Her name is Bronwyn and she's a Welsh Terrier and she likes other dogs, if she and Penny ever want to fight crime together or something

I have a miniature Dotson and she saw penny on my computer screen and got super happy lol! but you're absolutely right about everything you said about dotsons. especially the needy part. plus mine loooves to burrow under blankets and stuff like that.

Wait don't get a Lab as a first dog...they can be so wild, and their size doesn't help with controlling them at all lol. Also I'd recommend adopting vs. buying from a breeder. :^) Also, Penny is so smart! She reminds me of our old dachshund, Pumpkin, with all of her tricks and personality.

Shelters have a variety of dogs with a variety of temperaments, and they're not all gonna be "wild and unpredictable." And yes, Labs have a ton of energy, so unless you know what to expect, I wouldn't recommend getting one as a first pet. I'm not hating on Labs, I actually own a Lab/Retriever/who-knows-what-else dog that we adopted from a shelter lmfao. Also, if you are so familiar with dogs, I assume you know how harmful breeders and breeding can be? And the gross history of dog breeding? Also, I assume you know how many dogs are currently in shelters waiting to be euthanized because everyone wants shiny, new puppies instead of old, abandoned dogs. And I realize I'm writing a soapbox essay right now, but let me also point out how many of these shiny, new puppies are tossed onto the streets when their owners realize they have no idea how the fuck to raise a dog with a wilder/energetic temperament.

My aunts have two dachshunds and they fit all the general things you said about them. They have SUPER separation anxiety to the point one of them won't eat his breakfast or dinner if one of their mommies isn't home, they bark at everything (and once one hears the other, they start barking too with no idea what they're barking at), and they've been really hard to train. There's another family relative who also has a dachshund and she will actually devour any stuffed/soft toy. Not just tear it apart, but actually eat all of the stuffing.

She has Epilepsy, Axonopathy and Polymyositis and she's only ~7 years old. The Epilepsy is controlled with pills, but before that, it was heartbreaking to watch her have a seizure. Because of the other two she can barely walk so I have to take her to do everything. At least she barks to let me know when she wants something :) I know someday, when her quality of life isn't that good, I'll have to put her down, and that thought scares me to death, because I don't think I'll be able to handle it. She's is the only thing I have left... :(

Go to a vet clinic and ask the nurses about potential breeds and breeders if you're looking in that direction as you can discuss what your desires are for a dog and what you can offer space and time wise! Also good to consider any potential genetic problems as purebreds are shocking!! This may save you more money in the future :) Pounds are always a nice place to start, try and get a mix breed if you can!
My pug escaped his kennel once. Out of all the things he could eat or destroy, he descovered some rat poison. Luckily it was like 5 years expired, but he was still very sick for a week.
Our dog (Named Gaga, we did not name her) refuses to eat dog food or dog treats of any kind or brand. she only eats people food and sometimes cat food. My sister has been teaching her tricks by giving her pepperoni slices (her favorite treat). She can walk for it, jump, spin, sit, and sit still while we give her the treat. Still trying to get her to roll over and speak.
Absolutely not true of every breed. I have friends that free feed their corgi and he's a healthy weight and never makes himself sick. Dachshunds are just very fragile and too much weight gain literally be a death sentence so I won't even try it.
+Meg Turney Very true! My dad is a vet and I always had a bull terrier growing up. We always left food out and weight gain was never a problem. It's also a matter of how many dogs you have. At my mom's house we have 5 dogs, two of them are a Weimaraner and a Shepard mix. Trying to feed those breeds at specific times would be a nightmare, let alone juggling the other dogs away.
I have a German Shepherd and we keep her food bowl full at all times. she regulates herself very well and exercises every day. My dad has bread and trained dogs his whole life so he knew what he was doing. If you have multiple dogs I totally agree, because it will become a competition and a dominance thing. But our dog is at the perfect weight and does just fine with an always full food bowl. We usually only have to feed her one to two times a day. We do the same with my cat, and sense he's outdoor/indoor, he exercises enough to stay a good weight too. Honestly the only one in our house who has a bad time regulating themselves with their food is my fat ass XP
