I'm subbed to various painting channels (they are great btw, so I'm not dissing them), but yours just really helped me. And I know this will come in handy too as I still sometimes struggle with good consistency.

    As a visual learner this was great. I struggle to actually make glazes and seeing seeing how opacity sits on the white is a great reference. I've been over watering so it won't stick properly but seems thin enough. That'll change now hipefully

    Great video! I wish I'd known this when I started painting. I eventually worked this out on my own, but before that I used to try pre-mixing paint with water or medium and it's just terrible. I really like how you show a range of consistencies. One of the best paint thinning tutorials I've seen.

  • @pcassar31
    @pcassar31 2 года назад

    Thanks Juan! I came across your video as I was finding it extremely difficult to thin down the paints when layering, I'll have a go at using distilled water too.

  • @izzydarkhart4144
    @izzydarkhart4144 2 месяца назад

    I made the change from water to medium and liked it a lot more. It was easier for me to get fixed consistency with the ratios. Only downside is that not all brands are created equally and not all mediums and paint mix together well. When in doubt, use the paints brand of mediums for there stuff. I have heard a lot of RUclipsrs say medium is just medium and does not matter but it does. The wrong medium will completely change the consistency of the paint.

    But really awesome video and thanks for calling out a common trap people fall for all the time. As someone who has multiple paint lines I work from, having people not realizing each one requires different amounts of thinning to work right just drives me nuts. So I really appreciated you throwing that in while explaining the do's and don'ts. Keep up the awesome videos.

    I'm offended and appalled by the click bait thumbnail and out of sheer spite I'm watching the whole video , I hope you're proud of yourself there Mr. Hidalgo 😏. On a serious note, I normally achieve an acceptable consistency on my wet palette at first but since I'm a slow painter by the time I either have to touch up mistakes or layer over washes , the consistency turns into an extreme version of glazing which required upwards of 5 coats to get the vibrancy back and I usually develop unwanted textures due to impatiently applying more coats quickly to speed up the process. Simple video but well explained thank you !

    The only issue I have with this type of thinning on the wet palette (which I agree is better) is where I live is hot so the air con is on a lot and the dry cool air dries the thinned paint quickly even on the wet palette.

    My biggest mistake that I need to adjust is using those cheese pallets with bowls. They are only ment to hold a few ml of paint but there is no surface area to drag out the paint and control how thin it goes. Pretty much an all or nothing. Other than that I love the 4 thinned side by sides as this gives us a very nice visual of what we mean by thin, to glaze

      You don't need it, but use it if you find water to be too difficult
