  • Final moments of Melbourne radio station 3XY. It's transmitter was turned off at 1pm on September 23, 1991... ending 56 years of broadcasting.
It was the first time a capital city radio station had been removed from the airwaves.
Its new owners AWA Media Pty Ltd made the decision to close 3XY down so it could relocate studios from Geelong back to Melbourne and relaunch the station under a new name and call sign 3EE The Breeze 693. (later Magic 1278 which is now Talking Lifestyle).
After the final song played from the studio at Midday, a pre-recorded tape prepared by the Department of Communication went to air hosted by rock historian Glenn A. Baker.

I'll never forget 3XY, I used to tape the Top 40 every Saturday in 1985-1986. 3XY was the only station that played 12" extended mixes. 3XY was awesome.

I used to listen to 3XY during my teenage years and listening to the Saturday top 40. I think I still got some of the paper charts that could be picked from most record stores listing the singles and albums, so I roughly knew when the songs were coming on so I could record them to cassette. Also the XY-ZOO breakfast show was a great laugh. Thanks for this video.

Because 3XY was such a dominant force in Aussie radio in the 70s, it deserved a big, proper farewell.

Such a pity to loose an iconic station like 3XY

So sad, very moving. I have heard this before but it still hits home. A reminder too of how quickly things can change. Only a decade earlier, 3XY was still the Number One station in Melbourne. When I think of Melbourne, I always think of 3XY.

I remember being a regular listener to 3XY through the 80's from my home town in Western QLD at night, it was a great station and sad to see it go.

"I'll Be Gone " was also the last song played by 3AK "Where No Wrinklies Fly" station when it dropped rock music and went to "beautiful music" in the early '70s.

It is so eery, hearing a station being so alive and having been around for so long, then just shutting down like that. It is really quite spooky, like somebody dying.
I am a massive fan of Magic 1278 though.

I remember hearing this. I was working in Melbourne CBD at the time. 3XY was a great station. In my younger days, I lived up in Sydney and at nights, 3XY was always well received there.

i remember this... it changed to 3EE... the 1990s was a decade of changes... it threw tradition to the wind... not just at 3xy but many AM radio stations.... a lot of listeners were also thrown to the wayside of stations as well....as they tried to reinvent themselves by new identities... it took them a long time to recover... some didnt including 3EE... as they ditched their listening base & their heritage for a new identity...

    Never knew about 3xy's past
But discovered it this year as radio Hellas on 1422AM at night listening from Auckland New Zealand.
So I guess they had listeners from NZ before it closed down and changed to what it is now.

I live In rural Victoria (Ouyen) & our town has only just got access to FM commercial radio for the very first time with the commencement of Flow FM on 22/12/15, 3XY was a fantastic station I would listen to it often when I was living In Melbourne but I was also a EON FM (Now Triple M) & FOX FM listener. I started In community radio back In 1991 & was saddened to hear about the demise of a once great radio station but you must admit music sounds much better on FM.

I did not realise 3XY had closed down ...now live in Qld which might explain it perhaps..Good station ..used to laugh all morning when Rick Melbourne did the morning show in the late 60's early 70's (still remember Rick's "3XY.. 3XY ..get out of bed.you sleepy head, it's a wonderful day outside " promo.
