How did I not see these parallels before lol. I love seeing these kinda of things in anime. I think the anime naruto has some of these too I’ve noticed over the years
I always interpreted the dragon balls as a metaphor for how there isn’t a straight shot to happiness through achieving one particular dream or goal. Bulma wanted a boyfriend and Yamcha wanted to get rid of his shyness around girls but they ultimately got that without the help of a magic wish from Shenron. Goku also insists on helping people and ends up getting them closer to gathering the dragon balls by doing so than if they were to pursue them directly with no heroic detours in mind. That being said, your interpretation better represents a solution to problem people sometimes face of not having any goals to pursue beyond what their base instincts bring about for them. Constant pleasure seeking prevents us from being motivated because a lower part of us is already satisfied. The Journey to the West interpretation of early DB seems to be more focused on the opposite problem of not being content in spite of getting what you wanted.
