Love this new format Mick! I know you don’t really want to be a traditional pedal demo channel but not many others have the audio/vid skills, the insightful feedback, and the classic expensive gear to compare the recreations to and provide context!
Thank you! Yeah, that’s part of the point of this. Almost nobody is micing amps any more. We understand why, but it’s a different game when it’s an actual loud amp. Cheers!
These quick comparisons using the consistent Deluxe reverb platform make a lot of sense. I'd actually love to hear the Orion up against the Dunlop echoplex.
Hey Mick. Boy... the real tape echo sounds so effin good. The modulation and warmth are the real deal. To be honest, for digital I still love the delays I get from my Timeline. I've actually received from crap from one or two people online for using the "Stry-fecta" (TimeLine, Mobius and BigSky) but they work for me. Thanks for these new Effector Du Jour demos! Love to the TPS family!
No one in their right mind is going to use a *real* tape echo anywhere but in the studio, especially with how good the emulations are, these days. It’s still interesting to hear the comparisons, though. Thanks. ♥TPS
I guess it depends on what you're going for - lots of surf type bands drag around their big Fender external spring reverb units, and the TTE is smaller than those. I agree that live the difference might not be worth the hassle, but it all depends on what you're doing and want to commit to carrying.
the fulltone box is sick. glad fulltone is back. re: UAFX- I just bought a bundle of three UA plug-ins for my Luna daw one of them was their EP tape echo unit-It is so awesome-their stuff sounds amazing in ARM mode through the Apollo twin X-zero latency.
I have the TTE. It just blows every other delay out of the water. I did an A-B test of it next to a Strymon El Capistan and a Deco. As good as those Strymon pedals are, they sound pale next tot he TTE.
Mick, these short forms are fun. You get to the essence of things quickly. You needed a lie down after? I needed to stand up and tap some tempo. Hope all is well. -G
I made a copy of the Magnetic Keeley and I am in love, not expensive is also great, but the Fulltone is one biggest passions, I won't rest until I get one in hands and feet!!❤
I like my Orion. Sounds great and so much tweaking can be done. Especially the option of turning on/off the pre-amp is cool and sounds really great. Thanks again for a great video!
You kinda say its not apples vs apples but to use that analogy, the UAD is like a 'granny smith' (slightly sharp with some edge) and the fulltone like a 'pink lady' (smoother, juicier and sweeter). Also, is it the case that the fulltone preamp is, err, juicing up the signal more and thus rounding off the repeats in a much more pleasant way?
Nothing beats the real tape, but I’m really satisfied with my Orion - it is punchy, dynamic, cuts really well, it has nice low-cut to repeats so it doesn’t muddy up tone going into the amp, and I got it dirt cheap. Win
TTE by a country Mile. It just creates this: bed or an ethereal-pad that just washes over ( yet remains in the background ). Nothing like a Real Tape Echo.
Merci Mick. On aime bien quand tu glisses quelques petits mots de français dans tes chouettes vidéos. Eh oui ! Il y a aussi des froggies qui regardent That Pedal Show de l'autre côté de la Manche !
All sounds lovely, but the 345 into the Fulltone TTE into the Deluxe, cranked a little, is SOMETHING ELSE!!! I’m enjoying these Effector Du Jours. I’ll take some more if I may….
Im still oldschool purist here or what. The Tube Tape echo still has like extra dimension (or two) over the Orion. Saying all that, Orion is still awesome sounding delay pedal.
I guess it’s like comparing a high end flavored vodka, and muddling fresh berries into vodka? In the face of each other, the difference is obvious. In the context of a cocktail, maybe not as important?
So always take the compromise and just get drunk? It's a strategy for sure. I'll take the time to crush the berries, avoid the additives and extra chemicals and enjoy the flavour to the full.
Sounds great, Mick. The tube tape echo sounds like it has a bit more body to it - maybe it's the preamp? - that sounds more pleasant to me. Both sound fine and I don't know that I could tell the difference in any setting if you weren't A/Bing them. SIde note, have you retired the Belle Epoch Deluxe? Mine is still a fav, although I wish it included tap tempo onboard. Stick with it, kid!
Honestly, the Tech 21 Boost DLA can do this for much cheaper. I know they're not a sexy company and it seems many gearheads assume the most expensive things are always the best, but whatever. I git mine used for $120 10 years ago and it's still my favorite. You can make it as bright or dark as you want and you can add flutter if you want.
Hi Mick, great video. Do you happen to know if the Orion (particularly in pre-amp mode) supports analog dry-through? Looking for a replacement for my Belle epoch and this could be it.
Awesome. Has the Orion overtaken the Belle Epoch Deluxe for you? I remember you being slightly out off when you guys first tried the Starlight, because it was too bright, if I’m remembering correctly.
I love the sound of the BED, but no onboard tap tempo and the polarity flip keep it off my main board. My main current delays are either the Source Audio Collider (has reverb too), Caroline Megabyte or the Free The Tone Future Factory…. For my own personal board anyway. Tap tempo a must. Cheers!
I had various tape and drum echos in the 1960s and 70s yes they are better than pedals but they do have far more reliabilty issues and need servicing in todays world id go for pedals unless i had a spare tape unit spare
God that TTE sounds amazing. If it were plausible to take a tape echo unit on tour without spending crazy amounts of money, i’d replace all my delays with tape echo units. But live, as other peole have said, pedals sound more than good enough to do the job, and that Orion does sound really good.
@@ThatPedalShow I mean the Orion is a simplified version of the starlight..one of the most sought after aspects of the echoplex is its preamp. You guys played the pedal down because it didn’t have that feature yet. When UAFX updated it with the preamp, someone asked you if you’d be willing to have another look at it, to which you declined.
I’m excited to see these simple UA pedals get played, as they’ve got some different features than the big pedals seemingly, like the Evermore with its multiple variations of 224 settings versus the Golden just having the Hall.
Oh I see. It won't help matters, but for personal use I'd turn the preamp off anyway and use something analogue like an EP Boost or similar, maybe hence not being super interested in revisiting the Starlight. It's on here because it's in the pedal and the Fulltone has a preamp too. Perhaps I should have turned it on and off for the contrast.
Orion sounds really nice...but man...the TTE is something else.
agreed
Agreed.

