Steely Dan Y2K Rehearsals

  • Steely Dan rehearsing at Sony for the upcoming Y2K tour. Then it looks like rehearsals for VH1 Storytellers.
Edit: thanks to Pete Fogel we have more intel on the tape “These are not the rehearsals for the summer tour. These are the rehearsals for the filming of the Sony Studios shows. (PBS special)
First part is at SIR -West 52nd St. NYC. The second part is at Sony Studios on Tenth Ave. This was all filmed right in the middle of the Jazz/Plush documentary so, I was at all of these tapings. January, 2000”
This video is a treat because we also get to look through Roger's eyes, and of course he filmed the console and his mic placement. ha.
Could you imagine having a band like Steely Dan that spent years in the studio and have to figure out how to bring it to the people live. After The Steely Dan Band disbanded (Pretzel Logic?) they retreated to the studio creating some of the most exhilaratingly complex and technically masterful albums. Not that the Steely Dan Band wasn't great, because it was (Love you Skunk and Denny! ) BUT it was different, in my opinion.
Kudos to all the amazing musicians and dad that figured out how to bring the Steely Dan Sound to a live audience. That Y2K Tour looked so awesome (I was there a few times, I was kinda a wild teen sorry family!)
ALSO if you would like to support our efforts get your drum samples and EQ articles here! We are excited to hear what you make with them.

*A Brush with Fame Down Memory Lane:* That black saxophonist with the big beard is named Corny Bumpus. I used to play little $10 coffee shop gigs with him playing jazz standards - guitar and sax/flute duos. It was obvious to everybody that he was by far the most talented musician in town but he was humble and super nice and supportive to everybody including me. Usually talent and human warmth and compassion are inversely proportional but he had both in copious quantities. It didn't surprise me at all when he got so successful and it was a tragedy when he died young of some medical condition. As I recall he didn't drink or do drugs. At one point he had a local band called Corny & the Corvettes. He was the kind of person that gives you faith in humanity.

@@iamcimcie No problem with that at all; as someone who just knew music from a really early age and has never taken a music theory or instrument lesson in my life, I know that music and sound has the most powerful properties of any force on this planet. For starters, what other artform can elicit such a wide range of emotions?
Things like Chladni plate experiments simply can't lie. Prayer bowls exist for a reason. The original vibration of the universe is a discernible note, and listening to binaural beats is shown to improve one's mood.

If seized about the nostril by the post modern police and forced to disclose a meaning to all this Blair Witchery I would declare it to be a celebration of the joy that comes to persons of good musical will while moving from one delicious chord to another secure in their timbral and rhythmic underpinnings. That glowing interviewer knows he's in the midst of something special, and how about a kiss for the boom mic operator dude holding it aloft for all those long minutes? Or, wait. Is that the simple message, holding something aloft, despite everything? I'll salute that. Thanks.
