sanity. I didnt realize the term air drag came from the previous game cuz I called it that at the beginning of rocket league but never played sarpbc. Thought I was crazy after a few years when everyone called it air dribble.
I did think of that one, but what do we even call it now? Is it just a dish? It feels like a rare move that's hardly talked about. And I think a decent number still use the name. Good idea though.
I made up my own flick i call it the rill flick its like a breezi mixed with a musty and it always goes into the top corner and thats whats special about.. and its always go super fast for some reason.
I remember years ago, when the ball hit the corner at the top of the backboard and instead of bouncing out it rolled down the backboard infront of the goal. People used to call it the waterfall. So stupid lol
I haven't looked much into this yet but the dates don't make sense. The air dash was found in January 2017 and only existed for a few days. Linkuru's training pack challenge was April 2019 so I'm not sure how it would be related.
Its funny: i still use air drag to this day when talking about a really fine ground to air dribble (huh, called it an air dribble) I suppose to me an air drag is just a variation of the air dribble
I myself am trash at the game called "Rocket League" as it takes a lot of skill and time, which I could put in and have but have seen little success having only reached to c2 at my peak and currently c1 as we speak. Hopeful I can get better but with have the mechanics work it is HIGHLY unlikely. However there is always hope!
I'll take that as a compliment. Though I would add that I have done many other similar historical/story videos over the years so this isn't a first for me.
He didn't make it, he just had one of the first videos that popularized it. Musty has said this himself when people have brought it up in past reddit posts. I believe he said he had seen other people doing it higher ranked lobbies but realized it hadn't been talked about much on RUclips at the time. That's a good example of how a name can get attached to a mechanic even though someone has no actual role in it's creation. You're not alone though. If I remember correctly I'm pretty sure it was Linkuru that actually did the first video on the concept but even he didn't claim to be the "creator".

Here are the clips (should be time-stamped for you)

@@Rocket_Sledge that's super interesting to find out! Thanks for finding it out and doing the research on it! Loved the video man
wow sledge! this is an absolutely amazing video! keep up the good work, buddy! :D
Thanks, will do!
I'd use 'air drag' just so that I could say "dragging these balls across your face" when they ask me what exactly I'm dragging
10:50 kuxir pinch, squishy save, breezi flick, athena flick
Fyshokid is a SARPBC vet and has great footage of alpha gameplay on his channel. Highly recommend since detailed alpha gameplay is rare to see.
Yea him and Linkuru both have some great early footage.
it's odd cuzz I knew almost all of em because some casters actually talked about weird names they used to use and are happy with the new and more logical names
man I remember calling it the tarzan swing like 5 years ago lmao
Lets all just take a minute to appreciate the amount of time and effort that sledge put into this video and all his other ones
Love you sledge keep it up
Thanks, no promises!
i agree with johnny's opinion on named player moves, i think it's easier for someone who just started watching to understand.
if you go into a scene for the first time and every time a new move happens you have to look it up, it kinda takes away the magic.
you cant call a musty flick a backflip flick, breezi flick sure but not a musty, and people saying those lengthy weird names for mechanics takes away the magic much more
The musty flick lowkey makes me mad cause I also discovered it on my own as a gold in freeplay only to find out I was too late
Honestly that's the story behind a lot of mechanic "discoveries" as the players that become associated with it didn't necessarily do it first but instead popularized it. It's usually impossible to know if someone did it first.
Personally I think it's 100% okay to names moves after players in other communities most notably speedrunner communities they do this all the time.
agreed.
Johnnyboy being just jealous
Wow this really cool learning the back story of the mechanics
Great historical research and video, just a note though the no-flip term has changed meaning again, now the flip canceling is just called flip cancel, no-flip now is used to define the wave dash freestyling genre, because they're wave dashing and not flipping, hence the name "no-flip" now makes more sense
damn freestylers! how am I supposed to keep up with all this!
@@Rocket_Sledge it's going places 😂
Banger of a video. Mind blowing
I actually leearned ceiling shots with that exact tutorial. So when my friends asked me about that mechanic I used to say "Tarzan shot". Funny how these names have changed
Never heard my name butchered this badly
I'm sorry, I cannot say your name properly. If you can believe it this is my BEST try at it. Can I blame it on my bad-Canadian english?
@@Rocket_Sledge yes
you can call the musty flick the 180 backflip flick, but you can also call the half cab a fakie 180
Tarzan swing OP
Thanks for the history 🤓
how do i submit the clips?should i submit on the form on the prrof text the link?
Yes, youtube videos/gif your game links, even just a google drive link with your clips uploaded. All will work.