Well said
Love these Du Jour episodes! Thanks! Sounds pretty good. I think I would need to hear it in person for a final judgement.
Always the case. Always! Hopefully these help with deciding what’s worth the in-person time.

@ThatPedalShow i understand going digital but I won't be doing it anytime soon. Haven't seen your vids in a while, man! Remember Paradiso?
These quick comparisons using the consistent Deluxe reverb platform make a lot of sense. I'd actually love to hear the Orion up against the Dunlop echoplex.
That would be a great comparison!
Maybe it's not as spooky and vibey as a real-deal EP-3, but damn, that Fulltone sounds good.
Really hope that Effector Du Jour will be a regular fixture - wry much like it!
Hey Tim, hope you’re well mate. Yes. Hope to do at least one per week.

I know a guy who still tours with an Echoplex. He has like 5 tho... ha. He is not in his right mind...
Except John Squire 😊

Tape wins, not only sounds more present but also stays out of the way better
Ive decided tape echo is my favourite type of delay id love s tape unit
I was rootin for the ORION but the TTE is psycho, I love it. Big difference
the fulltone box is sick. glad fulltone is back.
re: UAFX- I just bought a bundle of three UA plug-ins for my Luna daw one of them was their EP tape echo unit-It is so awesome-their stuff sounds amazing in ARM mode through the Apollo twin X-zero latency.
Oh man a delay episode, and a TAPE delay wooohooo! Happy days! Sounds glorious!
Cool sounds. Great biceps. Looking and sounding good Mick. This should inspire all guitar players to hit those curls over the years to keep it fit.
Ha! It’s been a couple of decades since I’ve done a bicep curl! Running, push ups, rowing. :0)
I have the TTE. It just blows every other delay out of the water. I did an A-B test of it next to a Strymon El Capistan and a Deco. As good as those Strymon pedals are, they sound pale next tot he TTE.
Analogue. Always. :0)
The tape is dynamically superior.
Oh, come on. How so?
Even over smart phone speakers you can hear the tonal difference. The orion is good but the fulltone is the star here. Excellent comparison.
The TTE's preamp is very organic and magical. There's a reason why even the great Tom Petty used em live.
I love this format keep it going

