I am not a Marine. However, a lot of my friends from my youth were Marines and the Marines tried to recruit me in high school. I knew a recon Marine in 1985 and was impressed by him as an individual Marine. He explained a lot of stuff to me about the Marines and the general special operations community in the eighties. I also met a couple FORCE RECON Marines in 1988 when I was a beach lifeguard at Myrtle Beach...they were big guys who looked like they could beat the crap out of anybody. I mean anybody...civilian outlaw bikers, other Marines, they looked like they could have handled Mike Tyson if they had to. That being said, I always found the Marine Corps recon community a bit weird in the sense that they always seemed like second string to JSOC units. I always got the impression the Marine Corps leadership was very jealous of loaning out their best guys and best units to joint units like SOCOM. I also have had the impression that the Marine Corps in general never truly got focused on true special operations in the sense like JSOC or the British SAS. I dont think the Marine Corps will ever get away from their core mission...medium to large scale amphibious operations that are offensive in nature (seizing beaches held by enemy forces). Amphibious ops are the Marines creme da la creme. To me, Marine recon is like a support unit to the infantry and to the Marine high command...feeding them intel and doing special ops just for the Marine Corps high command...hence the name "FORCE" Recon. Meaning they are recon units for the Marine Amphibious Force Generals in the Fleet Marine Force. In plain English, my impression of Marine recon is, "you find'em and the Marine infantry or Marine aviation units will come kill them." Maybe things have changed with MARSOC..I dont know much about MARSOC.
Not too far off the only thing is Marine Recon isnt apart of JSOC they are Special Missions Capable so them seeming like second string units to JSOC is because they arent under JSOC command. MARSOCs mission is much more of what you would consider "Special Operations Oriented". In my opinion Marine Recon should be under JSOC just as Green Berets/ 75th are Recon/Raiders should be aswell. It would also help a ton with funding for Recon and a lot of much needed upgrades perfect example is the Army going to the XM5 replacing the M4A1and Recon is still stuck with the m4 but are considered " special missions capable" yet they are behind Army Leg units gear and funding wise/

In plain English, my impression of Marine recon is, "you find'em and the Marine infantry or Marine aviation units will come kill them."
Maybe things have changed with MARSOC..I dont know much about MARSOC.

So do both Force Recon and Division Recon learn parachuting?
All Force Recon Marines are jump and five qualified. Division Recon you'll see some with either or and some with both.