Also, maybe an honorable mention for something like the musty flick could've been both the Doomsy Dish (the out to in as I always called it), the Kuxir pinch and the Breezy flick.
My guess for the Tarzan swing would’ve been something close to a musty flick.
The Kuxir pinch will never lose its number one seat to the wall pinch.
Now I've done a reverse half-flip which is something my buddy has never seen and he's been playing the game for quite some time.
Very big fan of Sting. I watch his streams every day.
i still call certain ceiling shots a tarzan shot.. only when the car really gets under the ball and sort of scoops the ball.. thats the only time i refer to it as a tarzan swing or shot.
This is Jonny though. I personally don't like him and his personality and things like this don't help it lol. Something about him man
@@reubenkimber i used to like him but this vid left me rethinking... idk why i find it so annoying/offputting but like nobody acts like that and legitimately refuses to call something its given name simply because they don't want to XD just seems childish af in my opinion
i just know that section at 0:24 took absolutely forever for you to render
It was huge pain you are correct lol. I've at least made use of it twice for the intros of different videos so that is nice.
Thank u for confirming my sanity. I didnt realize the term air drag came from the previous game cuz I called it that at the beginning of rocket league but never played sarpbc. Thought I was crazy after a few years when everyone called it air dribble.
Hope yall have an awesome day!!!
I actually got the Tarzan swing right. Such a weird name though
i have a pole pinch which is pinching the ball on the opponents net to give extra speed as it goes in
Surprised I didn’t hear the Doomsee Dish in here it is rarely used anymore.
HI SLEDGE! i do actually have a mechanic called the Waffle Flick. video of it drops tomorrow so stay tuned!
commentary on the kuxir pinch may have also been interesting
I remember years ago, when the ball hit the corner at the top of the backboard and instead of bouncing out it rolled down the backboard infront of the goal. People used to call it the waterfall. So stupid lol
Honestly I still say "it's going to waterfall..."
@@Rocket_Sledge haha whatever suits ya I guess. I think I'd usually say bouncing down or something
Just so everyone is aware, Rocket Sledge is the best RL content creator.
First I'm hearing of this. Sounds fake tbh.
Nice vid 👍
I made a mechanic called being bad, it’s where you stay and in high diamond for over a year
Johnny: We shouldn't name moves after players.
League of Legends has entered the chat.
Imagine the rl casters saying ‘Squishy now with the tarzan swing’
Oof musty, “technically a professional player is rough”
The air dash led to linkuru's training pack challenge which later transformed into the speedflip we know today.
I haven't looked much into this yet but the dates don't make sense. The air dash was found in January 2017 and only existed for a few days. Linkuru's training pack challenge was April 2019 so I'm not sure how it would be related.
I agree with Johnny. I’ll call it the back flip flick but he needs a better name for a breezy
Fun Fact: I found out about the "Lix Jump" in 2016 but I was new to xbox and didnt know how to clip anything
my guesses:
air drag: air dribble
tarzan swing: double tap
flip restore: flip reset
the old no flip: wave dash
not bad!
My mechanic is I lose 4 games in a row and then play Minecraft for 5-7 hours
OMG I remember Tarzan swings and air drags lol
Its funny: i still use air drag to this day when talking about a really fine ground to air dribble (huh, called it an air dribble)
I suppose to me an air drag is just a variation of the air dribble
Imagine rl cancelled flip resets when they first were used
I myself am trash at the game called "Rocket League" as it takes a lot of skill and time, which I could put in and have but have seen little success having only reached to c2 at my peak and currently c1 as we speak. Hopeful I can get better but with have the mechanics work it is HIGHLY unlikely. However there is always hope!
the musty part is something i would expect from sunless
I'll take that as a compliment. Though I would add that I have done many other similar historical/story videos over the years so this isn't a first for me.
Flip restore>flip reset>flippery set
2:16 BRO WHAT IS THAT CAR
Fun fact: A pinch was called a "Scuba dive"
i thought airdrags were still a thing
i started playing in 2017, and i used to say air drag, its still valid today right?
What about the seal flick?
im so glad that people dont call ceiling shots "tarzan swings" only a toddler would think thats a good name
Did "no-flip"/"flip cancel" used to be called a stall? That is what I have called it this whole time.
My main takeaway from this is that RLCS casters are real Gs and listen to the opinions of the community
Musty would of got recognition anyway as he also made the speed flip which pays a massive part in rocket league today
he didnt make it, he was just one of the very first to make a tutorial on it
He didn't make it, he just had one of the first videos that popularized it.