The Fulltone is glorious, as expected. The digital one sounds pretty good though, and isn't crazy expensive.
The Fulltone sounds amazing
One of the best tones ever on TPS, and not a pedal in sight! Vintage ES345, TTE and cranked Deluxe Reverb my kind of rig!
Ha! Cheers Ed! Gotta say, the 335 and the Deluxe Reverb is feeling like home already!
I like my Orion. Sounds great and so much tweaking can be done. Especially the option of turning on/off the pre-amp is cool and sounds really great.
Thanks again for a great video!
That TTE sounds fantastic!
You did not have to do this. The TTE is marvellous. Meaning now I need it…
More TTE and 345, that was something !
Lovely sounds👌
Both sound great. Well played.
Thanks Mick really Floyd esque today ....nice. Like the Orion .
TTE and it’s not even close. Cheers
Yep.
Sounding great!
Could you do something similar for the UA Galaxy 74 and the EchoFix? (Or the Space Echo if Dan’s is around!)
Fulltone for studio recording but the Orion for gigs because it's smaller and less likely to break during load ins and outs.
Nothing beats the real tape, but I’m really satisfied with my Orion - it is punchy, dynamic, cuts really well, it has nice low-cut to repeats so it doesn’t muddy up tone going into the amp, and I got it dirt cheap. Win
Yeah that TTE is out of this world!
"Mick of the Day." Hard to argue with that.
The Fulltone all day...
TTE by a country Mile. It just creates this: bed or an ethereal-pad that just washes over ( yet remains in the background ). Nothing like a Real Tape Echo.
That 345 looks and sounds sweet Mick
This video just makes me want a TTE
"I need a lie down." Very rock'n'roll!
Mick could have played seated like many blues greats.
The Fulltone is so musical sounding. What was the solid state box again?
Immediately the guitar itself sounds great.
Orion sounds really good. Fulltone obviously better but it should given the cost/size differential.
I mean, I know it's not a cassette tape, but I'd love to see a "tape left in the car on a hot day" mode
Merci Mick. On aime bien quand tu glisses quelques petits mots de français dans tes chouettes vidéos. Eh oui ! Il y a aussi des froggies qui regardent That Pedal Show de l'autre côté de la Manche !

When you listen to it back you will hear what we all heard, digital emulations of analogue fall short.

Cheers Matthew! More coming soon. Dan's done some too!
Rock'n'Roll was never hum-less!
You can totally tell the difference both sound good though
Sound's Great !
Fulltone hands down, in my opinion
Great tape echo!!
The real question though is what gave you done to tame the highs on your strat bridge pickup? Your tone sounds so well-balanced.
Nothing at all. The tone control isn’t even connected if it’s the sunburst Strat. It’s just loud and old!
I freaking love that guitar man
I love this guitar man too.
Im still oldschool purist here or what. The Tube Tape echo still has like extra dimension (or two) over the Orion.

8 feet 11.2 inches. Wadlow has nothing on me.
For pedal, file under ‘Delay’ and amp, ‘Leo got it right 60 years ago’.
I want to hear the Tube Fulltone against the T-Rex Replicator Junior
afforable tape echo

Awesome timeing of this vid
Tube tape echo has more meat on the bone.
I'll second that.

Which one do you like better Mick, orion or belle epoche deluxe? Great video.
That 345 gives me a right cob-on.
Me too!
Cool !!
Have you tried the Horizon Devices Flux Echo?
Orion sounds thin and bright.
So Orion or new Strymon BRIG bucket delay? 🤔
I haven’t played the Brig,, but it emulates analog BBD delays, not a tape delay. The Strymon equivalent would be the El Capistan. Cheers!
even on laptop speaker the TTE owns the other thing
Off topic question - what's that amp head with the yellow faceplate next to the Matchless?
An old Carlsbro 100. Belongs to Jack Griffiths, sounds like being hit in the face with a concrete block.
Thats the amps Bill Nelson of bebop delux used cool stuff cheers @ThatPedalShow
Personally, I prefer a “Pick’n’Mix,” somewhat longer format. Jus saying.
Orion is cool and what not but Maaaann the Real tape. Warmth dimensionsional wall of sound is what comes to mind.

UAFX Orion or boss re 202 ?
If you want multi-head, the latter. If you want a simple single head, the former.

This is what it’s supposed to be like real pedals into a real amp. Not pedals into modeling.

Why bother going over the Orion when you didn’t bother to test the Starlight with the preamp?
