That lens is the DR, not rigid (same optics though, but even better built and can close focus to 0.5m with the goggles). If you like the optics but not the weight, the rigid weights less 150g or so. Great lens, one of my favorites too! Looking forward for more videos!
This was my next question, mine is the DR and I was confused about rigid vs DR vs collapsible :) Glad I ended up with the DR (and a collapsible). If I was worried about weight I would use an iPhone :)
The Summicron 50DR may not be THE best optically if compared to the recent unaffordable APO ASPHs but, being a bit moody wide open, tack sharp at f4, f5.6 ... with two focus ranges, it’s certainly the most versatile. And it’s a great performer overall, a mechanical masterpiece and a lot of fun! Thanks very much for the lovely video; I love those costal places in the rain. :-)
Great video! Savage shooting in the rain! Yes, the Summicron Rigid is the best. Your DR is second best, because it uses the same optical block as the Rigid. .... so the DR is basically the same lens as a Rigid, but the DR can focus closer.
This is a Leica Dual Rangę, and not a Rigid. As I found out the hard way, Dual Range Summicrons are not compatible with Leica digital Ms. So if you have an M8 or newer and want a Summicron 50mm Type II, get a Rigid.
I always carry a chamois leather in my bag to cover my camera in wet conditions. Nice shots. The Summicron 50 is one of the best Leica lenses ever made. Keep it!
That is a smart move and I might need to get that for the future too. Definitely a great lens and looking forward to using it for a long time. Thank you for the feedback and glad you enjoyed! :)
The photos look dope! That lens is a legend for a reason. I have the next version of the 50mm Summicron, which is pretty much identical to yours. I think it's my favourite lens ever made. Those pre-aspherical Summicrons have some magic to them, for sure.
Great shots, I love the last ones (lesser light and more "moody""). I just wanted to say to anyone reading this: be aware that older Leica lenses, like this DR, are prone to having some growth inside (fungus) which greatly alter contrast/sharpness and cannot always be CLA'd. My own experience: I bought that same lens you have there with the matching goggles (which enable the lens to focus down to 4.5cm. Without the goggles, the mini focus dist is 1m....) knowing there was a little fungus inside. I sent it off to two Leica shops (one is official and the other is reknown third party): they both said that the growth happened to be between two unseperable lens elements and therefore the lens became useless ....... If you do find one in good condition, it's probably a great lens but I personnaly will keep away from older lenses .....
It’s probably not the best Leica lens, but that’s not why we are here, right? (It’s still a very nice lens) Love the look of your pictures and the over exposure was spot on! Nicely done, glad to see you using film. Jersey shore has a lot to see and winter at the beach is always worth it! 📸
Very nice video! When it rains the colours get soft, good light to shoot. What you call ‘hay’ is marram gress in norwegian. Planted in dunes to keep the sand in place, having very long roots. We have lots of it here on the Dutch coast.
Hi Jan, I did not know the backstory of the "hay" :) Was really enjoying the weather and especially how the colors were. Thanks so much for the info and glad you enjoyed the video :)
How do you feel about the no focus tab ? I'd love to read your thoughts about this. Also, any rangefinder blockage? If so are you considering external rangefinder?
Stephen Greico I mean, we could have this argument all you want. That’s my old neighborhood though. It was simply a small portion of a single neighborhood outside of downtown. I wasn’t planning on grabbing a tent and living in CHAZ or anything, but it’s clearly not like it’s the entire city :)
Actually I think the 28mm f1.4 is the best manual focus lens in the world, and the 28mm f1.7 autofocus lens with macro on the Q is the best autofocus lens in the world.
Hi Mark, thanks for watching and glad you enjoyed! That's correct, I metered at 400 and processed at 800 which I marked on my roll as I gave to my lab. :)
I got a friend of mine who want to sale his LEICA M6 NONE TTL black body for £500.00 to Me and is not been used for a long time and to buy one of these LEICA 50MM F 2 Lens you need over £1.500 to as much as £2.000 or so to buy it
Do you really think that a 25 year-old lens can be the best Leica lens ?? I had this guy and changed it for a 50 summilux. And if I had enough money, I'd have bought the real best 50 M lens : the summicron 50 AA. By the way "summicron" means F2 in Leica langage. No need to specify the aperture.
Hi Marc, to answer your question - no, I don't think this is the best Leica lens. In fact, I think the best lens is very subjective and this one isn't the best lens even for me. Didn't know that about the terminology but appreciate you providing that info, good to know and hope you enjoyed the video :)

I have and use both the Rigid Summicron as well as the Summitar (made in 1951) and both are outstanding!
That's incredible. There are so many incredible lenses for Leicas, but so little time and resources :)

Haha! True true. Thanks for watching man, hope you enjoyed the vid! :)
Stunning pictures ! Whats the Leather strap you got on your m6?
Thanks so much man. It's called Sevilla by Ona

Beautiful compositions!
These are very beautiful shots. Thank you. Video was great too.
Thank you very much Michael, appreciate your kind feedback :)
The lens in your video is called the Dual Range DR, the Rigid does not have the capability for short focus. Both do have the same optical design...!
This is a Leica Dual Rangę, and not a Rigid. As I found out the hard way, Dual Range Summicrons are not compatible with Leica digital Ms. So if you have an M8 or newer and want a Summicron 50mm Type II, get a Rigid.
Nice one. That hay stuff does look great in your photos.

