The Story of World 4 Kids & Toys R Us Australia

  • As one toy retailer had put it, "[Toys R Us and World 4 Kids] thought they could walk into the toy market and crush the little guys - they were wrong". In the early 1990s, an American toy retail pioneer and an Australian retail titan went into a scrap for control over the Australian toy industry. However, things wouldn’t be what they seemed. Join me as I look at how Toys R Us and World 4 Kids made their mark on the toy retail landscape in Australia.

You've got a real ear for music. A couple of tracks I've been curious about. That new intro music is simply elegant and beautiful. Still the most under-rated channel I've found. I've always wondered what happened to World4kids

Yep I remember when both opened in Chatswood in the 90's. My young daughter at the time definitely benefited from having these huge toy stores around. I sorta miss them as was an interesting shopping experience for the whole family but obviously the Australian market was just too small to make a profit.

I used to work at Toys R Us Penrith. Was such a fun job and a great place to be. Unfortunately, the seasonal nature of the Australian toy industry meaning summer and Christmas double up meant that as a casual employee, you’d sometimes go weeks without a shift throughout the year cause they couldn’t afford to put more than a few people on at once. I seriously loved the place but it was very obvious even to my teenage self they weren’t sustainable

I spent a few years of my childhood in the US so I had the Toys R Us birthday shops. That feeling of aisle after aisle further than you could see of toys. Being a kid and looking up and seeing a wall that seemed to go on forever of the franchise you were into at the time. I remember looking up and seeing all these Polly Pockets I had never even seen before. The only time that didn't happen was when Power Rangers was in full swing. The PR aisle was just empty pegs and yellow boards. They had two toys on the shelf in that entire aisle. Thankfully one of them was Kimberly so I was happy.
I did go into a World 4 Kids once in 2001. I would say it would have been Chatswood. I don't really remember too much about it. They had Wedding Singer on VHS which is what I wanted.

Great video! I have fond memories of World 4 Kids in 1994, I believe it was the one in Clayton in Victoria, and I went there on opening night and I remember how magical it all felt, it was truly wonderful. I am actually shocked to learn how much World 4 Kids and Toys R Us lost over their years of operation, and yet it is sad to see them go.
Would you be interested in covering All-you-can-eat restaurants? I feel like they're a relic from the past now. Smorgy's in Melbourne was a big one, as well as when Pizza Hut was All-you-can-eat, and I believe there is only one left like that in Ballarat.

Vaguely remember being a Toys R Us at Liverpool where you would send a trolley up and down dedicated escalators to a upper level .
There was also a World 4 Kids at Campbelltown that turned into a Baby Target and then a regular Target

I really loved Toys R Us so much!!! 🥰There was in Campbelltown, Casula and Liverpool Westfield a long time ago, and I really missed those stores so much! Bring it back this year, cos I'm still such a Toys R Us kid!!! 😢 BTW, you didn't say anything about Target other than Kmart & Big W!! 1:40

I only remember Toys R Us Parramatta was Huge.
    Then Penrith opened up ⬆️
Youre definitely right Kmart and Big W have always been cheaper than Toys R Us.
But Toys R Us had unique items that weren’t available anywhere else.
This was all before online shopping

I remember me and my siblings begging our grandma to take us to World 4 Kids whenever we visited her in Sydney (we were country kids). I guess it would have been the Penrith store. I didn't think much of Toys R Us when they came along because they were clearly a cheap imitation of the much more superior World 4 Kids. I mean, W4K had Agro's endorsement and I'm sure no money changed hands for that! 😂

I worked in one in Belconnen mall in Cnaberra for one shift before never showing up again, not a bad team, just felt like retail hell and it did not vibe with me, instead I went back to working in an old man bar.
I still have the white vinyl plastic induction folder with the blue logo on it and my name tag

Ironically enough, where erina toys R us used to be is now a toymate, exhibiting the exact same issues of barely anyone visiting and significantly higher prices compared to the kmart and big w across the road. Every time I've been in there I'd be lucky to see more than 2 other customers in there. The only thing going for it is that sometimes it'll have older stock that's no longer being sold elsewhere, but it indicates that they're not having much luck moving stock. This isn't helped by the fact that I've never seen them have any sort of sale. Ever. It's also competing against the Casey's toys down the road too, which thanks to being part toy store, part hobby store, part party supply and part Xmas shop, seems to be faring much better.

I was about 11 or 12 when all this kicked off and I can confirm first hand that World 4 Kidz totally *sucked* compared to Toys R Us. Always good to see Coles take a hit though.
