HI Rabid!, I'm not sure which part you referring to, but, I will tell you that, all those sticking techniques I learned over decades of playing to all those Classic Rock Drummers. Buddy Rich was also a Tremendous influence on my playing, and still is to this day.
barry, raven here, can you add HAND OF DOOM to your sabbath stuff? i want to learn it from the master, well, the master just right below the master? by the always good to see you, have been off awhile,so sorry, but your always my go to guy! always!
Hi Mark! Likewise, good to hear from you again! I've been offline for a while. I had to pack up the drums, due to renovations and entertaining visitors from out-of-town. I hope to be back up and playing again soon. When I do, I will post Hand of Doom for you. All the best! :)
i see many,so called, good drummers that never play the hesitant snare down beat in the third verse break.,they always play right over it and also usually keep their clam shells closed up the entire song,WARD never did that and either have you.
Hi Mark, I try my best to emulate the drummer I’m playing, this way I have a better chance in getting the rudiments, rhythm and timing all together and in the pocket. A good example would be some of the Zep and Deep Purple tunes I do. Very difficult controlling the pocket. Maybe that’s why “Carousalambra”, “Lay Down Stay Down” and “You Fool No One” got a lot of positive reviews. I guess these are hard songs for most to capture or emulate. When it’s done right though, the drumming is amazing to listen to and watch back especially! Believe me it takes many hours, years in fact, of listening and playing to get it right. Something Bonzo and Paice and all the other greats did on point! Imagine that! So, that’s why when I finally get a piece of music down note for note, I really appreciate the sure genius of these drummers even more than just listening to them. And that happens when I too watch it back and am blown away by their genius, not mine! It’s overwhelming to me too sometimes as it’s hard to believe that I can even do stuff like that at all! :) Another great example would be the Frank Zappa and UK tunes I have posted. Emulating Terry Bozzio was sensational! The same when I finally learned after 30 years of trying, Jeff Becks “Air Blower Melody”, with Narada Michael Walden on drums WOW! Give that a listen! One of my all time favorites!

Hi Mark, Again very perceptive! Yes, I must admit it’s true. When I emulate the drummer, without realizing it, become that individual, mentally, physically and spiritually. I guess you have to, to get the job done right. That’s why it took so many years in the trenches as it were. In the pocket is a reference I learned as a studio session drummer while working for a few well-known producers (it was a short stint, for a couple of years, nothing much ever came of it :( , except I made some friends along the way and had some nice experiences. Good for the resume that’s all…) and what that means is staying on point with the beat, driving it but never wavering off timing. Timing is essential for us drummers, if we speed up or slow down it’s a problem! Especially in the studio! So I learned to be calmer when recording. Even when I played live shows, I was notorious for speeding up the tunes. The adrenaline gets to you. This is something you can only learn with experience. I’m much better at controlling and being more conscience of my speed these days. But that was wasn’t always so. J I’m a natural speed demon. I’m most comfortable playing fast. It’s just my nature. Which is why I instantly levitated to Buddy, Carl and Neil P. :)
exactly,i get so pumped as well,i know what you mean.i would equate it to an MMA fighter, somehow you have to get so pumped, but at the same time focus on the task at hand,i can't imagine being in the fight game and the best ones learn to be in a controlled rage and smooth, like you have, thats one thing i realized right off about you as i said,"smooth operator"and "on point" the pocket,as you say.i don't know much, but i know a great drummer when i see one! i do watch alot of covers and see the SPEED DEMONS and the LAzy ONES,ON ludes, lol.i had also recently watched a documentary on the STONES,KIETH RICHARDS said something that really boggled my mind,he said that",he always played at a fast tempo and CHARLIE WATTS played at a slowed down tempo,it was like a top spinning at a slight wobble and at any minute it could all come crashing down at once, can you even imagine playing a show like that? i would be dead by 40! lol!
And thats why Bill Ward is a jazz drummer! The title track from this album has one thing in common with Creams Sunshine of your love... the beat is not on 2 & 4... its on 1 & 3! Heavy & Groovy! You are GREAT!
