I am excited to introduce Project Lightening! This is a collaborative series with Othais and Mae of C&Rsenal in which we test all seven light machine guns and automatic rifles of World War One and put them through a series of tests and evaluations. Each week we will be posting one video on Forgotten Weapons and one on C&Rsenal. Today we have the introduction here, and the 100 yard accuracy testing over on C&Rsenal ( • Project Lightening Epi... ).

Is hat now your daily standard headwear? If so that's awesome
1. Only $6.00 is a STEAL for all eight episodes! I already watched it all, it was both educational and entertaining!
2. You might want to point viewers that are new to one or both channels to C&Rsenal's episodes on specific guns, and Forgotten Weapons excellent episodes on "Machine Gun Terminology".
3. Great job guys! It was great to see you three (and all the others behind the scenes) work together, you really outdid yourself!
So, the rest of the episodes will only be available for purchasing?
This whole thing was a blast to watch, thanks guys!
They're only $6 for the whole thing, that's 5 more hours of shooting goodness.

Ian : People are going to expect it to be unreliable but I think it will run just fine.
Who's the heretic that added a clip of the gun jamming at that exact moment ?
The Chaut get's a bad Rap, the ones in 8mm Lebel were Fine, barring the magazine Issues of course, which was just a function of the time, they were learning as they went. The Horrible reputation came from then they were adopted by the US, and the resultant Kludging them to accept .30-06 that caused the most problems and the unrelability.
Only the French would design a gun for use in mud hole laden battlefields and say:
"I'll cut big, open holes into its magazines and it will work fine!"
@@MrReded69 but DID they design it for mudholes?
Most WW 1 weapons were at best slightly adapted pre war versions when everybody still thought it would end up a high mobility war with little or no trenches. Heck, the doctrine still called for marching and shooting IN LINE.
Cause that was what they had seen the last 30, 40 years, Franco Prussian War, Balkan Wars, Spanish American War... Only slight divergence was the Boer Wars, but that was not two organized militaries against each others but closer to what we now call "asymmetric warfare", Army vs Guerillas. WW 1 was a true outlier, throwing the "industrialised war" wrench into everybody's plans and at the same time preparing its own demise by introducing shocktroop tactics, automatic rifles and armor into warfare, that completely changed the game again for WW 2.
@@Ugly_German_Truths I was under the impression the chauchat was one of the weapon designed around walking fire explicitly to combat trench warfare, but I may be misremembering
It's OK. I didn't need to work these first 27 minutes at my desk anyway.

Regarding the 30-06 Chauchat, while I'm by no means a gunsmith I have messed around with homemade firearms, and man, I've got nothing but respect for any engineer who can design a magazine that is light, reliable, affordable, and easy to manufacture. Seriously, magazines are simultaneously the simplest part of a firearm's design and the hardest to pull off. Hats off to the guys who make them work.

Honestly I don't care about the fedorov, I just wish they could have got a huot. As a canadian that would have made my day
Hout would be nice, but it didn’t get passed trials, the Federov was at least fielded but ended up in a similar situation as the RSC semi autos, they couldn’t build and feed them and their standard issue equipment simultaneously in large numbers

...but... i feel realy uncomfortable watching the three sitting and talking at the bar. Ian is almost falling of the frame on the left, and .. Ian, i get the impression, that you are aware of that awkward situation all the time....
And the bearded person in the middle, in my eyes setting up this unlucky situation, keeps like a mile distance to Mae - for no obvious reason - will putting this uneasy pressure on the nice person to his left (from the viewers perspective).
@@mr.baumguard what the hell are you talking about? Also Mae and Othais work really well together and are probably together.
@@mr.baumguard
Notice in part 2 . Ian sits in the middle.
We will see if that continues.
It is a small production problem but does not reduce my enjoyment. The three person format is hard to deliver. Who does sit in the middle, when all three are competent to lead the discussion? It has been a revelation to me that there are people who are articulate about guns; also they present circumstances surrounding a gun, such as inventories, procurement, tooling and tooling development and ammunition issues that was, to me, an unknown historical tapestry of 20th C. warfare. I like Ian's near childish excitement at a particularly elegant piece of engineering. Obviously I am a fan, perhaps less money spent on production means more money for guns.
I can only say good things about Brownells. I normally hate corporate sponsors, but once in awhile, you find a decent company that still cares about the customers and Brownie is one of those for now.

Officially, the best Valentine's day I have ever witnessed!
This is way more informative, interesting, and better produced than anything on the Military or History channel these days.

That intro was terrific. You all do great work. I'm looking forward to supporting both your channels on patreon and feel bad for not doing it sooner.
I don't know if or how I can comment on the forgotten firearms homepage, but I would like to thank Ian personally somehow.
I found his channel from a scientific curiosity/ gaming intetest and discovered countless types of firearms. Every gun has it's own nuance and story behind it's development. Even if it doesn't exactly work every time you pull the trigger there is still something to appreciate in the firearm itself. Whether it be exquisite manufacturing or just making do with what you have. There are so many ways to make something go BOOM and our mustachiode hero will show us every possible way to propel a piece of metal down range.