Love the shots, love the Leica, LOVE Seaside Heights! Location is well chosen. Well done!
Thank you so much! Really appreciate it, and very glad to hear you enjoyed the film :)
What’s the music?
Nice series of pics
You should get the thing that you put ontop to focus until 0.49m, it really is awesome.
That sounds very interesting, have to look into that. Thanks for the tip!
Great video, I have the same lens here really love it even put it on those modern cameras it can still make you surprised 😀
Thank you very much! That's so cool you got the same lens. It's a great one and hoping it will last for a long time :)
Great shots and an amazing place. Definitely need to drop by that place next time I am in NY
Thanks so much, appreciate the feedback and glad you enjoyed! Definitely go check that out if you are in the area :)
Great work my friend, particularly love the last images into the night 😍
Thanks so much Alex! Liked those too and happy how they turned out considering the light and the amount of water on my camera. 😊
very nice video!! The rigid is a nice keeper works great on my M8 and M9P

Awesome video. M6 is probably the best camera ever made. Making me want to get a 50mm.
Thank you so much! Glad to hear you enjoyed the video and I agree M6 is a keeper :)
I thought the same until I got M3 in my hands...all the talk about its smoothness is no-bullshit.

saving money for the summicron 50 at the moment. not sure if I would like to have a used old one or a new one for 2.2k euro.
Well that was extremely enjoyable, thanks Joel!

Bro, come to Seattle. We’ll test it against the Summilux 🙌🏼
Let's go! Would love that and actually been planning to visit :)
Nobody wants to got to Seattle anymore lol
Stephen Greico nah, Seattle is still the best.

Really fun vid. Killing it
Thank you!
Nice video, just ordered a Summicron 50mm F2 from 1961. What film canister is this that you are using to keep your 35mm films?
Very nice! That’s a great glass if it’s in shape. I bought the roll case from B&H for $15 and it’s been a great to have!
how did you keep camera dry?
Tried my best with the umbrella but it got some water anyway. Dried well right after :)
I genuinely enjoyed this.
Thank you so much Damian, really glad to hear that and appreciate you taking the time to give feedback :)
Really enjoyed this!!
Thank you very much! Glad to hear you enjoyed it 😊
Beautiful images and presentation!!👍
Thank you very much Jason. Appreciate the kind words and glad you enjoyed!
What did you use for audio? Sounds good.
Thanks! It's Røde wireless lav mic. Not mine but I think I need one of those :)
nice vid, i love how excited you are in the rain ; )
Haha! Had to make the best out of it! Thanks for watching and stoked you enjoyed. :)
Would love to see this video shooting a Jupiter 8
So beautiful video 😍
Nice video and a very nice lens, but it’s not the so-called “rigid,” but the dual-range, usually called the DR.
Thanks so much and I quickly learned that the name indeed was incorrect. Glad you enjoyed the video!
Wow dude! great video, great photography. You have me subscribed :)
Thanks so much Gustav! Glad you enjoyed and hope you like what's coming :)
Are you shooting film only or even digital? And if, which brand?
I shoot both, digital for profession and film for personal at this point. Canon is my choice for digi.
Btw its not rigid, it's the DR dual range, cause you have the bearing ball above the lens for the goggles correction of the M3.
Hi Bryan, that is new info for me, so thanks for updating me. Hope you enjoyed the video regardless :)
@@joelhypponen I have enjoyed the video and keep up the good work.
For me the summilux 50mm 1.4 is my favorite That I have since the chromatic aberration doesn’t exist on this lens it does
Would love to try that one. Have only heard great things about it!
Is your rigid version 1 or version 2 ?
Nice video. I just picked up an M3 with both the rigid and collapsible. What film did you use here? Did you push/pull or shoot it as rated?
Thanks so much Chris. You are in it for some good times and hope you have a blast shooting! In the video I pushed a stop and shot Portra 800.
Actually I think the 28mm f1.4 is the best manual focus lens in the world, and the 28mm f1.7 autofocus lens with macro on the Q is the best autofocus lens in the world.

@@joelhypponen Thanks for responding, so did they pull it back one stop? The colors are beautiful!
Noctilux! But great video!
Hah, thank you for watching Frank and glad you enjoyed :)
Are these images cropped? They dont look like 3:2
Yeah they are, not a fan of 3:2 especially in verticals but training my eye to think otherwise
is the rigid better than the dual ?
Hi Gaius, have not tried both yet so unfortunately, don't have a stand on that. Hope you enjoyed the video :)
if it’s still helpful, they have the same optics, so unless you want to use the closer focusing, they’re virtually the same
Great review. One point of accuracy though- that’s a DR not a rigid.
Thanks for the correction Dean, figured that based on many people pointing that out! Learned that quickly :)
Love my 50DR, works even better with a lens tab
Nice! Haven't tried that but sounds awesome :)
Why all the photos are 6x7 ratio?
Just a personal preference originally, an old habit that I'm trying to kick out slowly but surely. :)
Whey are the frames not actually 35mm format
Not a huge fan of 2:3 especially in vertical images
Great video
Thank you Tom, appreciate the kind feedback and thanks for watching! :)
If you meant the best 50mm, you could be right, nice video
You are correct, and thank you - glad you enjoyed the video Carlos!
