  • I had a set back. The paint on my one fender spider cracked through one section of the fender. I am disappointed but undaunted in my effort to get this done. You painters out there, what do you think happened?

I had a similar problem painting the front facia of my 87 Choo Choo El Camino. After talking with my paint supply house contact, I went with an epoxy primer as a base, high build urethane primer for sanding to level everything out and then finally a sealer over that. Then I laid down the basecoat and then the clear. No mapping issues after that. Hope this helps.

I love that term....mapping. That describes it perfectly. Thank you for the advice!

As a painter i never wipe/tac in circular motions...str8 lines and fold to fresh next pass. One of the first things that came to mind is how cold was it since you were bundled up. I have never sanded basecoat before applying the clear. Keep the chemical bond over physical.

Dually noted. Straight lines with tack cloth. I did the wet sanding based on what I have seen in RUclips. I experimented both ways and honestly, I couldn’t tell the difference with the finished product. If it isn’t 80 I’m wearing a sweatshirt…lol. It was probably in the 70s. What brand gun do you use?

I've had issue using that SEM etching primer on my radiator support. I get that krinkle crap after putting a top coat on. I'm working on the engine bay of my 73 Grand Am with the motor out. Its taking me WAY to long to get it all back together.

The time thing is why I am glad I didn't take more of my car apart. It's a slippery slope.
